Not sure how to track this, but I'm curious about how many of us have watched this from the beginning, as I have. Bet there's a whole big bunch of us who have "Yay!"-ed and followed every new clip. You guys have done such an awesome job from start to now. Your coverage, filming, editing are just a treat. Have you considered putting in a well. Even if the flow rate was slow it would augment you capacity and a windmill pump wouldn’t put a strain on your solar. You’d be harvesting wind power to provide water.
@teevis3620
@teevis3620 Год назад
I thought the same thing. It could double as a well pump and drive an auxiliary electric generator where the power flow could be dedicated and adjusted to flow to 1,2,3 or more household applications and/or with the peak flow to take care of the AC running at anytime during a 24hour period. Doing a great job guys.. ...yikes, mutant snakes.

A couple of suggestion for the problems you are having. 1). Build a storm shelter and put your batteries down there. After all you live in Texas you might need one and the cool constant temperature below ground will be the same in Summer and winter. Great for the batteries. 2) Add Wind power you might not get much power on those hot stagnant nights but during the nights were you might have some wind you can get a little power boost during the night. 3) Water? Can you have a well? What about taking water from the pond in front of the house? At least during emergency situations? Good luck to you!

We do our errands after the sun sets. Tired of being stuck indoors, but I'm an old lady now..lol. We need rain desperately too. Lake Mead has dried up as well as Lake Powell. Now the Colorado river is drying up, Nevada, California, Arizona & Colorado depend on these systems for water, so water restrictions are coming, can't wait as we are a family of 7. glad to see yall are finally fencing up the crawl space and will keep snakes out. one extra tip in case you all have not done already is to take some extra of the screen material used for the skirting and secure the screen material over top of the vent stacks on the roof for the plumbing. Reason is snakes can and will crawl into the vent stacks and get into your plumbing and come up through bathtub, etc. I don't recall off the top of my head where you all had the stacks but I am guessing you probably have 2-3 up there. keep it up, y'all are doing a great job. and yes write a book about how solar/electric conversion is not for everyone, it would be impossible for 350MM of us in the US to make this conversion. too expensive, too much space needed, too much maintenance and batteries are already scarce. You all are doing an honorable job, but more importantly showing just how difficult it really is to complete. blessings to all of you.

When I lived in Texas long time ago, one of the best things in one story houses was the Attic fan. It was usually in the hall of bedrooms. open the windows and it sucks the wind through the house. Even if the air is hot it is air moving. On normal warm days it is enough so can save on airco. Another was the water-cooler in the window.. really nice at night. Also covering your outside airco so does not get direct sun but does get air will save it from working harder. Growing more bushes against house also cools down the house. growing with your home. Love it.

I've been living off-grid for the past 11 years. I've had to upgrade my solar system severely to accommodate my needs. I finally drilled a deep well 600ft and due to 7gpm I also had to bury a 2500gal storage tank to pump water into. This necessitated the installation of jet pump to pump water into a pressure tank to give me 24/7 water. I have a dual electric/propane water heater, electric refrigerator and deep freezer. Batteries are the biggest piece of an off-grid solar system. I purchased Toshiba LTO SCIB batteries from a junk yard from two Honda Fit EV wrecked vehicles for $4K that give me 44kW of battery bank storage. I can run my place for almost 5 days and nights without any sunshine however, I have a propane generator attached to my system that can recharge the batteries to full charge in 6 hours. I wouldn't think that you need to go very deep for a well with all the surface water around your property and you now can get almost the same amount of battery storage I have by purchasing server rack batteries for less than $1,500 per 5kW of storage for Lipo4 batteries, which are safe batteries. I don't know what you are currently using but, I think that you can integrate your existing batteries with the new ones.

As far as dealing with the heat....We moved from the upper midwest to SoCal. In the summer, we have daily temps above 100. It took a long time to adjust to the heat as well as the lack of humidity. What seemed to help was gradually increasing the temp. on the thermostat. A degree increase a week. What used to be comfortable 72 degrees is now freezing! Our thermostat is set at 80 and we are used to that. Love you videos.

You guys are great!! Way to go sticking with the house build!!! I’m sure others have asked but if the house skirt waited all this time, why not wait, even a week or two for when the weather starts to cool off? A non-heat wave time. Especially that there’s not much left. Heck do it in the early fall !

Put the AC on a timer to shut off at 2am. You're sleeping and you really can be warmer while you are all unconscious. It's a myth that cooling off after warming up takes more energy. It actually takes the exact same amount as 24-hour climate control. 'Kenz', you nailed it, "it's not good to keep draining the batteries down to zero." I hope this energy-saving (and battery saving) tip helps, cheers!

Oversize or diversify. Burn wood for heat in winter (you have lots of wood around), build a ground water well, technical not a big problem, to filter it to drinking water. Plant trees for shadow (chestnuts, or other drought-resistant trees). Hugs from sunny and dry Germany 🙂

It’s amazing how you guys live off the grid. I was thinking isn’t it possible for you guys to have a borehole water system which naturally comes from the ground, and with a water pump and electricity it will be able to assist you guys when there is no rain especially in summer. Many farmers, households, and ranches use it. It just a suggestion maybe you guys can look into it. I love all the videos keep them coming. Well done guys!👏🏽👏🏽👍👍

You guys should really check your comments sections. 😉Back when yall were installing the mini splits, I commented on you having 3 separate 20amp outdoor condensers would put too much load on the electrical. 3 condensers means 3 separate motors to turn 3 compressors full of freon. That's triple the A/C load on a house that's less than 1000sqft. A simple 3 ton 3 zone 12k x 12k x 12k mini split with single condenser (placed on the east side of the house away from the evening sun + lengthening the lines if needed) would have frozen you guys in that little house. I have a 2.5 ton 3 zone on my 800sqft house for 8yrs in west Texas. The only reason to have separate units like that is if you want to totally cool and heat separate areas of the home simultaneously. Edit: Spenser, would love to know what your current draw is on those 3 units at night with all the lights out? Could you report that to us?

I'm sure there will be more struggles along the way but I know you will get through them as always. You have been an inspiration to many and for that I thank you both. I knew that the time would come when the house would be finished but a part of me wished it would last forever because I so enjoyed watching your lives unfold. We're in the same boat with the AC. We just turn off the AC around an hour after dusk and crank the fans. It really isn't that bad overall but we're looking forward to fall for sure. We've also had to bring in water for our rain water system. I think four times at 550-gallons each time. Hopefully will have the backup well working soon. Then we'll be good to go on water.

@@buslifewithmel7934 Just curious as to why off gridders refuse to use grid power even when they have access to it on their property? No shame in going with a grid tied system. Since the net power usage from the grid would still be zero. But they wouldn't have issues on cloudy days or when the batteries run down. Building a a fully off grid solar power system to cover all situations is extremely expensive.

Y’all definitely have the “handy” gene and tons of homework and hardwork. Reconsider a water well. Start rubbing your nickels together for new batteries. Make a wildfire plan. Maybe cool the house down pretty cool during the day while you have the excess power.

As soon as you are able, dig a well for water. I would also suggest another source for heat, fireplace or wood burning stove. Weather is becoming an issue worldwide, as is water. YOU NEED BACKUPS! This winter is supposed to be a really cold one, so prepare now. Dig a well in the spring, use your tractor, but first get another source for heat for winter, it's coming on fast. You have plenty of firewood from the tree you had to cut down, use it. At 70 years I've learned to be prepared, as much as possible.

When we lived in shipping container whilst building our home we ended up putting a huge skillion roof over our containers. It reduced the heat buy about 5c in summer and stopped condensation in the winter. Also enormously increased our water catchment area which kept our 3 small tanks full (1321 gallons) & our 28,000 gallon tank half filled.

Yeah you need to replace the Tesla batts with LFP rack mounts and they have BMSs built in just plug and play. You can let them go down further than the Tesla NMC batts. Solar plenty like you said. Also stop flushing toilets with drinking water! Setup a compost toilet during drought times. I recommend a Separette or CHead. Good work you all! Keep it up.
