With Tesla now allowing Ford and Rivian customers to use its Supercharger network in North America - and more models due in the coming months - there's a lot of interest in available CCS Type 1 to NACS adapters.
And, having just got our hands on Ford's official NACS adapter (as designed and manufactured with Tesla), we decided to pit it against the A2Z Typhoon adapter!
Here are our thoughts, and why we think either would be a great pick in your charging arsenal.

As a note, UL guideline's order of operation recommends that if you are using an adapter after stopping the charging session, you'll disconnect first the supply cable connector from the adapter while the adapter is still connected to the car's charging port and then disconnect the adapter from your vehicle's charging port. I believe Tom Moloughney from the "State of Charge" RU-vid Channel mentions this in one of his videos also.

@JohnRoss1 21 день назад
Basically the adapter only swaps the positive and negative DC pins and (perhaps) network pins to match the supercharger handle. The rest of the "magic" is dependant on Tesla reprograming the (V3) supercharger for the OEM .

That's helpful to know. I've wondered what would happen if I tried one of these on my Kia Niro. Seems obvious now that it just wouldn't work.

Thank you! I received my A2Z connector a couple of days ago and had trouble getting it to work while testing it. Your video showed me where I was going wrong. BTW was that you in your Lghtning towing that trailer, like in the lead up shot on this video charging in Chehalis/Centralia WA near the Walmart the other day? If so, I am kicking myself for not turning around a going back to check and say "hi"

Re cost: EA is currently $.56/kwh, which is more than what you stated at the SC station price you quoted. EVCS at the coast is .49/kwh recently

It changes based on county. Within a 35 minute drive I have Chargepoints that charge anywhere from $.13 to $.39 per kWh and EA's that charge $.48 to $.58 per kWh.

Any news about the Tesla charging group staff? Are a lot of the former Tesla people working for competing charge providers? Which companies? Is anyone working on charging at Tesla? As a Bolt driver, I wonder if anyone at Tesla is collaborating with GM on adapters and supercharger access or if they were all laid off.

I like the Typhoon adapter. The reviews seem to indicate that it is a solid, robust unit, like my A2Z Stellar J1772 adapters. I just hope A2Z will also release its Supercharger extension cable in the near future to solve the problem with short cables and different charging port locations. Tesla's website states: "Coming Spring 2024: General Motors, Volvo, Polestar." Ummm… so… over the next 6 days those automakers' EVs will also be authorized to use NACS adapters, right? RIGHT…?
@matthewbaynham6286
@matthewbaynham6286 21 день назад
The problem is the reason why CCS is unreliable is going to move over the NACS. CCS is unreliable because no one company is developing everything, the cars are all developed by different manufacturers, the charging stations are all developed by different manufacturers, and the payment has so many variations as well. When NACS was just Tesla it didn't have this problem, but it will have this exact same problem. Anyway I prefer what the EU did in just forcing one charging standard on everyone, it's just much simpler for everyone (except for the second hand Nissan LEAF market).

If large vehicles take up more than one space at charging stations shouldn't there be an etiquette for those drivers to pick the farthest charger on the right or left so they don't intrude on other drivers ability to hook up to a charger? Which side would depend on the location of the charging port on the vehicle. I'm seen drivers block other drivers ability to reach a charger because of the size of their vehicle or when they are towing a trailer of some sort. In those cases etiquette should dictate they unhook their trailer in order to charge. Sometimes those drivers will stop their charging to let others charge, then go back to charging when it's less busy. Those are the good drivers.

Is there a video explaining why charging stations don't have overhangs like gas pumps do? Seems like a charging station would have even more need to be out of the weather than a pump. And despite the cost, I'm leaning towards the Ford-Tesla adapter over the A2Z. But hey, I think having options will bring the price down.

Question: Are the top locking levers on both models metal/plastic? Same with the little tabs that come up to lock the charger in place and the bottom switch cover. I ask because if these are plastic I believe they may not last as long as ones made of metal (quality of metal and beefiness of parts counts too, I guess)
@randycarter2001
@randycarter2001 21 день назад
The problem with the SAE J1772 standard. The SAE didn't restrict the location of the charge port. So automakers put it wherever they felt was good. Now you have to park in wonky positions in order to plug in at a supercharger and may even have to use an extension cord.
@PaulBarwick
@PaulBarwick 21 день назад
have you found a source for a DCFC extension cord? I would consider buying a short one if I knew where to get one.

@randycarter2001 21 день назад
@@PaulBarwick I've seen a NACS extension cord but I don't think it's capable of DCFC.
@oldgeeksguide
@oldgeeksguide 21 день назад
I don't see that as a problem. For one thing, if they did an overly restrictive rule like that, they'd probably pick the wrong place for it (like not putting it on the curb side of the car), plus it would be very restrictive for design. If car makers want to particularly be compatible with tesla chargers, they could put it on the passenger side front of the car, or just on front or back of the car, but I don't think there is a clear best place to put it nor is that something a plug standard should be dictating.

Well done video. I kept looking out my window to find the rooster until you mentioned yours. Does ford precondition automatically and use its route planner to find chargers on the way to your destination - now including superchargers? The Tesla road trip experience is made worry free due to the supercharger network and the intelligent built in routing which knows where they are, knows what’s available, and automatically preps the car by preheating the battery to take a fast charge. Software integration is more than half the experience - how is ford doing on that experience?

Is there any enthusiasm for testing a Chademo adaptor? Chademo to CCS or Chademo to NACS. Am I the only one interested ?
@transportevolved
@transportevolved 21 день назад
We have plans to test a CCS to CHAdeMO adaptor, but because you require a manufacturer agreement to use the Tesla network at the moment CHAdeMO to NACS isn't going to work on the US network at least. ^Kate

Lone standard. In the USA that is now NACS. I’d expect to see the other adapters die out over the next 5 years first becoming uncommon then rare.

Why would there be a difference in cost of the same charge session if using an adapter?
@angusbartlett9270
@angusbartlett9270 18 дней назад
Charging curves have higher charging speeds at lower battery capacity, they got more kw added at the start of the session then at the end.

Do you think they will work on, for example, an evgo in case a ccs is not working or is broken. you could instead use the tesla one that evgo has? I've been to many charging stations that have all 3 connectors and the ccs is usually down while the other 2 are in working conditions. This would help a bunch if it works for other chargers that aren't tesla. Thank you 😊 keep evolving!
@onekopaka
@onekopaka 21 день назад
Right now those Tesla ones at EVgo as far as I've seen are an integrated CHAdeMO to Tesla adapter so these adapters won't work there, but when other networks like EVgo have J3400 these adapters would work.

It remains super problematic how Tesla is slow walking access to their network regardless. There is zero technical reason not to open it up to many CCS models already produced, yet they are continuing to exploit exclusive agreements with OEMs for new vehicles vs. simply firing up their app to work for anybody that wants to use it. And frankly, owning a perfectly good EV that will last for decades, getting left in the dust on this absolutely pisses me off and amplifies the hate I have for Tesla and Musk specifically. It's Apple grade connector bullshit for cars.
