I like Martin Scorcese's gangster films but Heat [Michael Mann] has a very slow, intense, realistic delivery that is just awesome. This movie is timeless.
Jon Voight was awesome in this film. Even though his scenes were limited, his chemistry with De Niro was great. His dialogue and delivery was smooth as hell
I'm all for it but the movie is perfect as it is. The scene with Trejo and Ana seems out of place, or at least I dont wanna believe Trejo sold the boys out.
We're in the R worded era of hero movies geared towards children and man children. We can ride this out just like we did the cowboy craze(still wasnt as bad as the modern CGI vomit)
@Paul Blackman Those kinds of robberies wouldn't have really happened in the 90s, either. The kinds of heists where criminal gangs smash over armoured trucks and drill through the floors of banks, you only really see in countries like Brazil. Mann was basing his characters off 1960s figures. But the story and how it's delivered, is timeless. I wouldn't focus too much on the technology.
I'm an editor. Worked in Hollywood for 7 years, been doing it for 17. The hardest thing to learn when I first started out was not what to keep in, but what to cut. It's instinctive in the beginning to fall in love with certain edits/cuts, and not want to let them go... but you HAVE to. This was really interesting to watch.
Storytelling for the screen is definitely more about cutting everything right down to the core elements. But I freely admit, it would've been cool to have a LITTLE more information in the theatrical version. Some of these scenes set up payoffs pretty darn well, and barely took 6-12 seconds.
paul simons I know right. in the original I get the impression they beat it out of him and felt bad for him. Toad lol. I went to flicks to watch this when first came out, Pacino and de niro in same film was a must . (Godfather 2 doesn't count lol!! I Just realised Ludacriss, Dreyfuss and Huff and the cop from Sister Act are in it too. Well it was 23 years ago now OMG!!
'I am double the worst trouble you have ever had.' Both Mcneil and Hanna are shown as characters that say very little, very simple sentences and mean what they say. No nonsense talk. very good plays.
Amazes me how people can sit through 4 hrs of a dumbf*ck sporting event but if a movie goes over 2 hrs it's too long.. This movie could have been 6 hrs long and it still wouldn't have been enough as it was that good..
Why make your film longer when cutting it makes it twice as concise and therefore twice as gripping? Don't assume these decisions, especially when made by a superb film maker like Mann, are made only because they think the audience may need to get home early. From what I see, the cuts seen here make sense. The clip of Neil and Eady in the car for example. There is no new information being shown there. We have already seen her give him the cold shoulder, we already know how she feels. That's why those decisions are made by a guy like Mann.
Oh baby. I love this movie because neil McCauley is a genius in robbery and vince is a genius in his investigation. Its like two boxers competing for a built at the end one man stays standing. But yea McCauley was my favorite person and his crew are my favorite. I wanted them to keep stealing without any killing and quick entries and exits like a true robber
Yeah.. He could have easily flown away with the lady of his life to a peaceful sunset.. But, once he knew where the bastard was his value systems just knew that his crew deserved their revenge and he should be the one to do it. Ppl might think he should have resisted the urge for revenge n walked away. But that would have been unfair for the crew members who lost their lives and too selfish an act for Neil.
I don’t understand why critics don’t put this film next to Goodfellas and The Godfather as the greatest film of all time. the cinematography throughout is just gorgeous
I couldn't agree more. At the end, you wanted both McCauley and Hanna to achieve their objectives. But how? If I ever met Mann, I'd ask him, "Did Neil hesitate?" I'd love to hear his answer.
this is cool to see, HUGE shoutout to the editor because these scenes were not necessary. i LOVE the movie and i actually thought it should've been shorter tbh
I can see why all of these were cut. Heat is a masterpiece and if it had these scenes it wouldn't be. A masterpiece is when something is perfect and needs nothing either added nor taken away.
Trejo was able to explain they had Anna and it was Waingro just before Neil killed him. It's difficult to hear but he made sure Neil knew he had no choice. The deleted scene didn't add much for me. Glad they left it out.
true, it kind of downplays the tragedy of it. Like its a very standard, show up and big muscly mafia guys with bats are at your house asking you casually about stuff they want to know. Its like something out of Licence To Kill or any mafia film, didn't fit with the rest of how great Heat was I think, especially because removing this scene leaves it to the imagination what happened which makes it much sadder.
Yesss, someone who gets it. I think Sam and Dan Houser said they wanted to be filmmakers before they started making videogames, but Michael Mann is one of their biggest inspirations. Along with Walter Hill's The Warriors (Which is why almost every gang has an outfit in the older games) hell if you actually look at it, it seems they built the GTA games to be set in The Warriors universe. Another movie Director they love to reference is William Friedkin, the Director who made The Exorcist. He made The French Connection, and To Live and Die in LA. GTA 4 has two missions, one where you chase a train in a car like in The French Connection, and To Live and Die in Aldernay being another mission. They also made the achievement To Live In Die In Los Santos when you beat GTA 5. Friedkin's To Live and Die In LA was called a Miami Vice rip off but he actually says he didn't mean to rip off Michael Mann, and they're actually friends, and not only that but Tangerine Dream first worked with Friedkin, who then worked in Mann on Thief, who finally worked with Rockstar Games for GTA 5 (They made the soundtrack which is why that one has the chase music I believe) GTA is like a movie-buff's love letter to other movie-buffs. I don't think I'd love movies as much without the GTA series and I don't think I'd love the GTA series as much without the movie references.
Miami Vice and Scarface were basis for Vice City. and San Andreas, 4 and 5 has a taken a lot of inspirations from Heat. (hell there's a mission in GTA 5 called "Blitz" which is literally a copy of Heat's opening lol)
I think the only scene that could have stayed was the one between Neil and Nate. It showed that Neil had a heart and was loyal - it also showed the trust and history he had with Hate. Everybody NEEDS a Nate in their life. "Me and you go way back kiddo. I bought you the best, nothing less!"
@@MultiLiverpool1 The Tom Sizemore scenes add something - It shows how he is a thrillseeker who is able to compartmentalise his family life, mirroring how he later uses a girl for a human shield. If it stayed in the film, it contrasts with Hanna and McCauly - the former whose personal life is a mess which he uses work as an escape from, and the latter who has no personal life but his work. Removing this Jeremy Piven scene takes something away from the film - When you watch it, McCauly tells him to take his shirt off and Piven puts on a weird expression. It feels like something is missing, and it's this scene. I personally think it's also badass, because McCauly isn't issuing an overt threat, but stating that he's an obsessive psycho, as a matter of fact. The scene circling the bank doesn't really add anything to the story, but it rounds out Dennis Haysbert's character, Breedon, and his situational confidence as a professional getaway driver. The scene between DeNiro and Jon Voight shows that Breedon's widow will be financially supported. The scene in the car with McCauly and Eady absolutely adds something - It shows the journey of his character, as he learns to care about others on a human level. Without it, his inner 'transformation' isn't so clear.
My thought was always that Trejo really couldn't shake off the cops, he ended up going home where he was ambushed, and then got tortured for the information. Which led to the cops being tipped off. In this deleted scene, Trejo actually has a chance to warn Neil. It's too out of character to not warn him. Trejo was smart enough to know Waingro was a maniac by that point. He was also aware Van Zant wanted to kill them. In my opinion, he would've told Neil right then and there, then Neil and the crew would've come over and helped kill Waingro. There's just no way Trejo wouldn't at least warn them. I know he was afraid they would harm Anna, but there was no guarantee that wouldn't happen anyway. Plus Trejo had a better shot if he had his crew with him. There was no way for Van Zant and Waingro to check if the robbery was happening before Trejo and the crew got back to the house to save Anna. So glad that was cut out. Most of these scenes are better not being in the movie. It just goes to show how spot on that editing was.
A masterpiece! For me, Heat and Thief, both Michael Mann pictures, are the top of the line in their genre - Heat really got robbed not getting the Oscar!
The scene cruising by the bank as the alarms click off should have been kept. Adds to the high tech professionalism of the crew. Other scenes(home life) could have been cut to make room. Just my 20/20 hindsight.
*HEAT* *IS THE MOST UNDERRATED MOVIE OF ALL TIME* *FOR ALL OF US WHO HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING THIS PICTURE, SOME OF US A DOZEN TIMES OR MORE, WE ARE PART OF A SPECIAL GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY IN THIS FILM* *HEAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHOWERED WITH OSCARS AND GOLDEN GLOBES, AND THIS FILM SHOULD BE IN THE CONGRESSIONAL FILM REGISTRY FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION, AS WELL THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE*
Breeden really slid into his role easily. Love the little smile he give when Michael say there no cop reaction time since they cut the alarm system off. He thinking Neil always runs a professional grew. Why didn't Trejo tell Neil that Waingro was holding his wife hostage. He erroneously thought he'd save his life and his wife if he sold out Neil. Despite this betrayal, Neil was still was going to call a medic to help Trejo when Trejo refused him and ask him to mercy kill him, knowing his wife was already dead.
I'm glad they removed these scenes. They're not bad but I feel each of them hurts the pacing of the movie. And the Waingro-Trejo one gives away half the plot early. Yeah, you got the sense that something was off but you didn't know for certain what Trejo did or that Waingro was the one who made him. Besides, I feel it was better as a background event than an onscreen one.
Understand why they were cut but it's nice to see how they fill in a lot of what we saw in the film... We knew what happened in the original and these play out pretty much exactly how we thought they would....thanks for the upload!!
The only weird part about the deleted scenes is why Trejo wasn't armed after he calls and lies to Neil about being tailed. He would have known that Waingro was up to no good and would be ready to take down or go down fighting, yet he just rolls up back home and acts like he finished a simple chore and asks for his woman. LOL
Fun fact: Heat had not one but TWO actors who played the main "Hannibal Lecter" universe villains: Francis Dolarhyde AKA "The Red Dragon" was played by Tom Noonan [Manhunter]and Jame Gumb AKA "Buffalo Bill" [Silence of the Lambs] played by Frank Theodore Levine. Two of the scariest performances in movie history.
Thanks so much for posting this. I saw Heat in the theater when it came out, still one of my favorite movies. I've never seen any of these deleted scenes. Thanks again!
That's a terrific decision to remove all these deleted scenes. Some conversations makes the characters like a preacher or pressing down another partner. Trejo's scene is not on-par cinematic acting with the whole atmosphere in the movie. We are so lucky all the street shoot out scenes are not removed at all. That's what i cared the most.
I don't think the transponder added anything important. It might've broken Mann's desired rhythm. Trejo was a good scene for a regular movie. In this one, though, I think it was better for us to imagine what happened to him. Plus, the scene shows him darting out of the room. that detracts from his gutsy character, who we later see apparently stood up under the torture and gave 'em nothing, plus had the pride to "go out" with a bullet instead of slowly or in a police hospital room. My thoughts, anyway.
KutWrite stood up under the torture and gave em nothing are you watching the same film? He gave them the time and location of the bank job before they'd laid a glove on him or Anna who he thought was safe until he came back from lying to Neil on the phone about Fed's being all over him !
Steve He had a funny behind-the-scenes story about the fight between him and Al Pacino. Before the shoot, he told Al something like, You see this face? Don't hold back LOL
@@apurugganan Ohhh that's why Al really claws his face violently. So effective. Rollins has some very interesting stories, and his dedication to the movies he makes is a dream for most filmmakers. Eric The Pilot is a personal favorite of mine that could be turned into a feature length or 40 minute short
As much as I hate a racist, Rollings did great on Sons of Anarchy. And my favorite all Rollings is The Chase with Charlie Sheen. Great actor who has evolved and has great comedic timing.
This is awesome, thank you! This movie is in my top 5 favorite films, true epic. 1:15 - A scene they should have kept in. Taking of Anna, it explains in much more detail why Trejo bailed.
Litteraly every scene with a human factor was cut out, and I can't believe I didn't remember having seen these and how much of an insight through both side's peronal life they offer. Many of us wish this magnificent movie never ended so a longer cut would have just been AWESOME.
Neil broke his own rule,he spotted the heat when he goes after Waingro ,when he enters the hotel he spots a shotgun so he should have left it even though Waingro was a piece of shit. He could have got Nate to sort Waingro . Plus they should have left the scene with Trejo in . And the way to rob the bank should have being put in
Neil couldn't do that because of all the trouble Waingro caused his crew which were like his family. It would have ate up at him had he not killed Waingrow. An he walked away from his girlfriend after he saw Vincent out there, he walked away from her ( thus he didn't get so attached to her that he was willing to go to prison for her, he'd rather die, and that's what he did ). It sucked seeing him get killed but than you wouldn't really have a story if the ending had not been tragic.
When Michael Mann is on form he is untouchable. I love this movie - absolute classic. It's one the only two movies that ever made me want to visit LA. The other is Collateral funnily enough.
Let’s hope they FINALLY release the Directors Cut version! ALL these clips should have been in the final version, they help the overall flow of the whole entity!
Great exposition, too bad some of these scenes didn't make it to the final cut. We learn how Trejo was forced to betray the team, and you get to know the agents a little bit more.
still dont understand.. that nazi guy and the latino one?! he goes to his home and finds them there - why?? the nazi told the cops it was going down? sorry im kind of dumbass just wnt to understand.....love the movie :)
Van Zant's mooks were tipped off, and Trejo was the weak link. They were waiting for him at his house, as well as the "nazi guy" (Waingro). Waingro didn't toot to the cops, he went straight away to the guy that was robbed in the first place (Van Zant). Dude, check the synopsis at IMDB, it sums it up nicely.
Tom Sizemore's character (Michael Chirito) would've benefited from one scene giving him a bit more character development. Still, 'Heat' remains one of the best---and most underrated---films ever made. As far as the genre goes... Heat > The Departed > Casino > Goodfellas
I remember thinking Tom Sizemore had his role and character cut the most. In the theatrical cut he’s kept very enigmatic. These scenes flesh him out more but ultimately right that they kept the focus on De Niro and Kilmer. Don’t necessarily think these were all cut for time as Mann has had opportunities to put these back in and hasn’t so suspect this is more for pacing and structural reasons.
great decision cutting these scenes out. great editing. these scenes gives too much information and unnecessary explanations by the characters about the incidents. its always better to let some stuff unsaid and give challange to viewers to decipher the background incidents.
Thanks to whoever posted this. These scenes finally help me answer so many questions about this movie that I love. This is a great flick but there were some things that I could never figure out in the final cut . This makes it a bit more clear. Always suspected something going on between Trejo and the other crew but they don't explain it in the movie enough!
"Youre wrong, its 4 times the risk cause if sumthin happens to him, im comin for you & I'm double the wrose trouble you ever had." **drops mic thru the floor**
