It is very unrealistic and very difficult to get into. Things you can somewhat automate are invasions (once you draw up the plan) naval battles and air battles as well as supply chain upgrades with a tiny bit of micro here and there. After you’ve upgraded your spy agency you also don’t need to pay too much attention to them during missions, it is however important to protect yourself from spies as enemy spies massively nerf you against their nation. You can also just use the starting divisions and probably be fine as a major country. All of this is absolutely not advisable in multiplayer or harder difficulty settings or ironman mode unless you want to lose an entire game due to a single mess up from playing unoptimized. After a while you’ll probably go into “autopilot” after you’ve played the same nation a few times. E.g. having preferred generals, division templates, navy, air, construction and politics. The game is essentially hours of buildup in the hopes of having a good war. Probably not very interesting for most people. Also DLC and to a certain extent mods are essential.
