I am an older person, lived many years, and I’m the granddaughter of a forestry fire fighter. I promise you that you will see new birth, better growth from the trees that remain and likely from many you thought to be dead. (Have you counted the ones STILL LIVING?) Think about it: this is likely not the first fire those centuries old trees have seen!! And the great Creator of all has cleared the land for you!!! The best was to think about it. You already have a conservation goal. Although the timing is not of your choosing, consider this nature taking over the labor involved in a control burn.

Yes, I agree with what was just said olive trees are resilient to fires, diseases, and drought. Why do you think they lasted this long? They are very strong! Remember some of those trees may be 100-1000 years old. They have probably seen fire before. Some that burn for a long time may be gone but many will live.

One year ago on August 8th 101 people died in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii. We can never rebuild or regain that devastating loss of lives and I am so glad for Sara to say to stay back - even though your heart wants you there. Reading all the comments made me think how no place on earth is safe from such disasters. 4 years ago 100 people died in a horrible fire in Greece. Many small children were among them. I neen not mention of course about the loss of propeperties, houses, businesses and all the amazing forest life. The whole country was in shock. I am 47 years old. Since I can remember every summer in Greece we suffer from fires. My anger is bigger than my sadness. Dear Luca, you are blessed to have such a wise wife. Sarah you are blessed to have such a brave husband. Your children are blessed to have such wonderful parents.
And that’s one reason I wouldn’t move to Southern Mediterranean. If we aren’t burningwe’re flooding. I’m 70 years old and it rained in the UK for almost all the autumn and the winter and the spring and I’ve never known anything like it before.
Not sure why people don’t borrow a tractor and plough a big tract clear to form a fire break. I’m sure in the side of France it’s against the law if you don’t have a fibre between properties.

Our town in South Africa was nearly destroyed by bush fires seven years ago. Even a few months afterwards it was amazing to see the new growth. The land will renew itself and by the Spring you will see so much new life.
Yes, massive fires in 2017, in South Africa. I was there. 😢 The bush does grow back over time, but many people were unisured. It's lives that are so precious.

Please consider the placement of your new home & the building materials before building. I would also research how many fires have existed near your property. Why are people commenting about how Sarah should or shouldn't be "allowing" Luca to do something? Sarah is Luca's wife, not mother. At the end of the day, they are two grown adults. Sarah can advise in favour of, or against something, but the final decision on what to do and the responsibility for his choices is on Luca. I think they're doing great as a couple though, and really balance each other out 🙂
1. So glad you only lost some trees As someone from Australia who lives in fire areas: 2. NEVER take a child into an active fire area - OMG guys... things turn emergency very quickly. I get you may not have had someone to leave her with but then Sarah stays in town with Lucia. 3. I was in Sicily in June and couldn't believe there are no fire breaks - these are cleared areas that happen regularly in the landscape so if a fire starts, it doesn't keep going - it gets stopped. Think about this rather than planting trees where the others burned - OR - plant trees that do not burn in a bush fire on the boundary. So glad everything and your family are all ok. It is a terribly emotional time - everytime we evacuate it's traumatic so wishing you a speedy recovery.
Heartbreaking. Luckily, the fire didn't come near the town. Where I live in Australia, we have massive fires,huge loss of life, of people, animals, homes, and land. You are blessed! I to have had a CSF leak since 2019. A neurosurgeon did a CT myelogram and tore my dura in two places. He denied what happened and dismissed me from his care. I've had five blood patches and one surgery to path the leak. I also tried nerve block injections at the base of my skull to try to stop the pain. My life is different and my abilities are different, but I decided not to have a second surgery. Although I no longer remember what life was like without a constant headache, nerve pain, dizziness, etc., my life is still full of love, family, friendships and God has been so good to me. I had to come to a place of peace. My life is blessed and I focus on those blessings, not my limitations! You will decide what is best for you and your beautiful family with prayer and God will continue to bless your life too! He will help you adjust and give you peace too! I hope this encourages you!

I live in the hills outside Los Angeles and 5 years ago we went through a massive fire that burned through the Santa Monica Mountains all the way to the beaches of Malibu. We lost huge Live Oak trees that were 100s of years old. Luckily, some trees that looked dead eventually came back to life-a bit deformed, but still growing. Some burned trees continue to fall, though...just last week one fell by the trail I hike everyday. You will witness the amazing ability of nature to regenerate itself. I'm glad you are all safe! And yes, you are very lucky it was not windy!
I used to live in LA and the fires got worse each year 😢 I moved to Panama and they burn fields at the end of dry season. I always get nervous they will get out of control.

I'm so sorry about your new property. I'm glad that Sara wouldn't let you go over to where the fire was. Luca, I started crying when you said that you didn't want the surgery right now. You wanted to see your new baby. I'm 71 and my husband is 73 and I'd much rather have him at 60 percent than not at all. We've had multiple surgeries and can't do everything that we used to, but you learn to adapt. Also surgeries are so painful and the more surgeries that you have increases your chances of getting dementia. We love your family and we will keep you in our prayers. ❤
Your comments about your choices and why you do what you have been doing.... 🎉🎉🎉... it took me back to my dad.... he was told never to reach over his head to pull himself up into a semi truck because of the condition of his heart. This was back in 1972. My mom wanted to protect him from all things that could happen to him. One day my mom came home and found dad driving a farmers tractor. My mom was very sad but he sat her down and had a huge talk about what he needed to do and how he would listen to his body. My mom realized she needed to put his needs and trust his feelings regarding his health. My dad lived thru two more heart surgeries and listened to his body for another 19 years and felt fulfilled as a man. He was 72 . Listen to each other and continue to support each other ❤❤❤that's what real love is ❤❤❤.

Men think differently than women...we are nurturers and Sara you're doing what comes naturally, caring. I was in Greece many years ago when this happened, we were evacuated and the fire literally stopped just at the corner of our Greek owners property. I felt so much for them all. It was apparently started by a bee owner smoking his apiary on this occasion Please keep safe 😳 nature is strong and so are you. 💪💪💪👏👏🙏x

I could hardly bear to watch this episode. It is so so sad. Fires are terrifying! Thirty years ago or more the hillside next to our house in southern Portugal burnt down. My father climbed the hill all the next day first with a fire extinguisher and then we took buckets of water to try to extinguish the burning embers inside the olive trees. All these memories came flooding back to me just now. The firefighter did an amazing job! Sadly we see the helicopters flying over often in the Algarve bringing water from the sea to quench the fires. You have done everything to protect your land by cleaning it, as we do every year too. It’s heartbreaking that you have lost those old trees but the land will regenerate. There will be a rebirth in some way or other. Thank you also for having the courage to talk about how you feel about waiting for more treatment. I have so much respect for you and Sara in every challenge that you face. 💕
I understand that many fires in Portugal are man-made. Firefighters there are paid by the job or fires they put out, not all year long and when there are no fires, unlike elsewhere in Europe. That's insane! There are so many more humans inhabiting our little planet. We must all bear responsibility for our actions.

I agree too. Sometimes farmers set fires to clear the ground cover. I think it will be a blessing in disguise. It will kill all the bugs and insects that attack the olive trees.
I am so sorry for your loss. We lost a house and trees to a wildfire 20 years ago here in Oregon. I can still remember the smell. It was amazing to see the regrowth come quickly. Where I live in the Blue Mountains, Australia we have mega bushfires. Please never drive or go towards a fire, as they are so unpredictable. Like you said, if it had been windy, it would have been so much worse. Best to let the experts take care of it. Stay safe.

I remember when we were in Sicyli in the spring and Guseppe said that when he was young , most of the plots were well-meintentaintment and fires did not break out so often. Another problem is thoughtless starting a fire in such a large drought. Very importany thing is that you think carefully about the location of your future home so that it is safe. Coming back to what Luka said thathe cant live and do nothing because of the disease, I understend him perfectly because even after the cancer diagnosis and after the first shock, which lastet few months, I partially returned to my previous activity because I cant live otherwise qnd it gives me joy. What a raw and honest video. I have never ever thought that Luca was selfish or that any decisions made were not fully discussed and decided upon by both. Anyone who comments to the contrary is trying to make contoversey. It is rare in todays world to see a married couple be in sync and as you two. To make comments about life aultering decision, when we only see 30 minutes out of your life of days and weeks of real life is ludicrous. You are such a beautiful family. You are looking at it wrong: They are incredibly blessed (take it from someone with challenges).. They can walk, other than health blips they still are relatively healthy, they have an amazing daughter with another blessing coming (that annoyed me when they were preferring a boy...they need to be grateful they can have ANY kids let alone healthy, happy ones)..they have money streams and can afford multiple properties, multiple vacations (I haven't had a vacation since 2010 and can't walk and lost my whole family within the last 5 years). THEY HAVE THEIR PARENTS and SIBLINGS. Friends who help them take care of their responsibilities. Meals in restaurants. Did I say multiple lux vacations? Multiple homes in stunning locations. OH and they have EACH OTHER which many many people never find in a lifetime. Yeah.. Totally different right?

Looks like very steep terrain which is likely why access was limited for fire water tankers. Surely out of breath from hiking and poor air quality and no doubt emotionally drained. Bless everyone involved.

How awful to have to wait so long to get an ok to put fire out...a little frustrating and stressful to say the least. I'm so glad more damage wasn't done, but sad for the trees that were lost. The olive trees are very strong. They will probably recover and in the future produce again. I'm from Northern California USA. We are having large fires now. One of the fires here has burnt about 830 thousand acres. I will pray for you, that your beautiful olive trees on your land will be safe.

I’m so sorry for the loss of some of your trees. Hopefully some will regrow. I live in New Mexico where we have a lot of forest fires-in the most recent one near me over 500 homes were lost as well as many businesses. Please be aware of flooding off of burn scars. It can be VERY VERY dangerous. The water moves very fast down hill because there is nothing to stop it. It brings down ash and mud. I will keep you all in my thoughts! Sarah I so understand about wanting to protect your spouse. My husband has a lung disease as well as some other health issues. He has always worked hard and been an outdoors man. I wanted him to stay inside and not do things to protect him but have ended letting him do whatever because it makes him happy. He was miserable just sitting inside. We want to protect them out of love ❤
I watch The Indi Project and RU-vid. They bought a property in Portugal a couple of years ago. Just after buying property they went to Canada. There was torrential rain and fires whilst they were away and it severally damaged their new property. Luckily the fire did not damage the house. If you look at their property now you will see apple trees, cherry trees, olive trees full of fruit. Not all survived but many did this just goes to show how the earth is so resultant and so are we. So sorry you are having to go through this but there will be bright times ahead. ❤
