As a teacher in a college writing/English setting,I once had one of these lost boys as a student. He was “lost” and said so. He looked for a way to negotiate a world that he grew up believing was twisted and wrong. He discovered that writing gave him a way to move forward. Education is the key. I also have taught a few of the girls. Institutional abuse is real.

I’m glad they are focusing on the challenges that boys face in polygamist communities. The labor trafficking/loss of an education are huge problems. I wish more had been mentioned about labor related injuries, boys being driven out to avoid competition for brides, sexual abuse of men, and the total lack of control over their lives.

You guys are killing it with the content! Also, I was thinking recently that I’d love to see more interviews of Sam’s siblings. I totally understand that many of them are probably private people, and it can be triggering to them to recount their time in the FLDS. So, if at any time they may be comfort to share I’m sure many of us would appreciate their perspectives. ❤

A good work ethic is a very important thing but completely taking a persons childhood away is a catastrophe and a failure to raise well rounded adults 😢 so sad and shameful 😢

I’m curious as to what would have been Sam’s life had been like had he remained in Short Creek. How old were men when they were assigned their first wives? What happened to the excess men before the Lost Boys became a thing? Did most voluntarily leave like Sam or were they also kicked out for minor infractions? How long after a man’s first marriage was he assigned additional wives? So often we focus on the horrible effects of enforced polygamy on women I have never learned much about the men’s lived experience, other than the top leaders of theses groups.

Listen. Trauma is not a competition. Once you are out of an emergency situation, all people(boys in this case) deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. They deserve to be cared for, not used. ***edit to add, this is why child labor laws exist, because people will cut corners in unethical ways if left unchecked. Regulations exist because Someone did it. Also, would like to see a remake of Newsies with these kids. Open the gates and seize the day indeed.

Traditional Mormon churches don’t let you leave their church at least in name even if you join another church. I joined another one in 1985 and wrote a letter to remove my name and to this day they still show up at every house we move to and I got a birthday card from the relief society

I first heard about the Lost Boys years ago from an Oprah documentary called Sons of Perdition. It's really sad what those boys go through. It reminds me somewhat of the Amish, in that they only have that limited skill set and it takes a lot for them to adapt on the outside. I'm glad they took Winston to task a bit. I'm Canadian and usually in interviews he's quite slick and tries to say that he is nothing like Warren and that he never had underage wives, which is not true. In this interview, he seemed to lie less and I wonder why. Maybe because the courts have ruled to polygamy illegal here, so he knows he has nothing to gain by lying? In any case, he's just as terrible as Warren because he knew about these marriages and helped traffic kids, either for marriage or labour. They get into more in the next episode, which I was glad to see.

The LDS Church requires members to promise in the temple to give everything that they have been blessed with or that they may be blessed with to the LDS Church. Of course they don’t tell you that before you go through the temple the first time.

Mormonism contradicts the Bible. They believe it wasn’t translated correctly and it can’t be trusted. Mormons believe their prophets are the “mouthpiece” for God, and that Joseph Smith restored Christianity to its original form by introducing Masonic temple rituals into the religion.

The question of companies taking something off your check for the priesthood... I grew up in FLDS and there was a handful of times the owner of the company I worked for would call the foreman and talk to the crew on speaker phone and tell us he is going to turn full amount of our check in for us no exception

I will send out to work at 12 years old making a paycheck my dad took everything and told my boss to just make sure I was taken care of dropped out at 3rd grade and like you mentioned construction is all I know how do dirt work heavy equipment operator

I don't believe that the FLDS sets up men for failure with the construction education. It's what's needed in the group and what can make money the easiest. It's not a control thing is what's relevant to the lives of the men in the group. I also notice Melissa you refer to LDS as "we" but Sam never associates being in the FLDS as being better or worse just as it was and is. I appreciate that. In many ways the LDS is a very toxic religion and not following the original doctrine as the FLDS is.
