Trauma and it’s negative effects on our mental health has been an age old problem. Therapist Shauna Quigley demystifies the healing process by sharing her story of healing her own childhood trauma. She invites you to consider the idea that trauma can be healed if we allow the body to inform the mind.
Shauna is the Founder and Director of Wellnessseeker, an online school that offers a variety of programmes, aimed directly at supporting mental and emotional difficulties. Shauna is passionate about the potential of the human spirit to heal and is convinced that everyone has the capacity to transform their suffering. She is a tireless advocate for better mental and emotional health models and services nationally and continues to educate herself on current policies and developments. Shauna is currently working in clinical practice one on one, and through workshops she brings her healing work to people everywhere. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Because y’all are saying it’s too vague, this is my interpretation: she heals by sitting with the emotion and getting up close and personal with it instead of ignoring it and running away from it like she usually would. I would imagine getting close to it is gonna bring crying but that is the purging of it. That is what she means by going towards the bad scary dark emotions you normally would want to ignore, that is actually your way out of it. Her message towards the end when she talked about the joy she experienced and washed over her with her husband is: let yourself get close and accept and feel the bad in you, you will feel free from doing so, and now you will be better able to actually feel and appreciate moments of true joy more and catch them, since you know and accepted what it feels like to feel bad. If you oppress the bad feelings you might never get to feel relief or freedom to feel true joy because you will feel too oppressed from your caged up emotions! I also like how she points out how she felt she had two sides: the one who only wanted to think good to forget the bad, and the other one who called her towards the bad emotion. This is valid and a sign of a truth of this world: there is polarity / opposites aka positive + negative , we DO have both sides in us, it’s only our culture which tries to make us believe we must be positive at all times but in reality it is a truth of life and we must not oppress it otherwise we’ll just have emotional blockages which could actually block us from true joy or healing or moving on. Being positive 24/7 is simply not the way we are naturally designed or meant to be that’s why it feels so bad to do it for a long time eventually we cannot keep doing it, we need to normalize to ourselves it is necessary to feel & accept all feelings we have whether good or bad emotions instead of shunning the bad so much accept it as it is a part of you. By ignoring your dark self you are ignoring your wounded inner self / usually wounded inner child and this part needs love attention & acceptance too This woman is amazing and she is not whiny at all , we have just normalized always having to feel good, but she is the most real and woke

This is so important to understand when you’re starting to heal from trauma, pain and mental disorders. Healing happens in the body, not in the mind. Allow yourself to feel the deepest pain you have beneath and you will heal Good luck and love Don’t give up!

I think it takes a rare breed to be able to face trauma this way. Most people cannot endure it and need an addiction to numb (soothe) it. I believe therapy helps one to slowly create insight, self awareness, and support which is needed to bring these walls down, and eventually being/feeling ready to confront this core (old) pain inside. There are simply too many beliefs that sabotage simply sitting down and feel the pain from awareness. So I believe she is right, I just don't think everyone is capable. Especially when life brings mostly sour lemons and no lemonade, circumstances are different than having the support of a relationship (the speaker might have had) and the joy of having a baby. Anyway; the only way out is through. Only by allowing to feel, we can let go. All the best to everyone around here 💛

Yes, you are right. I personally found that the daily practice of Vipassana meditation does exactly that. One learns to look at the pain without fear. It's so liberating.

This is a hopeless thought, so long as you live and breath you have hope. You will never go through something you cannot handle. You have to believe in healing and be prepared to walk through the pain. The only way out is through. God did not create us only to suffer, their a gift that suffering brings, we are all able to get there. Do not let Satans whispers empower you, allow Gods promise to get you out of everything you face, and only expect good from Him, takes practice but you have start somewhere.

A big big yes to this ... one thing, the word ‘clearing’ doesn’t sit well with me. Loving does, loving myself well, as I’ve just done with advanced cancer... taking the time to delve in deep, to make space to be with the pain so that I can transform my relationship to the core experience.. that is loving myself well

I lost my husband and my mom. My two strongholds in this life within less than 2 years of each other. I felt numb and couldn't cry. I thought what is wrong with me. I thought I need to deal with this grief. Two years later I did. It hit me just as hard as I had feared. I'm still living in it. I faced my grief and my grief has killed me. I'm alive but I'm not the person I knew. I'm not the person they counted on or relied upon. Sometimes we build up those walls because we need them to function. If I could back In time I would never tear them down. It's ok not to fall apart it's ok to keep moving forward. If it keeps you going keep doing it. This idea of facing our deepest emotions to let them go isn't what it's cracked up to be. Do what you feel you need to do to keep pushing on is my advice. I drowned myself in deepest hurt to feel the pain so i could let go. Two years later my deepest pain has left me feeling like I'm a stranger to myself. A little at a time is sometimes how we need to cope and thats ok.

I think it’s okay and normal to feel like that. It seems to me that all the typical growing and changing that you would have experienced were put to a stop when this happened to you. Allow yourself to change and grow and find joy again without guilt. Explore new hobbies and paths and allow yourself to change, the more you change the more you will grow the more you will realize your core soul has been with you all along.

To anyone reading this message Hi you... You are a strong person. You are loved and you are an important person. You will be successful in your life process. Its OK to be not perfect because there will never be a perfect human. But whatever it is you have to work hard to show the best version of yourself. You are not alone in living your life, there will always be love and love from God without you realizing it in your every breath. God loves you even more than you understand. Don't feel unloved, unwanted, unappreciated and never feel useless. You just need a little time to understand all this process and you need to work a little hard to run after your goal and get your dream back. I pray that it will be easy for you. Calm your heart. Enable your soul to face all the trials of God. May you continue to be bestowed with long-lasting sustenance. Make your happiness easy. My strong and passionate greetings to you who go through this difficult life journey but we all can definitely stand at this point and step forward for God's promises that we must have. I love a strong soul like you You are a great person because you are still able to survive until this moment with this not easy process Hi you..... Every human being is given the same advantages as God find and develop the advantages that you have so that with it your self-confidence, sense of worth and a sense of desire will grow in you. Sad and disappointed human, it's natural and allowed, what is not allowed is that you dissolve in your sadness and your adversity Hi you..... Last but not least, keep up the spirit, keep going, keep growing, good luck in all of your goals. I'm proud of you personally who have this strong soul😍😘🤗

Nice video. Detox the mind. Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Yes,. i too have been taking walks with myself...not doing much. Mostly, reading, or sitting and enjoying what i see, the birds, the trees. a latte sit and relax. I allow to doing nothing, imagine my body relaxed, notice my breath. Sometimes i knit or write. I actually stopped talking to anyone who is negative and i feel relieved to even make the decision. I am healing my body, my mind before i do anything new. I've been through a rough patch, too many losses, without even time to grieve, so now in the quiet i cry. And, i console myself.

Brilliant. This is exactly the sort of healing I am interested in. It is what I have been discovering at last myself. So much emphasis is put on the power of thought and of course this is true, but this, this is sooo important. To listen to what our body is trying to communicate to us through our anxiety symptoms by giving gentle breath and space to those physical areas manifesting the stress is in itself like a respect and a listening to what our bodies are telling us. This is, I reckon, the gateway to self love. Thank you so much, amazing brave woman!!

The process is quite subtle but she does explain it, she felt the feeling in her body, went inward to connect to the feeling and sat with it, by doing so the emotion and memory was revealed to her. This process makes the memory conscious, breaks the pattern and releases the energy associated with it. This is the healing process.
@keelobrown4991

Yea, theres something called bioenergetics, which is forms of exericses (physical) that are designed to release trauma and tension and trapped emotion from your body. Sitting with your body and listening to it is good, but being aware of the trauma wont get rid of it. Bioenergetics is the next step, literally purging it from your body.

That 10-year-old self had a thought -- I have nothing In this world. Tthat thought got lodged and wedged into the tissues and energetic space of your body. When you discovered the moment, the story that took place between you and another little kid and also between your own thoughts, the intense emotional reaction, and the felt sense within the body. Your body carried the burden of this negative core belief about the world and about yourself. Your story was short and sweet as a 10-year-old God I have nothing. The end. You discovered later that there was so much more to the story, that your 10-year-old self didn't have all the information, and that the power of one thought could impact emotional and physiological states. I believe that the very way you tell the story actually affirms that the intensity comes from the thought; Just like in the Bible it says in the beginning there was the word. There were a few words and it brought life to all these other experiences. Your doorway out was through the body and paying attention to its semantic narrative, but your doorway in was a single unconscious powerfully impactful, negative core belie f about the world. A belief is simply a thought that we've had many times either consciously or unconsciously. Blessings on your healing, thank you for sharing your story, for giving us new words and a new way of looking at things.
