I produced this song for Warners in 2005 - signed to Warners by Craig Aaronson (RIP). Daryl wrote this song on the way to the studio - it wasn't something we even knew about until he sang it over the phone (NOT AN IPHONE YET!!) to me. I immediately told Craig we were recording it. He thought I was crazy. But it was so obvious! The organ in the intro is a vintage Vox Continental and is throughout the song - a bit of retro there on which is now a retro song! The drummer sang the amazing harmonies in the chorus that are great secondary hooks. It was done really fast - at Bay 7 Studios in Valley Village

There seems to almost be two albums going on - the electronic side with guitars added and the more britpop/full band tracks, but it all works really well together - were you present for the whole thing? Aren’t the best songs generally written super quick and just flow out?! Great work man!
@@Martyncrockermusic I remixed and added production on some of the Dan songs. Some we just left. I did Dance Party and The Razor besides BHB. The band wanted to experiment with more rock stuff so they brought me in.

Daryl Palumbo is a musical genius. The fact that he made such amazing post-hardcore with Glassjaw and then turned around and made this electronic rock masterpiece speaks to his incredible talent.

How this song didn't become a huge hit is beyond me. It has all the right ingredients. It found the right balance between retro and modern and was difficult to categorise; and not, it wasn't 'emo' either.

This song holds a very special place in my heart. My best friend made a video to help me secure a date for my high school senior year prom in 2005. He chose this song to play in the background. I remember seeing them in 2006 right after this came out at a dive bar called Club Tundra in Syracuse New York. Hung out with the band after and they couldn't even believe what a dive the place was.

Why Head Automatica never became either a) and over night sensation or b) a multi-platinum selling band that would have made it's repsective members overnight millionaires: *1: Too soon, because right after Head Automatica called it a day, Fits & The Tantrums hit it big time. Same sound, same style, same aesthetic, and what was "too early" a time for Head Automatica, was "just right" for Fitz & The Tantrums.* *2: Wrong "scene" to market it too, and the A&R at Warner Bros. realized this when it was too late. This band, and sound, were meant for a whole different crowd of listeners. Not the "alternative" crowd of MTV and Fuse.*
The same thing happened to glass jaw had their first album and second album came out 2 years after they did glass jaw would have been big but I kind of like how glass jaw is still ours

I just woke up from a dream where it was me and my pet bird but we met for the first time. I was in some familiar places and getting ready for graduation. At the end I found a few of my classmates and we all sang this song. I graduated in 2008 lol
