Let’s talk about the cost of textbooks in colleges. $350 for a updated biology laboratory book and manual that are REQUIRED that they only changed 2 words in 👀😡🤬

When I went to college in the late 70's & early 80's minimum wage was in the $2.30 to $3 range my text books were $15 to $45. If minimum wage hasn't risen much relative to that why should students pay $300 to $600 for a book that is frequently underutilized and can't be sold, because the professor will order an new addition. Textbook companies are similar to pharmacist on pricing.
@MrOu83

@@sdgidney4139 - Yes, the federal minimum wage increased from $2.30 to $3.35 per hour on January 1, 1981, and has increased fairly slowly since then ($7.25). Fortunately, some states + D.C. have their own minimum wage. Where I live (D.C.) it is $15.00 an hour. Textbook prices are ridiculously high. I wouldn’t buy one today. Maybe people should group together, purchase one textbook, rip off the binder, find a free copier on campus and photocopy it and distribute for a small fee. Copyright violation be damned.

They make it difficult to buy used textbooks as they change textbooks sometimes each semester and require students to buy these texts and teachers often don’t even use the texts. No one should accept students loans they can’t pay off in 5 years after graduating. Even it takes longer to get that degree by working and attending part time and taking online classes that makes more sense unless you just want the full time college experience and are willing to pay for that experience well into middle age. Parents need to prepare their kids for realistic consequences of borrowing massive amounts for college. Many never graduate but debt still has to be paid. College is not for everyone. There are excellent technical colleges which suit many more than a liberal arts degree.

In a way it's a scam, it doesn't garuantee you a great life at all, just debt, BUT we've found other ways to make college beneficial, and they work, it's that simple, college is useful for many things. *The primary reason college helps people, let's just say girls who want a fairy tale life that haven't gotten it by highschool graduation, is that girls find guys there as it's a close proximity, no parent zone, that allows them no matter how cowardly they are, and when it comes to meeting guys, females are cowards, yet they look at guys who struggle in a negative way, smfh... Anyway I've met many girls who HOPE THAT GUY IN THEIR CLASS WILL TALK TO THEM, and that's their plan, either this guy that just so happens to be in my class talks to me, or I'll struggle after to be randomly approached and be sad and depressed, because I turned down every guy that approached me, except for that guy.* I see college as a positive now, I used to think, and kinda do thinks it's the biggest scam, for the avg guy that doesn't know how to use campuses. Also, in regards nto meeting people, it's the last safe place to meet the opposite sex before entering the real world. You either luck up in highschool or college, because at that age it's all circumstancial, as you do not have a grasp on dating at all.

Why do student loans have any interest? This is supposed to be educating the future. Getting adults into professional jobs in society. The lenders (esp. if govt) shouldn't be profiting off young people trying to better themselves. If any it should be max 1% interest. When do you think people should learn the importance of paying back the money they borrowed, and pledged to pay back? Financial aid tends to benefit poor students... like I was. Debt forgiveness will benefit more affluent kids, whose parents made too much for them to get financial aid. The Dems just keep promising more and more free sh*t, and people will mass mail-in their ballots to elect them. There are no guarantees in life. It's not the government or the taxpayers that are responsible for guaranteeing anyone's success. For that you need to put in the work... sorry.

I’m sure you are everything but sorry. And you guessed wrong. I have an almost perfect credit score (though perfect payment history) but I do not use my personal experience to judge everyone else’s. I’m not sure how old you are but any adult should know that we all have different realities, even within the same social-economic status. I was broke myself, and so was my family (most of them still are) when I first applied. But me coming back and saying that I’m better, bc I put the effort, would be the most selfish and degrading thing I would do. We only live so long and I will not spend it defending the ones that contribute to make college and other basics expensive in the first place. Now, debt forgiveness not only is humane but necessary in an economy like ours, or else, how do you explain bankruptcy? -yes, I understand how bankruptcy works, just try to understand the simile from my pov. And, to be honest with you, even though I would expect and will police for lawmakers to benefit only the non-rich, I would still be on the side of getting it approved regardless, just so my disadvantaged people can increase their chance to go get higher education. Because the rich will go to college regardless they pay or not. But with the protection from people like you -that love to be the soil under their shoe sole- they will only be more benefited as far as competitiveness. It has to change, yes or yes. It really catches my eye when you say that the Dems are promising “more free sh*t”, to what I invite you to ask yourself if you know how many tax breaks the rich get (and other free sh*t). And, most importantly, because of the rashness of the phrase, are you sure that what really bothers you is You not being able to prove to your masters that you earned it to be like them? Review your priorities and your critical skills, which should be the best acquired at college. Going to college is also a privilege in the sense of getting access to knowledge only a few can handle (for whatever valid reasons), but it’s mostly a privilege because it should be paid back to society for its growth. You trying to block that growth only isolate your from a society that some way or another -including the ability to get a loan- granted you the opportunity you are so proud of. It’s not about being partisan, this it is a matter of fellowship with college students that will have their chance to work in a different level for this country. Be on the right side of history.

Here are some suggestions: Make community colleges free for most Americans. Get rid of the roll grant and state financial aid. Lower the cost of state college, increase the number of state schools and their capacities, make it essentially free for low to middle income families. Increase funding for public trade schools and make it a more appealing and affordable choice choice. We need more trades people anyway. In addition, provide better meals to k-12 schools, put more better tasting and nutritious food in front of them. if you want can also expand it to college students.

But no one talks about that. Also let’s talk about taking basically kids and putting loan documents in front of them when they have no idea what they are signing. A college degree doesn't equate with the ability to find a job that provides a living wage. We have to stop telling our kids the lie that the only way to have a "successful career" is to go to college. People don't stay in the same job with the same organization for 50 years and then retire. I doubt that most people are planning on doing piece work on a factory floor or an assembly line. Times change; our education systems should be leading, not playing catch up or educating students the same way they've "always done it." Companies can't find qualified workers so they do their own training; certainly not the best way to educate a generation but the education systems' failures don't give them many alternatives.

It's called greed in this country Truth be told there are some students that are borrowing more than what's needed during their time in school I was one of them so it is now my responsibility to repay what I've borrowed

I applaud Mr. Mark Brown for his work heading the U.S. Student Loan department. The weight of the debt our economy keeps building is out of control and it is not young collegiates fault. Wealthy Americans who accept Gifted$$$ should give it back And Apologize for their Greed.

Grant's only cover 1/4 of tuition cost now days. Requiring students to obtain loans just to cover the cost. Todays tuition expense is ridiculous.

I'm convinced that state schools and community schools are the way to go. The pickle I am in now is due to my naivety. My ex's new wife at the time, and my ex, played up a particular university out of state, to my child, which was a nice school of course, but at 40K a year. My child could have gone to another nice school, in-state, but would have only cost me approx 4K a year. My ex and I intended to split the tuition, on the upscale university, which we did. I would do anything in the world for my son. If he was convinced that this was the school that he needed to go to, then so be it, in my eyes, although we went on many a tour, and he would have been able to attend all, but one other college. I have clawed my way through much to care for him in any way that I possibly can. Unfortunately, me, not knowing the price of tea in China, and thinking all would be well. Here we are, 12 years down the road, and the payments keep going up and up. It's scary. I'm getting older, and worry about that loan more and more. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but my ex's wife knew EXACTLY why she was pushing for the higher-priced school. I will not go into details, but she was determined to control the course of the future, unbeknownst to me. Her brother-in-law, married to her sister, a second marriage, did the same thing to his ex. He is a lawyer. I don't begrudge the education or the experience that my son was able to enjoy, and friendships made, due to attending this particular university, but 12 years down the road, and no relief in sight, has me stuck in places I don't want to be. I have no clue how this will work out. I'm going to apply for IDR, but, aside from lowering the payments; how can this change-of-status payment actually re-size the loan in my favor. Trying not to cry here. What to do???? Any sound advice?? Thanks.

M&L class ppl r making the same or less wages as those in the late ‘70’s but college educations have risen significantly. How can ppl making 1970’s wages repay their student loans on today’s wages? Many can’t, many default an ruin their credit bc they weren’t born into a wealthy family. This is wrong. A student who has to take out student loans is paying more for the same degree as a student who’s family can pay for their schooling, everything else kept equal. I’m other words, less affluent kids have to pay more for the same degree but they don’t make more once they start their career. Baby Boomers had debt-free college bc it was 80-100% publicly funded. Every generation thereafter has paid 80% w/20% publicly funded so that we could do Republican tax cuts/stimulus so the wealthy could get richer. The deck is stacked against students from less affluent families from day 1 which is wrong and hurts the country as a whole. We need to return to debt-free college/technical school like every other wealthy country, the wealthy and corporations need to pay their fair share of taxes, forgive student debt, and wipe out negative student loan credit reporting.
