I worked in the Oaxaca Valley at the Monastery Cuilapan Laboratory and the Archaeologist said we find this Quartz but we can't find the source and I said that is because it has been heat treated and he said, They heat treated Quartz? and I said sure they heat treated Quartz. It is what we called cold cream jar Quartz which is what he had.

Thanks . I'm in the ouachitas . Just learning . Going to try heating some novaculite from the Hot Springs area .native mines all over down here . I found an arrowhead on my land and some cutting tools , So I've just really been curiouse . As a carpenter , I think I can make me some keepsakes .

I have a house in Mt. Ida and I'm in the area pretty regularly. Novaculite is tricky to heat treat. You can buy it heat treated from Dan's Whetstones in Malvern great quality.

Does heat treating help prvent step fractures or is that more a bad hit on stone

It would help the rock to flake better if it was heat treated. Could be platform preparation or selection. Could be angle and force of strike as well.

It varies a lot depending on where you are in the country. I'd recommend checking out some geological maps of your area.
