Ever wondered how hot metal raised garden beds get? Would a cement bed do better? What about a grass lawn? Is a lawn alternative going to be cooler? Those heat tests... plus more!

Might be interesting to revisit this at 0700 in January to see the differences in heat retention.

I used to do this activity with my middle school students before I retired. The students always found the results interesting. We would also take the temperature of the air close to the ground and above the ground..

I did this as a middle school science experiment! Asphalt compared to our concrete driveway, wood walk way, and the grass lawn. The Asphalt was so much hotter than everything else. Really showed how much lower in temperature a grass lawn was.

I have always heard about the temperature differences, but never saw it. This was a good video and, to me, a unique topic. I will be watching this again, and comparing it to my many growing spaces because this Summer was tough for me. I have a lot of figuring out to do. Florida, Zone 10

Hello from Puerto Rico. Here in San Juan, there are still many older neighborhoods built in the 30's-60's and many of those houses had overhang roofs all around (a carryover still from Spanish colonial days before the US one?) - in effect giving the property the same 'cooling' effect as trees would. Nowadays, people that purchased those homes have just made new outer walls at the edge of the overhangs to get more interior space - at the cost of higher a/c cooling bills I'm sure... Build for your climate people!!!

Yes! I hate that the new homes have such shallow eaves on the houses. Definitely causing homeowners to spend way more on AC, then if the houses were to designed properly.

I've been going back and forth with my wife for years about getting trees around the house. And I never one thought about putting them up just to shade the house to reduce the $400/month electric bill in the summer! Guess it's time to go shopping!

I wonder if the temperatures vary depending on how far from the edge of the raised beds it is measured. Probably most variance in metal beds - center of beds vs near walls.

One small thing, urban heat islands are more caused by greenhouse gasses concentrated in urban areas than black body radiators. Yes in the day time asphalt etc will be much hotter, but at night they are much cooler. However, the greenhouse gasses trap that heat, otherwise it would radiate off.

I love this! Also fellow tree/plant nerd found this super interesting now I want a thermometer like that. Though I do have a temp gun that is SUPER fun lol. Maybe do a video about trees / shrub trees that are native. See soooooo many people planting horribly invasive trees and shrubs

We have become obsessed on using Frogfruit as a ground cover for parts of our lawn, but cannot find it at any local nursery. We live near St. Augustine Florida. Should we try to order seeds from somewhere, or maybe get some plants shipped to us? Do you have any suggestions on where we could order from?

@@WildFloridian I love our state. Not everything will do well but what does live thrives. I think our state rose from the ocean like 600000 years ago so relatively young. Then hurricanes shaped us. I'm from Clearwater but live in Crystal River and I started a small garden because I tried Everglades tomatoes and love them. They grow well so are the sweet potatoes and okra. Life has been cruel and I don't drink or take drugs so I escape by putting my pinkies into the soil. I'm trying to do this organically. I just happy so far everything has sprouted. If I get any harvest I'll call it a bonus. I enjoy your videos. I watch other gardeners but mostly floridians. Tempest adest Floridum. Thank you ma'am

I'm asking several gardening channel content creators for their opinion on this. I'm in central Florida 9b, almost all of my tomato plants are dropping their flowers. They're about 4-5' tall. Should I remove them or try to keep them alive until it cools off? I don't want to keep fertilizing them if they aren't going to keep their flowers and produce tomatoes for me. What is your gardening option? Thanks. Also, very interesting information in this video.
@theresarobinson1367
@theresarobinson1367 Месяц назад
I’m not the content creator, but live in 10B in FL. Last year I tried and tried to grow through the summer and didn’t have much luck. I tried several types of tomatoes which were mostly bought from BBS so they were well started. I.finally found some which were labeled as heat hardy. They did well after they were established in my raised bed garden, but really took off later in the summer- September and into October. They and the other varieties all did well into the ‘winter’. This year my garden is taking a break until I can stand the weather too!

@@theresarobinson1367 thanks. That's my plan. It's time to order more tomato seeds so I'll be looking for heat tolerant and disease resistant

The long leaf pine used to cover about 60% of the state with clear understory; there were very few palmettos . Your planter is probably made of concrete not cement, cement is one of the materials used to make concrete. Shame on you, an engineer should know that. Go Gators
