An exclusive inside look at Nga Kete Wananga, a tikanga Māori drug rehab centre on Auckland's North Shore, and the tāne trying to beat their addictions there. When a police raid on the centre found drugs, money, and guns the spotlight fell on the mother of gang members who runs it, Matilda Kahotea. Richard Hakaraia and Levi Tapara, graduates of the 12 step programme it runs, defend the effectiveness of the centre.
Made with support from Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air.

If she is to blame for drugs on her property then the govt is to blame for the drugs and gangs in NZ.

Keep persevering Matilda and staff. It is near impossible to help these men and their situations but it only takes a few tenacious people to help change the odds so keep persevering!

I recently met 2 well mannered men, they explained they were almost finished with your course. I new their background but I was impressed how they communicated and held themselves. I see this program will be of great benefit for attendees, but other people and organisations will complain behind your back. Because your mahi makes them all look incompetent. Association with drugs is a means for authorities to seize all assets. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Money is very tempting for anyone, but people will fall, even when your doing well. It's human nature but never give up. This world needs people like Matilda. She's the example for all of us. Imagine if there were more people like her. Your never feel alone in this world. I think that aroha she offers is the one thing most gang members lacked while growing up. Appreciate your work Matilda and Whanau ❤

As a pakeha that grew up in a community of at least 50%Māori I noticed that my brown friends got in trouble alot easier than I did . They are not any worse than us white fellas ,they are just under more scrutiny. Two times in the late eighties my friends got busted for weed when I was allowed to walk away ,I was just as guilty,I am now 57 with a clean police record, my friends not so lucky .

she needs deep intense support rather than slander,,,,,, our Maori people understand our Maori people better than any British court can ; im a pakeha raised by Ngapuhi,,,, and i see the way of learning is more connected this way! its more organic and its more about how to help others recconect with their land and their people which gives them more motivation to continue on the clean path rather than a white face telling them what to do eh ,,,,,

If a facility is provided, run at a level, where the ones running it, can talk the talk and have walked it. Why isnt it not supported? National have an aim...gangs, so these things that help at a health level, dosen't make a profit, like the justice system. Kia kaha Matilda ❤

In the interview the presenter said she has shree sons in the Headhunters gang they will not be happy with the persons involved who ruined their mums reputation and good works for the community unless of course they are above them in the Gangs

Its difficult not to believe otherwise. Gid bless you for making the effort, but it is a difficult job you have undertaken and unfortunately you will always get the negative side that when someone makes the wrong move both inside your organisation and the outsiders who have jobs to do. Kia kaha

God bless Matilda! If I am any good judge of persons, she is completely innocent. She honestly didn't know and was very hurt and disappointed. God bless the gentlemen who returned to support her, too. These people are doing the right thing and the govt should step out of their way. In support of the police, they were doing their job and did the right thing, too. But now the govt should be looking to support and help the rehab center, not shut it down. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater!
