The microstructure, properties, and performance of additively manufactured metallic parts depend on the grain structure, phase composition, and defects, which are affected by heat transfer and liquid metal flow. Physics-based models of heat transfer in additive manufacturing can provide transient temperature fields, fusion zone geometry, cooling rates, solidification parameters, and defects in parts, which are needed to understand their microstructure, properties, and performance. Here we discuss how heat transfer calculations are done using simple and elegant heat conduction models in part scale and review the limitations of these calculations. Finally, we examine how these limitations are overcome in models that consider the flow of liquid metal in the molten pool.
