I’ve thought about the access to the cam gears that way. Welding 3 small tabs across the top to try and pinch them somewhat together with a gasket of some sort between the two.. (though I’ve never cut one open because I thought the covers were magnesium & to see the actual thickness of the material to potentially create a seat for a custom gasket)

I think that an engine must be designed arround the cam...the cam Will give the form of the engine, like the turbo size , inlet and exhaust manifold selection.
Not sure you do always really lose out with LS cams as some of the stock stuff is so horrifically under cammed that there are gains to be had literally everywhere. The point you make is bang on though, if a bit more cam is good then surely a lot more must be better right? Erm no, not if you value drivability, emissions & fuel economy plus durability of your valvetrain!
