HEALTH - STONEFIST LIVE FROM IL DUOMO :: an 8K experience

This live video for HEALTH's "STONEFIST" was filmed at London's The Dome Tufnell Park this past June. Shot by the renowned Pulse Films director Giorgio Testi (who is known for his live films of Blur, The Rolling Stones, Savages and more) as a single shot on a Sony F65 8k camera, the video is the first live concert film to be shot in 8k, with all movement executed by zooms and pans.
Speaking about the challenges of shooting a live clip in one shot, Giorgio said "I love long takes at gigs, but it's usually pretty hard to deliver an interesting long take during an actual concert in front of an audience, especially if you want to offer different point of views through out: you really only have 1 take to deliver that, and it's really challenging." In order to combat that challenge he developed a method of creating a 3 dimensional silk screen, wherein he composed high definition frames within a single shot in order to allow him to make movements in post production through pans and zooms to give the single camera shot a multi-camera experience.

to those of you who hate on this video, seemed like you guys dont understand what 8k really do... 8k allows the capture of video with lossless quality, if you use your iphone to capture a video on standard 1080 and you try to crop it during editing, you will notice how much the video quality is being loss. 8k allows you to crop parts of video without having any drop in the video quality. One best example is 0:33-0:35. Did you guys see the double layered video with a close up of the guitarist in translucent on top of the original video? those are all taken in a single shot. Normally to get these images into the video, you will need to set up 2 different camera, 1 for a closeup and 2nd camera to shoot the whole video. What the 8k camera does is allowing video director to capture the whole band at a single shot and maximize a videographer's creativity in terms of layering the video during editing. I thought this is a cool thing. I guess 8k is so new that most people might not get it the genius behind the editing and shots of this video...

Essentially, this is something neat for video editing, where the director can use a single camera to layer effects into the video later. As far as the viewer is concerned though why not use 2 different cameras? I guess the logistics of that might be complicated in certain circumstances. However, It's a bit of a con branding this video all over as 8K though (an 8K experience), when the viewer doesn't really need to care what it was shot on, they just see the output, which in this case is very much not at 8K resolution. I suppose that's what happens when you leave it to journalists to market ("hype") the media.

The vicious edge to Jake's vocals here is one of my favorite things about this performance. On record he's soft and relaxed, but here it's like boiling water.

I'm pretty naive about their live setup - anyone know how they're getting their sounds cos nothing really sounds like conventional amps/drums to me? Are they running their guitars through software? Sound really different and cool whatever it is.

+D.C. Stranded (Mr. Wright) if i am not wrong the benefit of 4k video is that you wont get a loss of quality when cropping during editing, so i assume 8k is a better version of that. Hence, even though you see the close up of the band members which normally need multiple cameras in order to capture the images for all the aspects of the video, the 8k make it possible for him to capture everything from a single shot and do the layering all at editing... pretty cool imo

+Paul Badman it was shot in 8K and then put together in 1080, hence the zooms. You can't zoom in and still have 8k. Do your homework before firing off over an amazing idea. It just leaves you looking like a tool.

+Paul Badman i think you misunderstood what does 8k really do....this whole video shows off the editing and capturing technique which is based on an 8k video camera and how a camera director able to process the video during edit

it was filmed in 8K, it was outputted in 1080. If the output of a film or video had to be literal you'd see every dvd, blu-ray or digital release you own have a stupid name to cover that. Do you realise that to truly watch 8K you need a screen bigger than imax? Can't see you watching anything in 8K in the near future mate.

Uh? So they all just stand around and pretend to play string instruments? What the bassist is playing matches up with NOTHING going on in the music. Its a bunch of backtracks, a drummer, and a vocalist. Please don't try and tell me they're using a bunch of pedals and effects.. cause they're maybe playing 10% of whats happening in the music. I used to like this band until I saw all their live videos.
