A computer scam that imitates Microsoft customer support locks the screen on your device and instructs you to call a phone number.
Everything about the warning looked real to Trish Thomas, so she followed the instructions, even giving the impostors access to her bank account. But right before she transferred any money, her radar went up.

This happened on my dad's laptop last night. I've never seen a computer freak out so bad before in my life. I called the number, and the guy did get it so my dad's computer to stop freaking out with locked notifications but then we went and installed an app which I saw on another video is total scam to get inside the files to see what they could get. Luckily my dad does no banking or anything on his laptop. Once the scan was done, they figured out he had no info on banking so they went ahead and asked me if there were any other computers they could scan, and I said no. After that he asked me about my bank, and I clearly just hung up because that was one to many red flags. After the call I went and cleaned his compueter myself and now it's working well. I told him to never click on any weird sites or things that may make u think something is wrong with your laptop. Lesson learned.

This is Great Important information to know!!!! Because.....it happened to me about an hour ago. At first I thought the warning was real when I realized, Microsoft will never call you out the blue. Every one truly needs to be ever vigilant and alert, when using the Internet each day, not matter what anti-virus software you have on your desktop or laptop computer.

Thank YOU!! They tried this on me, but I gave no banking info and I questioned a lot...and was disconnected! Microsoft will never ask you to call them.

My mom fell for one of these scams a couple years ago but fortunately her bank knew those transactions looked suspicious and they gave her her money back.

How do we get rid of the items on our screen so we can get into our computer? What's the big secret?

Simply close the browser tab, Ctrl+w shortcut. Or you can close the browser completely, Alt+F4. Usually you can’t do that with screen buttons since the scam pop up immediately becomes full screen once open. Alternatively you can press Ctrl+Alt+Del and select the task manager, click on the browser app icon in the list and end its task. If all the above mentioned remedies fail, don’t be duped by that message like “don’t turn off your computer” - yes, you can turn it off then restart to solve; press and hold the Power button until it really turns off or unplug the power supply (and battery, if applicable). Then turn on again. If hard reboot also fails (it’s rare) to solve your problem that means there’s a malware that has been added into the startup folder. Use another device to find out how to use the safe mode reboot (depends on what operating system you are using). Then you can can remove any recently added links and files from the startup folder: WinKey+R then type “shell:startup” (without quotes), hit Enter. Important: DON’T call that number pretending to be Microsoft. Stay safe.

"I've already experienced 3 or 4 of those; I don't fall for them." rotflmao, um obviously you 'do' fall for them because you did! I sincerely hope she no longer falls for them!

Either force restart your computer by holding the power button, or open task manager with ctrl + alt + del, and end the task.

Husband got caught last month with this. Lost 20 grand. Bank won’t pay back as they said it was his fault in downloading the app to let the scammer take control of his device. He’s nearly 80 so we’re not as savvy with tech things. We are now though!! Learned a lot this last month. We never click on anything, never answer ‘unknown number’ calls and we look up numbers we want rather than clicking on anything. There should be warnings on tv and radio every single day reminding people of the scammers. In Australia there are over 600,000 complaints re scams every year. All banks should hold transfers to first time payees for 24 hours to at least give victims of scams time to get in touch and stop the transfer. Our bank doesn’t agree with us! Anyhoo I hope everyone is becoming so aware and vigilant about these evil call centres supposedly in business making money by stealing our hard earned savings. They target all, but a high percentage are older retired people who they hope have some savings. Good luck to all in beating them.
