Health Care Half Hour - Involuntary Commitments

I’m a veteran who when to the VA for a regular appointment when I told my physician the VA has failed to provide me mental health treatment after seven months of requesting support they sent me to the ER to “help get the process going” when I arrived they treated me like I was in distress and attempted to involuntarily commit me. After I left they threatened to send police to my house if I didn’t return. It was extremely scary and I will never return to the VA.

I'm autistic and suffer from severe and easily triggered CPTSD and speaking as someone who has been IVCd twice, I am 100 percent in favor of IVC being as easy and straightforward as possible. At the time I was, I was not in my right mind and being held for a week until I stabilized was precisely what I needed. In my specific case, I cannot be medicated because I have gastroparesis and psych meds are very bad for that, so it actually puts my mind at ease knowing that there's a system in place for putting me in "time out" when I'm in a bad place and can't think properly. Because that's the thing about mental illness, we're not always capable of judging our own state of mind. It's controversial to say so, but it's true all the same.
