Tickatus did a good job of thinning the deck so kibler could draw primes every turn

Absolutely. Assuming the opponent knew Kibler's deck, he probably figured his best chance of winning would be to burn the Rustwix, but yeah, it backfired in this case.

Welcome to hearthstone. I remember the days of Shudderwock, toggwagle and holy wrath decks. You weren’t beating those unless you had specific counters. It’s literally a normal part of an advanced meta (a meta at the end of a rotation). At least tickatus games aren’t hours long. And even then the tick deck is still more vulnerable to aggro than the past cock blocker decks were.

I get your point about tickatus but I disagree. Had you not drawn Rustwix as the last card before tickatus, it was an instant loss. You mentioned it yourself that your deck is unique and I usually play control warrior and loves it but I have 0% chance to win against Tickatus. Good video nonetheless
@ericbess5917
@ericbess5917 3 года назад
He never said that the deck was auto-win, just that you need to consider how you can win if you are going up against such a deck. Note that Kibler was tapping with lower health than he might have otherwise at that point in the game specifically because he was trying to get the Rustwix before Ticketus came down. I'm unclear what specific "point about tickatus" you disagree with though...you think you shouldn't worry about having a gameplan to beat it? Or just that it a potentially problematic card? I've watched enough Kibler to know that sometimes the gameplay to beat it is just be as aggressive as possible because you have to win before it comes down, so you hope he doesn't have enough removal. One thing I will say is that Kibler knows this game very well...he understands what goes into making certain decks work. For example, a Tickatus deck still needs enough early game to stay competitive, so it has a limited number of cards that can corrupt Tickatus and Kibler makes a comment about when that happened. Incidentally, getting Rustwix before the first Tickatus wasn't absolutely necessary. He still had 2 more draws as long as the Rustwix didn't get burned. Obviously what you are saying is correct if Rustwix does get burned. But Kibler also understand that just because you can beat a deck doesn't mean you always will. You are correct that some cards are particularly good against some matchups. But remember, there are some decks that control warrior basically auto-wins against also. And if you are seeing a lot of Tickatus, you could probably come up with some changes to your deck that would improve your chances against it. At some point, it may be not worth it and your strategy to beat Tickatus is to hope it is the last card in his deck (though this deck apparently ran at least 1 Sense Demons specifically to make sure he draws it....).
@CarpeGuitarrem
@CarpeGuitarrem 3 года назад
Yeah, unfortunately "think about how your deck can beat this card" is a pretty short thought process for some decks that reaches the answer of "you can't". Hearthstone (and Magic) aren't designed so that you have a lot of actual counterplay or adaptation within the game, but I've played other games (Exceed, Codex) where that's actually possible.
@mine5353
@mine5353 3 года назад
Yeah, I appreciate Kibler's advice to stay positive and think 'what's my strategy to win?' - this is just a card game, after all - but I feel he's glossing over the negative play aspects of Tickatus. His Prime deck is, uh, primed for Tickatus: he adds cards back to combat fatigue and they're big threats. If he's lucky/good, he can add more primes than the opponent has removal. That's great! However, for other decks, that's not an option beyond a few tech cards that I think aren't generally very good and don't allow for the recursive shenanigans of multiple Rustwixs. Kibler's opponent had Y'Shaarj on turn 10, which is as fast as possible. Sometimes, the warlock isn't that fast. I think for any slower than aggro deck, the gameplan is obviously to threaten them on board before the game gets to the late stages. However, warlock has tremendous removal plus a limited amount of healing via soul fragments and broodmothers. I find that I just can't stick a board and do enough damage before they burn a portion of my deck and get a big swing turn from Y'Shaarj. I think Tickatus alone is probably fine - not fun to have played against you! - but slow and not that impactful. I think the bigger issue has to got to be Tickatus and Cascading Disaster coming back for free from Y'Shaarj, but I'm not sure how to effectively adjust those cards.
@kluasvt828
@kluasvt828 3 года назад
@@ericbess5917 Thanks for the comment, love your politeness. The problem as a control warrior deck is, that i cant aggro them down, even with rattlegore, cause they have a good amount of pressure themselve and a lot of control. There is no gameplan i can optimize for to beat Tickatus when i lose 10 cards and just fatigues, thats my problem. But i guess you are right. Some matchup are just destined to lose. I have some really good matchups too but not any where i feel it is an auto win as for tickatus. I think the annoying thing about Tickatus for most people is not being allowed to play your deck, losing 5-10 cards. As it is now, he is not a problem. You said it yourself perfectly that he has a limited amount of cards to put in the deck which means that tickatus decks often are lacking against really heavy aggro decks, or, as shown in the video, prime warlock.

@@kluasvt828 Hehe...it is very easy in comments to feel like any post disagreeing with something is "attacking", so I try to be very careful to add enough so that it is clear that this isn't my intent. It good to know that this is coming through :D. Tickatus is clearly very difficult for a control deck to deal with, no question. If it were a strong enough deck that tons of people were playing it, I would say Blizzard should do something about it. But as long as the rock/paper/scissors nature of the game keeps it in check to the point where you don't see it very often, then it may be (read: is) annoying, but it's questionable whether that makes is a "problem" :D.
@legen_ddary

I usually agree with Kibler, but this time I think his opinion on tickatus is kinda wrong. You are not thinking about a way to beat it, you just hope they don't burn your win condition. Like in this game, if he burned Rustwix the game was over, nothing to think about

@ericbess5917
@ericbess5917 3 года назад
More to the point - how many people would have played the Rustwix and gotten the Primes burned off? There is an argument that Kibler made a mistake playing Kanrethad when he did. If he holds that, he's guaranteed 2 Kanrethad Prime instead of just the one (thanks to Vectus - note that he intentionally never played Khartut). It could be argued that he got at least a bit lucky by drawing Rustwix, Kanrethad, and Vectus before Tickatus came down. Regardless, I think it's pretty clear Kibler is talking about building your deck so that it can win against those sorts of things, not so that it is an auto-win. After all, you could just as easily argue that the opponent won't always draw Tickatus (though I guess the Sense Demons with that being the only demon makes the odds of that pretty slim). Ultimately, his point is that you have to adjust how you play to give yourself a chance against whatever deck you are playing.
@SuzakuX
@SuzakuX 3 года назад
Not really, because he knew he needed to try and draw his Kanrethad, Rustwix, Felosophy before turns 7-8. So he tapped and used Demonic Studies a lot. If he hadn't drawn them he'd probably have Plot Twisted. And then when he got some key pieces, he saved them until after the second Tickatus so his Primes couldn't be burned. It's also not like Tickatus comes into play that often, since it's not actually a strong deck that is widely played. It's kind of silly to complain about Tickatus destroying 5 of your cards on turn 7-8 when there are decks that can outright kill you on turn 7.

I have to disagree with Kibler on this one, I don't think Tickatus is a card you have to think and play around. It's a card that in practice removes 1/3 of your deck and acts in a way Blizzard said previously they shouldn't go towards. The old joke of HS being "fun and interactive" is very real here not unlike the old days of Freeze Mage. There is nothing Kibler could have done if he hadn't gotten the cards he needed before 10 were removed from his deck. I don't think Tickatus is a particularly well made or well designed card and I think it only serves to contribute to the RNG BS that HS has become. I'm not a card game veteren like Brian but I feel removing 1/3 of your opponent's deck at random is just bad design.

@@Satherian @Satherian if Tickatus gets corrupted in turn 7, then by the time opponent play their Tickatus on turn 8, you'll only have 19 cards in your deck (if you go first). That's 5 out 19 cards, assuming you don't play any card draw at all, which is uncommon even for hunter class. So yes, by the time opponent play Corrupted Tickatus, it'd probably delete 5/15 cards in your deck. ALSO decks that play Tickatus also probably run at least one way to replay it, most likely Y'Shaarj the Defiler, just like the opponent.

Mill cards add an interesting dynamic to any CCG but the issue with Tickatus is that it's such an extreme amount of milling for almost no cost (you have to play two high cost cards that are both over-statted bombs in a class that has no issues making it to the late game, so you actually need a good reason why you don't want to put this package in your deck rather than the opposite), most classes don't actually have a good way to deal with it and even the ones that do can randomly lose to it anyway since there's no real discard pile interaction meaning that once key cards are gone they're just gone (Plus the awful legendary rules combined with legendary power creep means that most of your important cards are often forced to be one-ofs anyway, so you can't even add basic redundancy to protect against milling). For this specific game it is worth pointing out that Kibler would've actually been in fatigue if he didn't randomly generate additional Kanrethads, only the first two were guaranteed and one of those was burnt. The odds were good that he would get at least one since that's still nine primes with a one in nine chance for any of them to be a Kanrethad, but the point is that it wasn't "figuring out a way to beat Tickatus" so much as rolling the dice and hoping the problem gets solved somehow. That being said I'm not really in favor of a nerf, since any effective nerf would probably involve changing the function of the card entirely and they really need to stop doing that. The best move would probably be to just ban it from standard early like they did with Genn and Baku, but really the format has way more issues right now than just this one card so doing nothing about it at all also seems like a valid approach (since they're unlikely to actually do enough work to really fix anything anyway).

I would say the Jesters Cap comparison isn't quite as apt since it targets 3/60 cards and the card has no other real utility outside of that function, while Tickatus removes 5/30 while also advancing the board state with an 8/8 (it also doesn't target remove, but let's not split hairs). The better comparison might be Ulamog the Ceaseless Hunger. Yes, it's an on attack trigger instead of on cast, and the on cast also removes 2 permanents on the field, but the core of "this card is a big beat stick that eats 1/6th of your opponents deck" is the better comparison. And Ulamog the Ceaseless Hunger sees all kinds of play as a Tron finisher.

Like seriously did they think it was going to OP so they preemptively printed a counter? I love playing C’Thun decks despite how bad they are, and I don’t mind losing. But when I lose because one of my pieces gets burned it’s just a feels bad autoconcede. I’m curious on your thoughts on this Kibler, is it ok for one card to complete negate entire archetypes? I’m always surprised at how disappointed I am when I get Solarian Prime with this deck. It’s risky to play, you can’t tap and play it, and it dilutes your demon pool.

This game was especially satisfying to watch! I really, really hope that Tickatus' effect gets nerfed sooner or later, because usually that card itself ruins all the fun of playing against control warlock. Even with an aggressive deck it's still frustrating many times.

Tickatus is my least favorite card this entire cycle. It’s not a «combo breaker», it’s just «make your opponent kill you within 15 cards». He should be changed to «you and your opponent» instead of just «your opponent».
@ScherFire
@ScherFire 3 года назад
I mean, you *just* watched a game where his opponent didn't have to kill him within 15 cards. Also, it is not a bad design to have cards that punish players for playing very non-proactive strategies.

@@ScherFire if he hadn't drawn rustwix and it'd got burned it'd have been game over. Beating them isn't the problem, it's the fact it can just burn your win con and there's not much you can do

@@jobdoneproductions we're also discussing a game where the opponent had on-curve tickatus, and y'shaarj. Kibler's deck is a bad example because it is SUPER SUPER resistant to tickatus. but saying brian outlucked his opponent when his opponent literally had the nuts is cherry picking the parts of the game.

@@Xohslol tbf it's not easy but with the amount of minion tutoring warlock has (which admittedly worked in both players favour) means it isnt some impossible task. if people think tickatus is unfair or "unfun" they should try playing magic the gathering. probably quit playing the first time they get thoughtseized. hearthstone needs way more forms of interaction, not less. not being able to cast spells on your opponent's turn cuts out a huge amount of interaction you could otherwise get in a card game. they have to compensate for that somehow, or the game ends up being either simple, repetitive, and predictable, or just pure random chaos. i like what they've been doing with cards that remove cards from the opponent's deck, although i'm not a big fan of how the overall gameplay has become so fatigue-centric. maybe hearthstone should have bigger decks, it seems like every other game goes to fatigue nowadays. that would be unfathomable in MTG unless you were playing a dedicated mill deck. and even then you probably die before milling half your opponent's deck in over half your matchups. i also like the cards that force your opponent to cast spells from their hand, the game could use more dirty rat effects in general. but it's really not my preferred kind of disruption. i think they should just add regular old targeted discard spells, full stop. make it exclusively the province of rogue, maybe priest and warlock, and make it cost life or something so that it's extra polarizing. i mean, more than it already is. it should be really good against control and combo decks and really bad against aggro decks. that would help promote a metagame with a diversity of playstyles, rather than the clusterfuck of durdly fatigue decks that ladder has been lately. even the "aggressive" decks have 8-drops and even 10-drops now, which shows that nobody is expecting to win on turn 4 or 5. obviously the opposite situation might feel less fun and more oppressive, e.g. back in the days of face hunter or mech hunter or even aggro/midrange shaman during karazhan. that wasn't much fun either, but historically there's usually been a better balance than there was then or than there is now. back then the game was too fast, now it's too slow. it seems crazy slow to me, although i don't play nearly as much as i used to. i played a lot up until journey to un'goro. i remember people thought whispers of the old gods was a slow meta but it seems crazy fast compared to what hearthstone is now. it makes sense for this to be a slow metagame just like it made sense then, you need to be able to reach turn 10 to play an old god. but it seems like the supporting defensive pieces are too ubiquitous now. every class has insane defensive cards to keep themselves alive, so that every class is capable of running old gods. back in wotog that wasn't the case, there were only a couple classes that could really build a strong deck with an old god in it. and only a few were actual control decks. warrior was basically it, plus yogg druid if you wanna call that a control deck. those were the only ones that saw play in the championship iirc. some people played around with the barnes y'shaarj combo but that was a very different kind of deck than what blizzard seems to have intended for the new old gods. these ones all seem purpose-built for durdly control strategies, with a sort of predetermined game plan rather than original, innovative deck building. i'm not complaining though, i prefer playing durdly decks, it just feels pretty dull when everyone else is playing equally slowly and has like 6 wraths and 15+ points worth of healing in their deck. it's not that the aggro cards suck, because they've been power crept like crazy. it's just that there's no way to get away with playing a real aggro deck now because you're punished way too hard by the board clears that most decks play. and nobody is keeping those slow decks in check, they're allowed to just run away with the metagame because there aren't enough ways to disrupt them. what few ways there are end up being only playable in control decks too, like tickatus. tickatus could have had a more moderating effect on the metagame if it was a 4-drop for example. but it would be way better if there were just 1-3 mana spells that let you disrupt your opponent's hand. something that a more midrange or aggressive deck could use to preemptively counter a control deck's board clear. that would put an actual tax on playing control or combo decks and restore the rock-paper-scissors dynamic that hearthstone used to be well-regarded for

This just shows how stupid tickatus actually is. if rustwix turned up one turn later, Kibler would have just lost the game. I think being able to actively destroy a decent Number of cards of your opponents Deck (twice) just makes the outcome stupidly random.

RNG is not a strategy to beating Tickatus.You SHOULD also realize there are a lot of low level players AND players with not many cards that cannot play against Tickatus.Not too many people can get multiple Envoy's in their decks that are not Warlock.Also Tckatus removes Cthun from being a playable card unlike Tickatus which there is NO answer card for it in the game.Tickatus should have be designed differently and NOT given back to hand for 0 cost.Actually all the 0 cost plays in the game are just flat out bad for the game. HS strategy hope for RNG and play the most broken cards.

I love Tickatus control deck. Not because it is great, but I just like to annoy all the people complaining about a card that is fairly easy to counter. Just keep up the pressure and Tickatus loses on board early on. If Warlock drags you into late in current meta, than you are to blame.
@PhantomDS

Which is why the current meta is face hunter/secret rogue out-aggroing each other. I hate it when the Meta gets like this. There's no thought process in playing decks like those, you just aim for the face and hope the other guy doesn't have AoE or enough defense.

The reason tikatus is not fun is because you had ZERO control over what you drew. You only have one rustwix, one ken, one vex...saying you set up how to play against tikatus is not accurate. Everyone thinks of a plan of what they want to do against a tikatus. It is 100% luck that you drew the cards in the 2/3 of your deck that did not get milled. 90% or more of the time you will be denied one or more of the pieces of a plan you had. That is like saying my plan is to draw my 4 ctuun pieces and then after he double tikatus, I will play my last cthun piece and kill him with cthun. Then he mills a cthun piece. Whoops. Tikatus is not fun because you cannot interact ar all with him and he is a solo card. And you cannot stop the opponent from playing a second one either. Your logic on why tikatus is okay is kind of flawed...
@MrDavidmauck

I do think tikatus is fine though. Just not fun. And having a plan is not a plan against a solo card that is literally built to destroy plans is not a good theory, just cause it worked one time on stream lol

Quite honestly, I think Rustwix is perfectly fine! Mainly because so many decks can get results better then a deck that hopes on rolling Kargath multiple times. Tickatus is something I'm torn on. On the pro nerf side: Yea, it completely stinks losing a huge part of your deck to 3 cards, and yea a 6 mana 8/8 with no downside is just...IDK. On the anti nerf side: I think that raising the Cost kinda kills this card entirely because, you know, Corrupt doesn't really work with high Cost cards, and lowing the amount of cards he burns kinda makes the payoff of playing a weird curve less enjoyable and smooth, and honestly Hearthstone is built on such unstable pillars sometimes that if one card is nerfed then other more frustrating decks take over (i.e. the nerf to Evolve Shaman leading to more popularity for decks like, say, Control Warlock, Res Priest, Tip the Scales Paladin). Honestly you just can't really nerf a card and be done. There are so much side effects to every action Team 5 makes that it could make everything worse then it already was. Hope this helps showing the other side of it!
