There are some highly capable medicos here and some of them cost a pretty penny ; about a third of the cost in Canada. And as for your $8 tetanus shot , you couldn't even shoplift that in Canada at that price. That much-touted Canadian healthcare system has truly gone down the crapper. There are hundreds of thousands of people in British Columbia who don't have a family doctor (or dentist)and for those poor saps , getting something like a tetanus shot would entail running from pillar to post trying to get into one of the vastly overwhelmed public clinics. Your final option would be to wait maybe 6 or 7 hours at emergency. How wonderful to know that here in this 'third world' country I could be in front of a doctor in the next hour. My dentist here has more modern equipment than my guy in BC and I like his attitude better as well. His staff are all uniformed , consummately professional and totally sweet to me. I swear these Cambodian healthcare people are all made of marzipan.
@ForRiel
@ForRiel 10 месяцев назад
Sweet..... Maybe that's why you are always the dentist 🤔 Yes it seems Cambodia is much better in a few departments than some western countries. I think Covid had a huge toll on doctor's plus the huge amount of money and time it takes to become one is making a shortage.

You have answered all my concerns about Siem Reap medical care and made me feel much better about a possible future in SR. I have been there before and have read the expat forums about local care, which was pretty rudimentary -- to be kind. Your report was so much better. I live in Bangkok where hospital care is pretty outstanding. However, Thailand is making it more and more difficult for westerners to stay here -- without being Asian. Wink wink . . . Two thumbs up! Take care you guys!

I can't believe Jeremy got Typhoid. I'm surprised he is alive. How did the doctor say that he contracted it? I caught e-coli poisoning in the Philippines and was hooked up to iv's in the hospital for two days. The doctor thinks I contracted it from the ice cubes in some iced tea at a restaurant.

You are from OZ, I know you are more than aware of different types of skin cancers. I have had all of them even Melanoma. I lived! I had three surgeries at the Phuket Bangkok Hospital. Thanks for the wonderful presentation on health care in Siem Reap. I have spent a fair amount of time researching health care options in Asia, I believe this is the first You Tube video of this nature with reference to Cambodia... so, you are performing a valuable pubic service. I clicked on the link to Safety Wing... apparently they didn't like my age, single status or dollar amount of coverage requested. Separately, I'm working through Pacific Cross with AXA Global HealthCare. The policy provides for repatriation under certain circumstances (in the USA I will remain fully insured but only accessible when physically in the USA) but, in reality in all but the worst cases they ship you to Bangkok and spend down the policy benefit. I don't know what happens when one is spent out - flat broke... I wonder if they just kick you to the curb? Anyway, I'm probably covered for 95% of the risks I perceive with the AXA plan and it is affordable... at least for now. Thanks again for all that you two do!

@@ForRiel Thanks Claire, seeing I will be over 60yrs old when I arrive in Cambodia the SafetyNet Website would suggest I would not qualify " Eligibility up to 60 years old (renewal without age limit)". Siem Riep Expats FB page provided 3 recommendations LUMA Asia Care, April MHC LUMA & AIA and I am currently comparing Plan examples provided. One of the 3 provided an example cost of treating a broken leg at one of the main Siem Riep Hospitals to be around $15000 which seemed high considering a walk in non-insured foreigner to almost any German Hospital could expect to be charged around $3500 which would mean it would be considerably cheaper to fly back to Germany for treatment which doesnt seem right. Would you guys maybe be able to find out what the average charge for a foreigner with no insurance would expect to pay for a walk in to a Siem Riep Hospital to have a Broken leg treated as an example.

For Riel, I saw you being tested with your blood pressure and height or weight was that before your vaccination. Are those tests required? Here in the Philippines, vaccination used to be fast and direct without those check-ups before the start of the COVID pandemic but after that, I find it weird now that they require patients to have some tests even just for simple vaccines such as those for tetanus or typhoid.

Question for you. Have you heard if the rabies vaccine for humans is available at Angkor Japan Friendship Hospital or anywhere in Siem Reap? The cost for the vaccine in the US is outrageous. We do animal welfare volunteering and I'd love to have the vaccine.
@ForRiel
@ForRiel 9 месяцев назад
Yes it is readily available here, I think it's around $20 per shot. I think it's 1 + another 4 if you get bitten but not sure.
@JamesRussel-o7e
@JamesRussel-o7e 9 месяцев назад
@@ForRiel Correct. 4 doses if bitten. 2 doses for pre-exposure prophylaxis - recommended if doing high risk things like animal welfare volunteering. At least that's the recommendation in the USA. A single dose of rabies vaccine in the USA is nearly $400. Just crazy. Do you know if I would need to go to a clinic like you did for your tetanus vaccine? Or do pharmacies sell the vaccine? We are both Registered Nurses and my wife could give me the stab! LOL

Overseas Health Insurance is a box of the unknown. I was watching another YT channel talking about world wide coverage health insurance carriers. The broker mentioned that U.K. based companies are better due to the strict underwriting impossed by the U.K. regulators. Especially in relation to pre-existing conditions. And be wary of Pre-Authorization vs. Pre-Certification clauses (Pre-Auth preferred). The broker mentioned that the most pushed carrier plans are the least protective of the consumer, but they make the carrier money.

Wow, such timing. I am a long time subscriber, as I had intentions to move to Kampot when I took retirement. I had visited Cambodia, and Kampot in particular, many times in the years past. I left after only two months as I had been sick nearly the whole time and got a first hand look at the quality of healthcare and the cleanliness of the facilities there. After two visits to clinics and two to a hospital, I felt I was worse off than when I started. One "Dr" made four different diagnosis complete with treatment plans in less than ten minutes, changing her mind and actually telling me "No, that might make it worse". I finally made plans to fly back to the US while still sick to seek help from competent doctors. My travel insurance and BCBS health insurance were both rejected by all of them, and I was told to pay them and then seek reimbursement. Folks should be very informed as to what they are getting in to if they have ongoing health issues before moving to Cambodia. From your video, it seems that Siem Reap may have it together a bit more than other places. Cheers
@ForRiel
@ForRiel 10 месяцев назад
Siem Reap is far bigger than Kampot, plus it has more Tourists and expats living here. It's good enough to help with almost anything or at least patch you up and fly you out. You could also get a video Doctor's call as well.
