It's UK Sunday! Starting a new BL Drama from the UK!! Reacting to Heartstopper Episode 1 "The Meet" All episodes of Heartstopper season one are now streaming on Netflix.
Enjoyed your reaction! From watching lots of reactions for this show from the UK, I think we Americans are missing some subtle cultural implications. Part of why all Charlie’s friends keep being against rugby is that often rugby culture is “laddish” (dude bro) and heavily homophobic. I also think it was brought up quickly, but some rugby boys from Nick’s year bullied Charlie pretty bad the past year.
Sports and rugby particularly has a very toxic homophobic culture in the UK and Ireland, ESPECIALLY in the context of all boys' schools. Rugby is associated with class privilege as well, unlike soccer, which makes it worse. Nick is a very unusual type of "rugby lad". Even when not actively dickish or homophobic, the culture of rubgy is not one that would feel comfortable for an out gay boy, even now.
Sounds disturbingly like HS American Football. All of what you just said holds a hard truth with that. My baby brother played Football and he was like a different kid with his football friends then other friends.
which is odd because rugby is fundamentally a high-contact sport. Several huge, sweaty men, being in close contact with each other at all times, in often questionable positions kkkk... Not to mention the locker rooms...
Enjoyed your reaction. I really appreciate you actually watching more than a few seconds and taking the time to absorb the significance of what's happening, instead of talking over everything. I would suggest that you go back and watch the "gratuitous" sports section again. There is nothing gratuitous anywhere in Heartstopper. Every single line, every beat, carries meaning or character development. In the montage, you see Charlie go from entering the locker room the first time, to a skeptical if not outright hostile group, to being accepted by that group. "Come on, mate! We got practice!" You see how much courage Charlie has, given how badly he was bullied by some of this same group last year. I couldn't have walked into that locker room after hearing what they were saying about me on the other side of the door. Tao is very protective of Charlie and worried about his interaction with the rugby jocks because last year, they mentally tortured Charlie (this is explained more in the comics). But Charlie is willing to go into the lions' den to be near Nick (which is admirable and worrisome at the same time). We see Charlie go from being an outsider to being one of the team in the squeeze. we see Nick enjoying spending the time with Charlie, and we see, at the end, that Nick is sincerely impressed when Charlie feints and then doges him and makes the score. We see that Charlie has tremendous courage and that Nick is starting to really SEE Charlie. He doesn't yet fully understand what he asked Charlie to do by joining the team...you'll see more awareness in the next episode.
I did notice those things about the montage especially the "we've got practice" - "Don't get hurt" moment with the jocks taking Charlie and Toa calling out to him protectively. I guess I just didn't call it out in the reaction. *:p* but you have to admit it was a pretty long sports training montage... and it does feel like every EVERY BL these days has one.
Thank you so much!! I'm very flattered and happy you're enjoying the content. I hope to see you for the rest of the series. I'm planning to go right into Young Royals as soon as we finish Heart Stopper!
Yes, Form is basically Homeroom. And yes, Ben is a horrible person and Charlie definitely deserves better. I look forward to seeing your next reaction to this show!
Thank you so much for clearing that up. I was very confused, even more so when I heard they were putting different grade levels together. It makes more sense as a homeroom or study hall type class.
Enjoyed your reaction. Hope you continue to give us this content. You should probably edit out most of the music and obscure the full view of the screen or cut a lot more because orherwise you are risking copyright strikes. I've seen lots of reactions taken down because of this.
Thank you for your comment! It has definitely been a learning curve on what is and is not acceptable but we think we have cracked the code. As long as we are removing the copyrighted music Netflix has been approving our videos.
Thanks for your upload! Though i might be concerned, cause I believe you didn’t edit your reaction. So because of copyrights this might get deleted by RU-vid eventually…. 🤷🏽♀️
i love your reaction ! i don't know if you read the Books but, Charlie is 15 years old like Tao and Isaac. And Nick is 16 years old like Tara, Darcy, Elle and Nicks Friends. Also Charlie suffers eating problems and depression. You can notice when he's "eating", but he doesn't really eat. Charlie's relationship with his mom is not one of the best but but he is very close with his sister and they trust each other a lot. The teacher was a Big support when Charlie got bullying specially from some of the rugby boys
@@angeltalion It is based on a graphic novel. The first season is based on the 1st and 2nd volume. But i' won't say more cause i could spoil it for you.
I'm the WORST about spoilers! My BIL says I should come with a spoiler warning! LOL I'm doing everything not to search out anything on HS because I don't want to dilute my reaction.... but it's SO hard.
As I said previously, it's the abriviation for 'Boys Love' internationaly while GL is 'Girls Love' rather than calling it 'gay' or 'lesbian' I use it as well because it really is habit. I'm sorry if it triggers you. I will try to be more aware of my use of it. I'm sure you aren't the only one uncomfortable and/or triggered by it.
Ummm, sorry but a lot of this is basically just **narrating**, not reacting. For example, you didn't even acknowledge the high point of the episode, when Nick yanked Ben off Charlie. Ehh?
@@angeltalion Thanks, I'm really looking forward. It's worth noting that probably 99% of your viewers are hardcore Heartstopper addicts. We know the timing of every iconic moment (there are dozens) and every bit of precious dialog, and are shamelessly desperate to see your reactions to each! And that means it's very sad if you happen to miss one. Carry on.
