I laughed at the beginning when each player pointed out this was a very unfavorable matchup for them. It reminds me of how Kripp always says that he's unfavored at the beginning of every single arena game, even though he has an 80% win rate most of the time. I guess when you're being recorded it's better to set expectations low and exceed them than sound cocky and end up losing.

My guess is that Kibler was assuming Amaz was playing Exodia, which ignores taunt, but it was actually Arcane Giant, which may have to clear taunts to win. This was very relevant in the game -- the Arcane Giant was cleared by Brawl, and the Sorcerer's Apprentice couldn't attack through the Dirty Rat for lethal.

Kibler is also playing a very odd version of quest warrior as well. There are at least 3 different ways to build and play that deck. His version just happens to be more susceptible to burn.

Only played for about six hours yesterday but I didn't lose this matchup as warrior or win it as mage ever in that period. It's just like old freeze mage versus control warrior, you just armor up and never actually have to pressure them with anything else because they physically can't burn you out and eventually get to a point where even a random 3/3 or something left on the board can solo them.

Quest Warrior with Deathlord, Sludge Belcher and N'Zoth is glorious. Plus, the Direhorn Hatchling is also a Deathrattle!!! :D :D :D

Ice barrier, and it wouldn't have poped the 8 armor as it requires a minion attack, so he would have died to hero power.

He couldn't pick pyro that turn or he died. He only has ice barrier out, which won't save him. Pyro stops him from waygating

If kibler was an idiot and attacked before hero powering, then yeah, that would work. On the other hand, Kibler more often than not avoids such idiotic plays.

He put in 2 Arcana Giant and Alex to win with Time Wrap, but abaddon that half way

the idea is to play a bunch of giants and then use time warp to whack face with them. Alexstrasza + Arcane giant is 16 dmg, enough to kill an opponent who is 15 hp.

Why

Cyan Light he didn't have enough resources to gain armor for it to matter. The longer he took to finish his quest is the longer amaz has to come up with a lethal combo

Having just done it again twice since posting this I remain skeptical. Maybe once the meta stabilizes the mage decks will have settled onto enough damage to consistently overkill heroes over 2-3 turns but so far that does not appear to be the case, it's pretty hard for many of them to even deal 30 damage if you have a taunt up.

My deck has no way outside of my hero power to gain armor. It's not realistic for me to get out of burst range that way, so I'm much better off just pushing for sulfuras.

Well, it did obviously work out here. I wouldn't discount the power of the... uh, hero power though. Rewatching the match, he didn't complete the quest until turn 11. There were a few key turns where you probably wouldn't ever hit the button (axe on two, curator on seven) but that's still a parallel universe in which you gain ~16 armor just from passing before they even turn on most of their burst potential. Then you do have to factor in the alex, but also keep in mind that in that universe you probably didn't throw all those taunts into the doomsayer, meaning there's still more time to tap and stabilize to push above 30. Mathematically I'm fairly certain you also win if you take that line, it just takes much longer and possibly makes for a worse viewing experi... ooooh, ok, I see now. Seriously though, not trying to tell THE Brian Kibler how to play a card game, just trying to add to the collective knowledge as we all figure out how these cards fare against each other. My deck is admittedly a bit more control-oriented (shield blocks and slams, for example) but I still think it's worth trying the "armor, go" strategy out against the mages. Their infinite combo is really clunky against everything else so it seems like a really safe bet they aren't running it, the matchup seems very favorable for a patient warrior.

I think you may have a point if he had more resources for armor than his hero power. With the hero power, he is gaining armor much too slow to counteract with the combo that amaz was building since you are essentially spending 2 mana multiple times to do nothing that effects the board while he may find card draw and damage cards within that time that would make the 4-10 armor you may have gained not matter. As you can see from the video, the only reason amaz thought he was making a risky decision changing his hero power is cause he thought he had cards to gain armor. This was a terrible matchup for Kibler's deck, most times his deck loses against amaz's deck. It was bound to be a close game if he was going to win
