Headphone Mixers in your Home Studio (Routing and Setup) 

Excellent video, I really appreciate this. I've been in the midst of an already 2+ year process of buying the gear to set up my own private recording studio. It started off as wanting to build a comprehensive practice/music space where I was simply purchasing instruments (literally TONS of vintage and boutique guitars, basses and tube amps, drums, cymbals, synths, electric pianos, drum machines, _really_ cool vintage and boutique effects and a PA) and that eventually turned into building a studio once I realized how different it was from 20 years ago to book the local studio near me as far as time frames to book and pricing. I'm now well into the process of acquiring recording gear - tons of front end (pre's, EQ's) a bunch of compressors, a 1" 8 track reel to reel (for fun, tracking drums on tape before dumping it into the DAW) and a mic collection I'm already fairly proud of. The plan has been for the last piece of gear I'm going to purchase is the interface and "super" computer since the technology on that stuff moves _SO_ fast. As I'm now closing into the end of the process, the Galaxy 32 has consistently remained at the top of my list of candidates for a primary DAW and I'll likely use a 192 and/or HD/IO for more outputs for things like headphone mixes and hardware inserts. So videos like these have been really helpful. I look forward to booking at least a couple of Zoom consultations with you once I'm in the space and going through the process of setting everything up. I tried for a long time to work with cue mixers but won't do it now because most people recording in a studio do not know how to make a proper mix, so you go out to find out why their cans sound terrible and everything is cranked up and clipping. Now I have headphone amps that allow me to put a stereo mix in the cans, and also feed them a dry of just their input. I let them blend between the 2 sources and 90% of the time they are happy with that. About 10% of the time I will add a little of something else into that dry feed like click or reverb etc, but most of the time, my stereo mix and a solo is all anyone needs. So much faster and less fiddly.

This is exactly how i have my orion studio setup. i randomly one day explored with the adat ins on the p16 rack mounted system and that changed the game for me especially for cable management lol !! and im able to route anything that i want. The best!!! I also discovered that i may have to use the 8 channels of actual analog because once my audient 8 pres come in im going to need the next set of adats on the interface to use for my audient pres. still figuring that out.

this is really Good ( not for me since I Trk Solo ) but i can see how this would be great for a Full Band needing a curtain Mix in their Cans. The Routing is Super cool how it done in Sofware.

This is right on time for me as I’ve been considering moving to the P16 for my headphone monitoring. What are you physically connecting your audio interface to for the headphone feed? I’m assuming the Powerplay P16-I.

You can do the same thing out of the box with Reaper and your phone or tablet becomes the controller for your personal mixer....

are you not in the basement any more? The same video that you treated the room?

How do you deal with playback during recording? Do you use tge direct monitoring setting in Pro-Tools, so that the input is not monitored until it is recorded or just mute the direct monitoring from the galaxy, to hear the recording?

What are the advantages of doing the routing to the P16 inside the interface virtual console vs doing it as a template inside the DAW?

Hello. Does it have enough headphone amp output to use with a 250 ohms beyerdynamic 770?

I’m assuming the answer is no because you’re using it, but do you ever have anything wonky with phase/latency since you’re mixing analog and adat ins? (I’m assuming those converters have different latencies) Specifically, if you’ve got your stereo mix going to 1-2 (adat) and you’ve got a bass overdub on 9 - there’s not any bass weirdness? If you’re never doubling anything, I guess it wouldn’t be a problem.

So, would you say, the Galaxy negates the need for a digital patch like the Flock patch?

There’s no way I’m setting up a system like that in a commercial studio. I don’t even think it’s a good idea to manage cues digitally because of latency-especially for singers, it’s unacceptable. I’ve set up a small analog system with an Allen and Heath console that has 16 channels and 6 auxes. That’s more than enough for most studios. I don’t have to worry about anything other than turning a few knobs

Which one of you fellow ancients thought this was a Kore 2?
