The results from my heated bench project. Here's the original video: • Heated Bench
In this update, I'll discuss the success of this bench in maintaining a proper temperature for seed starting and for encouraging roots on new cuttings. You'll note that I've changed over from sand to a peat-based media. Also, I wanted to provide a measurement of power consumption, so that you'll have a rough estimate of how much it would cost to run something like this.
If you find these videos useful, there are a few little things you can do to help me out.

That’s cool. New sub here. Planning to build a small greenhouse this spring, this looks like a great idea. Need to go watch the other video as well, thanks!

Try vermiculite as your medium. You can always mix it with sand/coconut fiber/peat moss etc and you will have less weight to worry about...

Nicely done. Barring a mold issue, do you see any benefit to using plastic sheeting overlaying the soil to slow evap?

Thanks Rob. That's an interesting idea. I do get the impression that pressing my plug trays down into the mix gives really good contact, and may help the transfer of warmth. I wonder if the plastic would act as a barrier to heat movement. I may have to try next time I change crops.

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm I'd be interested on your results. My thoughts went to "water bed" conduction of heat. Overlay would limit depth of pots into base tho. Keep us posted and thank you for sharing your ideas. Rob C North Dakota

I really liked your use of the electric meter to get an accurate usage cost.

Hello, I have built a similar bench and was going to use sand.You comment regarding conducting of the heat made me hold up on putting in the sand. I have Coco fibre cubes, could I use them and do I keep them damp? Thank you
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 2 года назад
Yes, that'd be fine, and keep it damp to conduct the heat.

Hello, what can you add to the sans media if you want to stick with sand to help it conduct heat better? Could you give several reccomendations from what you think will be the best option to least best? Thank you. I just need this last piece of information before I'm done with my mini greenhouse with bottom heating project.

What kinds of cuttings are you rooting on that bench? You root Roses? Great job, I love the high density foam used to create the walls. How long do you think that bench will last?

Can you think of any drawback from using those flat propagation heat mats with a thermostat vs. the cable ?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm
@FraserValleyRoseFarm 10 месяцев назад
Only the size. On the table I'm able to fit something like 10 flats - if you were able to find a thermostatically controlled heating mat that covers the space you need for a reasonable price, it's a good way to go.

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm I was wondering same... So it is similar using heating cables and using heating mats. It's just matter of size of space? Which one do you prefer mat or cable?

During the time I use it most, between 5 and 15 degrees celsius (so like between 40 and 60 F)
