A basic demonstration of how I apply a ceramic coating on headlights using commonly available tools and products.
The coating used in this video is MR-FIX9H and was purchased through Wish.
Instructions for this product were sent through a computerised translation so this was my interpretation.
Update Fri Jun 21, 2019: after approximately a year headlights lost some clarity. Noting that this was not designed for plastic headlights, I would say that a full year of protection for $10 or less is well worth it. Also note that after the ceramic has failed, the headlight could then be polished again and recoated. This may be the final update for this video.
Update May 4th: note that there is a premium version of Mr fix 9h available now.
After area is in near-perfect condition (Polished, no scratches and then IPA panel wiped).
Step 1: Wrap supplied towel around applicator sponge.
Step 2: Wet said towel and sponge. (Wet, Not dripping)
Step 3: Apply in a cross hatch pattern. (Prefer to finish in direction of wind)
Step 4: Wait 10 - 20 minutes to dry. Wet a clean towel, gently wipe the lens, and immediately, and gently, buff dry. (You will be able to see there is no more water)
Wait 2 hours before exposing the vehicle to the outdoors.
Wait 2 weeks before washing with soap.
DO NOT TOUCH FOR A MINIMUM OF 2 DAYS.
This last point is why a lot of shops require the vehicle for 2 days, as you can't always prevent someone from leaving a fingerprint on your car. Like at a store parking lot.
After 2 weeks, the coating will have reached its maximum hardness.
If you are looking to do this yourself, MR-FIX9H used in this video can be purchased from Wish or Geek and a number of other places. I believe I paid approximately $10 CAD for the solution kit. Note: The way the headlight looks prior to application is the way it will look after, meaning this coating doesn't fill scratches so it's important to remove as many/all imperfections prior to coating. Good luck and happy detailing.
This service will soon be listed on our website: evolutionad.ca...

after polishing you should remove wax residue with alcohol solution or degreaser
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
Yes, as noted in the description prior to step 1. Utilising an IPA panel wipe. This ensures adhesion to the surface, rather than adhering to wax or polish residue.

Any updates? Nice to see you replied to many of the questions in this comment section. I tried various methods to protect my headlights but none lasted more than a few months. Tried regular paint sealant wax and that does help protect the plastic lens from UV damage but the wax itself goes yellow after a few weeks so needs to be re-waxed every 2 or 3 months. Right now I'm trying a product that's inexpensive but claims to be ceramic coat for headlights. Instructions say let it cure and harden with no water contact for 72 hours and no soap wash for 2 weeks which is a pain but at least the product sounds serious. I may do second coat after a couple more weeks and who knows maybe can get it to last longer than just a few months.

Yeah. The yellowing occurs because the uv light from the sun penetrates most clear coatings. So, imo the best coating is for a headlight would require a high level of uv protection. Factory headlight coatings usually fit the bill, often lasting many years before failure. I've also considered polishing and clear wrapping the headlight with uv protected film. I've not tested that though. For updates... The coating was tested a few times and I found some inconsistencies in the results. Humidity plays a huge factor. Testing averaged about 6 months of durability without a recoat before failing.

New lights fitted!!! No need to polish? Then Glass cleaner and dry, Apply Clearcoat with added UV protection, job done!!!🤔🇬🇧👍

Also that nice microfiber towel, used to wipe off the ceramic coating, now is trash, or may be used to clean tires or wheel wells.
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
Agreed. Good point, thanks for commenting. Consider coating a micro fiber in glass... Thousands of tiny blades. Harder than paint and also, harder than windshields.

Great Job on the light. Only thing I seen that you forgot to do was remove the wax before using the coating. Thanks for sharing
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
Thanks. @ 3:58 I use an IPA to remove any residue from the polish. Also noted in the description. No wax is used in this process.

How is the ceramic coating holding? Is it still nice and clear or is it star to show some yellow any updates?
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522 4 года назад
This only lasted about 6 months in most cases that I've tested. There are a lot of variables to consider like driving conditions and storage conditions. But for what it cost it was worth testing. Just wish the instructions were coherent. Yellowing occurs pretty quick once the coating fades (assuming the factory varnish is removed or has failed). That's what I've noted. Hope that helps.

Would letting the ceramic coat dry then applying a 2nd coat extend the lifetime of the ceramic protection on the headlight?
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522 4 года назад
More than one coat can be applied yes. It seems to me that extra coats would help with durability in regards to driving conditions. Personally I would say an extra coat will give you a better chance of getting the maximum age out of it, but ultimately you won't be adding a year per coat. For example, this particular coating has been reported to work from 1 month to a year. That's a big range. I hope that helps answer the question.

only 4 drops is not enough, why so greedy
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
Honestly, I wanted to follow the directions as close as possible, they suggested that 8 drops would cover a much larger area than a headlight. It's important to remember that this is an affordable ceramic, and thus loading it up would defeat the point of it being affordable. More than one coat would have been a better way for me to go I think. One coat applied this way gave me one year of protection. I'm satisfied with what I got and paid for. Hope that answers your question. Have a good one. 👍

How long does this ceramic coating last without fading?
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
Sorry for the delayed response. Typically on paint these coatings last anywhere from 1 - 5 years. However, specific ceramics are manufactured for plastic use. I haven't used one of these coatings yet. I'm currently testing the longevity of these products on numerous test subjects. Including a truck panel that has no clear coat. The panel I refer to has been coated for about 2-3 months and is the only part of the truck that still beads. I hope I answered your question. If I see any signs of fading or otherwise failure of the coating, I will note it and report back.

@@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522 Hi, are you still using MR-FIX9H for headlights? are they doing fine after almost 1 year?
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
@@MotociclistaAmigoFinanciarMoto some clarity has diminished. Though no oxidation has returned the the lights yet and the vehicle is parked in the sun all day everyday. It seems to be protected still. Note that this ceramic was not designed for headlights. I'll follow up with an update as soon as I can. Hope this helps.

how long do the headlights stay shiny?
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522 4 года назад
I found this product lasts about 6 months to a year on plastic. In my opinion, if your headlights have lost the original varnish this will only be a temporary solution. Remember, this product was designed for paint.

Does ceramic coating mr fix 9h can be used on plastic headlights too? I want to know
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
It can. However, it was designed for paint and won't last as long on headlights. There are ceramic coatings designed for this use which would last longer. The headlight you see in the video is plastic. Approximately 1 year later before I noticed any changes.

I'm thinking of using gtechniq c1 on my plastic headlights after I restore them
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
I've made an update in the description. I got approximately a year of protection from this product and at the time of purchase I think I paid around $8-$10. If you do use gtechnique's product, please let us know how it goes and your thoughts. I hear great things about their products. 👍

@@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522 I'm in the process of doing my headlights. Used 1000 grit then moved to 3000 grit. At the moment they are sanded horizontally. Sadly I didn't get the ceramic coating as I was wondering for the price if it was worth it.
@evolutionautomotivedetaili8522
Makes perfect sense. I like your approach. There is a tool out there that I often hear referred to as a headlight steamer. Interesting tech. Reflows the surface of the plastic. I hope to obtain one soon and do a video demo/review. Good luck, though I get the sense you don't need luck. 👍
