Cold water sinks and hot water rises. If your thermometer is hanging low it is in the colder water. In any case it would take more coverage, and several days to get 10 degrees of change, and that is without your pool being shaded by trees.
@led1002
@led1002 13 дней назад
The problem with your pool is that it has too much shade. We have the same problem. When the pool was installed 30+ years ago it would heat quickly in the spring. Now that the surrounding trees have grown and shade the pool with partial shade it always seems cold.

Best way for a cheap solar heater is to use a 3/4 hose bib on your plumbing after the pump and filter and run a black garden hose out onto your roof or a shed roof. Or around the deck. Where ever you have sun all the time... Obviously run the other end back into the pool. Ive seen people use an old vaccum line to return it back to the pool but you can do it basically anywhere. Make a little fountain back into the pool if you want

I'm in Arizona and I've used the full surface bubble-wrap style pool covers in the past. You can leave them full (rectangular) size and put something on the deck to hold the extra part down (wind). This works well it you have leaves or other stuff blowing into the pool. --OR-- If your yard is free of that kinda crap you can trim it so it fits the shape of your pool and it touches the water surface completely. The trimmed up version seemed to outlast the non-trimmed one since I guess the water keeps the sun from baking the bubble wrap and disintegrating it. The drawback is if stuff DOES blow onto the thing, the wind will get it to the edge and it will get into the pool sooner or later. TRADEOFFS! So the bottom line here in AZ is you can extend your pool season by a month or two on each end. With kids it's worth it, but now that my kids are grown and out I don't bother. On another point, even with the hot-ass AZ sun and a full pool cover it takes several days to make a notable change in water temp. So floating those little thingies won't do shit. Not even here in Phoenix! So yeah, those people are full of shit. Just my humble ass opinion of course. ;-) Not endorsing here at all, but here's an example of a trimmed install. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dTINFWo3h-o.html

As you said, the way these work is to trap in heat and prevent it from escaping. To do such you’d need to make enough of the Lilly pads to cover the entire water surface of the pool. The larger the gap, the more heat that will be lost. Even if they did actually HEAT the water, the equivalent of what you did was to put a candle under a 60 quart pot of water and expect the water at the top of the pot to be boiling after 45 min. Try it again with a kiddie pool and Lilly pad that covers the entire water surface. Check it again in 24 hours and you’ll see the temp has gone up.

Uh, pool owner here. I remember when this post made its rounds on Facebook. I thought it was ridiculous then. It's still ridiculous. QUICKLY heat up the pool with just 3 of those cheap things? Get outta here with that. If you wanna warm your pool like that it's gonna take some time, and use a REAL solar cover to get it done. Shooting the temperature gun on a black surface exposed to the sun is obviously going to show warmer temperatures. After a few days with the solar cover on, and the first about 6 in of the water is warmed up. That won't enhance anybody's swimming experience. Those little lily pads aren't going to do Jack squat 😂

I am a pool technician in Florida. I am getting ready to start producing content to refute the misinformation out there about pool cleaning and equipment and to set the record straight about the "tips and tricks" you see out there regarding pools and spas. The pool blankets do not heat. They are intended for overnight use, ONLY WHEN YOU ARE HEATING THE POOL, and are intended to be taken off during the day because leaving them on too long can result in algae as well as decreasing the life span of the blanket due to the eventual dry rot caused by the sun. Your water has a very delicate chemistry balance and part of that balance is the water's exposure to sunlight. Heaters also vary in ability and cost effectiveness. The primary pool heaters are gas and electric. Electric can be cheaper than gas depending on the region you are in, and gas is the quickest type of heater from my experience in this field. Solar panels are also an option, however the time of year can change how effective they are, and generally they are better used in tandem with another heater type. It is best to run your primary heater to raise the entire temperature, and then turn on your solar panels to aid in maintaining the heat level in your pool. This is easiest done with a modernized automation system with temperature computers, sensors and motorized valves able to activate and deactivate heaters depending on the heating demand. Alternatively, you can monitor the heat via thermometers and change the valves accordingly as time goes on. This will decrease the cost of heating, though given the amount of work that goes into manually alternating heaters most of our customers with standard systems opt to run one heater at a time and accept the additional cost as a luxury expense.

Most interesting way I've seen someone heat their pool is to put a pipe (inflow) at the halfway point (between the shallowest part of the pool and the deepest part). The water is pumped from there and the pipe passes through their outdoor fireplace and back down into the pool at the deepest point of the pool (outflow). Still takes ages to heat the pool but it does work. They also installed a split system on the section of pipe that returns to the pool after the fireplace, that they can turn on/off. They use the same method to heat the water in their outdoor spa.

We have a large black plastic that covers the entire above ground pool, even the sides. This serves to block anything that would get in the pool, it protects the chlorine from UV rays when not in use, provides a heat source aswell and retains heat at night. Yesterday the temperature at 8pm was around 86°F/30°C. The surface temperature reaches above 90° Farenheit, which then gets mixed every time the pump runs.
@JasonECI
@JasonECI 3 года назад
By floating it on surface, the heat dissipates to air even if it did absorb some from solar. Sinking it into bottom of pool might improve a little, but not expecting too much unless you paint the whole pool black... get a cooking pot of water under the sun to see how much warmer it gets.

Thank you for going through all of the aggravation. I only have two comments. First, I noticed you have a lot of shade, that might be one reason your pool never heats up pass 80. I am making these hula rings for this year. Maybe they will or wont make a big difference in temperature but I'm doing it because i hart the big solar blanket. We'll see if it's a good idea for me. Thank you again

@@Jookeerr wow, this is so unexpected. But very nice. I have a bunch of hula hoops for sell 😂🤣. They might have worked but I gave up. I had gorilla glued and hot glued a very nice thick black plastic, that started coming loose after a few weeks. It could have been the teenagers handling them roughly though. The problem was, for some reason they would get turned Parallel to the side of the pool and once blocked off the skimmer. That was it, I went back to the bulky solar cover. You never know, unless you try. They might work for some ppl. But I should have listened to the author of this post.😊 Thanks for taking time and responding back

5 little lilly pads in a pool that size for only 2-1/2 hours? I'm not surprised it didn't do anything. But I bet if you made 20 of them and waited 3 sunny days in a row you would notice an increase compared to not having them. It's an alright solution during the weekdays, but on weekends you should heat the pool with a bonfire heater.

I did it one day last year just because I had just mowed the grasshad to go to work too long to take a shower so just jumped in the whole real quick. 86 is my tolerancewould it have made a difference if you made more of those to cover the entire pool and put them out at night that's when the heat escapes. 5 years in my home May 28th give or take 5 days each way we hit 86 in July it is 94° like bath water usually the end of the season is September 15th. All I want is to extend the season by two months each way so April 1st to November 1st..

Solar covers work great but are a pain to take on and off and also create a safety hazard. We had a dog accidently fall into our pool and she got trapped under the cover and could not swim to the steps. I imagine the same could happen to a child. They work great though by covering the pool at night and taking off in morning it maintains your temp better.

I threw a bunch of black plastic crates in the pool awhile back and the dark color is what made it warmer. Also, it made cleaning the pool easier with all the leaves in patches and less dead bugs as they were able to get back out after having a drink. Crates are nice because they heat a foot deep where the dark plastic sits under water. Like black pebble tec pool bottoms will raise the temperature only a few degrees not tons.

Use a clear piece of plastic fill with water to make a parabolic reflector then use it to heat the water we did it one bright winter day raised a 18ft circular inflatable pool. Pool temperature definitely raised it was warm to the touch. I'd say it's to do with the side's of the pool yours is permanently cold due to sides not being insulated where as our cheap inflatable retains heat better.

I'm pretty sure that you need a large mass to convert 100,000 lbs (estimate) of water to a higher temperature, so 6 or 7 1/2 lb discs isn't going to cut it. Also, with my heat pump, I am probably lucky to see a degree increase per hour. I may lose 3 or 4 degrees overnight, and then my heat pump will kick in and run for 3 hrs to get me back to 80F. So I don't think you ran your test long enough, but I don't think it will work because by the time it takes it up a degree or two it will be dark and your temp will start dropping. The best DIY solution I think is the coiled black hose on a sheet of plywood.

This will absolutely work if executed right. The top MUST NOT! get wet. The solar cover MUST have full sun exposure. There MUST be enough coverage to offset the evaporative cooling. Wind plays a big factor. Remember your pool is a big evaporative cooler! Your pool is Partly shaded. My pool has a factory black cover. (It also is also ground insulated. Some pools are, some are not. ) It does in fact work good, for a passive heater. Also, it can take several days (my solar cover) to collectively heat that volume of water.

yeah, that was a waste of everyone's time and money who tried those people's so-called 5 min craft. you will need to keep your pool covered any time you aren't using it and make sure your cover is on after the sun goes down to stop all your pool water heat. There is no way 5 small hopes with trash bags could heat up your pool even over 2 weeks, there is too much open area for heat to get out. I bought a dark blue solar cover for my above-ground pool and it helps my pool stay above 80 degs most of the time. when it's in the 90s during the day I have to keep the cover off or it can get up to 95+ in the water
