There is a big difference between joining your friends on trips, where you pay your own way, and having friends that drop 500,000 for you while you pay nothing. I have never had a "friend" like that and I do not know anyone who has either. In any job I have ever had there has always been a ethics guide we had to sign which explained that we were never to accept hospitality/gifts from anyone whether as part of a business gathering or offered on an individual/personal basis. I know it is the same in all countries, but there really is one set of rules for the rich and powerful and on totally different set for the rest of us.
I worked in a bank here in Australia and we had to report any gifts over value of Aud$50 or more. I can’t see how he thought it was ok to go on the gravy boat and planes and holidays all these years without it being a conflict of interest to him.

A lot of our laws are very, very out of date. We need to start amending them! There must be terms on the supreme court judges. They should not serve for life. This law is archaic! Everyone should be held accountable for crimes. No one is above the law!!
Agreed. Life time appointments were fine when the average person lived to their early 60's. Now, that's 40 years or more on the bench. I agree that their terms should not be short or they may be too easily swayed, but Thomas is case in point that too long of a tenure is equally corrupting. Maybe a 20 or 21 year term?

The issue with the supreme court is that you want stable decisions over long periods of time, introducing shorter terms where people endeavor to be appointed takes them to the pitfall of politics which shouldn't be present in the judiciary.

As a librarian and employee of my county, we were told we would be fired if we accepted gifts from patrons. A public servant should not be playing favorites and beholden to those who give the best gifts.

He may have, but that's 2 different things. He files a separate report with the court, they don't have access to his taxes. How in the WORLD did this guy get on the Supreme Court!? Suddenly he’s confused about appropriate conduct in a judicial position!? GIVE ME A BREAK! He should be immediately removed!!
There are 2 key points being overlooked. First is that on many of those trips there were other people there who did have business before the Supreme Court which does create a conflict of interests. Second, Thomas was using a private jet as his own personal jet which is a clear violation of the law. What were these vacations really for? In some of them they had people from businesses, organizations, etc... that at best create a conflict of interests and at worse was used to influence Thomas' vote. In none of the case that Thomas sat on did he recuse himself. This is a violation of the Supreme Courts own rules. I would like to point out that Thomas has been lying to the public. He has been portraying himself a simple man who preferes to just stay in the US for vacations, not into anything fancy, etc... Now we see it was all a big lie. He loves to hang out with the rich and powerful while enjoying lavish vacations outside the US and iscolate from what the average American has to deal with.
In my job I have to disclose gifts all gifts $10 or above. You'd think someone of that status wouldn't need gifts but would disclose hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts. As vulgar as he is, his wife is worse.

We need laws for independence and term limits for the Supreme Court. We don't have them, so there's nothing compelling people without ethics (like Thomas) to just do as they please.
