Definition of cold: Riding 4 hours at zero degrees Fahrenheit on the Jersey Turnpike with 4 lanes each side at 60 MPH; an approximate chill factor of -43 degrees, no heated gear. Required 7 layers of clothing top, 5 layers on the legs and thermal insulated boots with gloves inside military arctic mittens . But it really sucks after that 4 hours when the temperature rises down in Maryland on I-95 and it starts to snow for an additional 4 hours riding. The roads get salted and the slush permeates your gear. The salt water causes the voltage from the coils to short over the top of the engine giving the appearance the engine is crawling with lightening. Then the hypothermia begins to set in starting with extreme shivering. And when the shivering stops you start to get blank spots in your vision. When I got to my destination I had to soak in a hot tub for 2 hours to warm back up.

I love the Ralphy/Randy bit. I know you say it's bulky but I think you made good choices. You look nice in it and I like all the reflective they put on the jacket. I have never had heated gear before either so I will watch you for updates and see how you like it. Thanks for sharing.

I have had the Keis J501 long sleeve jacket, and G601 gloves for around a year now. The beauty of this set up is that it is easy to get ready. And I get to choose whatever jacket without any bulkiness. I only use a long sleeve thin baselayer and outer jacket. The jacket heats my core, arms, back and neck. It is toasty, I have tested it to -1 C so far (colder with Wind Chill factor!). The gloves don't get HOT, but they do keep my hands from freezing. So not hot hands, but not cold hands. I pre connect the gloves to the jacket and have no issues. If you go for a balaclava, I would recommend an EDZ merino black balaclava. So comfortable and warm. Total cost was £400 in the UK. I never have cold issues with my legs or feet. I ride 12 months a year now. Cheers!

The liners in the jacket and pants are the same as the gen 2 pant & jacket liners for sale online. So basically you bought a heavy duty riding jacket and riding pants and that came with the Gerbing heated liners. Best bang for your $. I've got the Ex Pro jacket but my gloves and socks are both battery-powered. I'm thinking after Xmas sales to buy the same setup you have except the socks and I prefer the short cuff gloves . As far as the bulk. Give it some time all riding gear needs some break in time it will get more comfortable. My jacket is well worn and less bulky than when new. Also, the wool "extreme" battery-powered socks have the heating elements all the way around the feet 👌 I'll be using those instead of the 12v they've been amazing. Thanks for the videos. Rubber side down.

I've never used heated gear but I thought the exact same thing - it would kind of be like wearing a giant Hot Hands suit. I went out for a ride the other weekend and it was 32 degrees in the morning. I was able to make due with my normal gear (layered up underneath) but I'm going to need to invest in some cold weather gear if I want to extend my riding season.

Thanks for the good review. I have a lot experience with the Gerbing liner and gloves, but not with the jacket. I use a Rev'it cold weather textile riding jacket and pants. I take out the liner and use the Gerbing liner, then over that a bicycle riders windbreaker, then the jacket. The key is to thermally insulate the Gerbing from wind as much as possible without creating too much bulk. My experience is that the heated gear is easily overpowered by the wind chill. If it's really cold I wear a motorcycle rain coat over the jacket and I actually can be quite warm even in 30ish degree weather. In your case try a motorcycle rain coat over your Gerbing jacket, this should help without adding too much bulk. The rain coats a made from a quite thin material but block a significant amount of wind chill. Check out aerost ich out of Duluth, Minnesota also. They have great riding suits and clothing for all kinds of weather.

I use Widder heated gear. I have a vest with arm chaps that go under my riding jacket, and gloves. That is my standard winter riding gear for under 40 degrees. I also have the heated leg chaps that I wear when it goes down in the teens. Here's a tip for the gloves: plug them in before you put them on your hands.

I've been thinking about your reaction to your heated gear. Something isn't right here, sitting there on 'high" for 15 minutes should have roasted you. I use a different brand called Warm 'n Safe and when I hooked it up to the bike I had the polarity wrong. Say the remote that controls the heat (wireless) battery goes dead the garment will go into 'medium heat' mode to get you some heat. Is it possible something like this is causing the low heat output? Eric

@@MotoBlonde Call Gerbing and get some support. They're a solid company as I used their gear for 10 years before I switched. Used WarmR brand stuff this past year, worked pretty good. Pants, shirt, and balaclava. Heated grips and thick gloves do OK, but tops of hands/fingers still get cold. Been using thick socks, but thinking about other options (like the WarmR boot liners since the shirt and pants work so well). Nice is that it's all base layer, so would wear it in the morning (hitting 29*) and then stuff them in a bag for the ride home in the afternoon if it's not needed. Oh, I added a thick fleece neck thing on top of the balaclava. That was a nice add on to layer some warmth. As already said, pinlock for the win. No question.

I have ridden in a SnowBlizzard @ -10F for hours on a snowmobile with only heat grips and heated thumb control .. I just got the Gerbing's 12 Volt Vest.. I also ordered the 7 Volt battery powered vest for hunting.. but Fed Ex takes a lot longer.. I have had good luck that Gerbing called me back for customer support questions. I have not seen the Revzilla Video yet.. My thinking with a heated Vest is that if yoy keep your core Warm then your body will still send heat to your hands and feet too. I have had a neck gator for years for Snow Skiing.. I froze all the skin on my face and neck snowmobling in an open face Helemt as a teenager about 1977... I got the Neck Gaitor for skiing waist deep powder in Utah in 1983.. snow on the bare skin is cold ..

Did you ever test this stuff further? Cause I've got some cheaper gear and it works great! I would imagine this stuff works much better? I've tried quite a bit of stuff honestly but eventually to get this setup or California heats version. I use liners currently but I think outer layers would be more convenient for rides to work and the like.

First Gear or Warm & Safe is the best-heated gear options. What stands out with them is you can purchase a remote heat troller that you can install on the bike where you can see it and reach it to adjust the temp up or down. Warm and Safe has a heated undershirt that keeps the bulk down versus wearing the jacket, or you could purchase the jacket liner that goes under the jacket. I've been using First Gear for several years riding in 30-degree temps and I feel the warm and toasty you were looking for. I mention Warm and Safe because First Gear has changed some of their gear and Warm and Safe have the best and simplest setup. The Glove Liners and Socks work the best they both keep all your fingers very warm and your feet extremely warm. I know it is a large investment, but if you are looking to stay warm and feeling great I would give Warm and Safe a shot. I also use the remote heat troller instead of the cable connected heat troller. Works via non-wired to the clothing and runs on 2 AAA batteries, or you can run wires to the battery. I can not turn the temp all the way to high, it gets too hot. Hope this helps.

Did you change the fuse to a higher amp? Maybe the fuse that you have with the tender is too low to draw power from the battery. If you are running all the gear, you need at least a 20amp fuse. The reason I just went with heated grips is I was worried about putting too much stress on your electrical system. I found, other than my hands, I can get warm enough with just warm clothing, windshield and rain guards on my crash bars. Al so I'm going to put wind deflectors on the grips.

@@MotoBlonde If been caught numerous times in early Spring and late fall weather with days of freezing rain and snow. I've had to push wet snow off my windshield just to see. I've managed to get nerve damage in my hands and they get cold very easily. Some cold weather tips, you may have also heard them. Get a good rain suit, 2 pieces, large enough to fit over your cold-weather gear. This helps further to cut the wind. go to an outdoor shop and get the best cold weather long johns you can find. Get some Morino wool socks that go to your knees, get a pair of thin nylon or other synthetic socks to put on under the wool socks. The nylon socks will help to wick any moisture you will get on your feet. I always wear heavy-duty leather pants, there hard to find but virtually last forever. I also wear 16" high top Engineer boots. I bought Wesco Boots, made in the USA, and hand made. My other ones got wrecked in my accident, but I had them for over 30 years. To be honest - I bought this set with the intent of traveling more - that's just not in the cards right now - and I returned it for different heated gear - less bulk, and battery for around town. It was just too much for the minimal winter riding I'm going to be able to do right now. For longer rides - I can see it being a good choice though if I got it to heat up correctly.

I so recall riding home from work at 12:45 AM, the cold air leaks were brutal. (No fairings or hand wind deflectors). Did have insulated gloves and down filled nylon jacket on. Would be interesting to hear from full faring bike riders… Thought someone claimed to have a hot-air heater on-board a full-dresser, (which you would usually find inside a enclosed car or truck). (Not sure if the heater claim is true or false, it is a; “hearsay” item).

long time cold weather commuter here. make sure you have the correct fuses in your heated gear wiring. if you have one that is too low, it will not let enough voltage through to heat the stuff. my gerbing gloves will melt the skin off my hands at 100% unless i am moving. I only use gloves. I have a first gear cold weather jacket, a Klim jacket, and cold weather pants. the bike at idle will not make enough voltage to properly heat all that gear. you might want to just try plugging in the jacket and gloves to the controller (slip the pants, just wear them, don't plug them in). also, you can mount that controller so that it comes out right where your seat and tank meet, for easier access. I think I will get a heated liner this year to see how that goes. I ride a road king, so not really more protection that your bike. I do down to about 25 degrees as long as there is no ice or re-freeze from the night before. I've always said that by heating your hands, it heats the blood and warms the rest of you. good luck and feel free to ask any questions if you like. I ride 45 miles into DC and the same back home in the cold, and I really like it. the other thing is your tires never come up to a good temp, so traction will not be ideal. so just be careful. great video.

the coldest I have ridden in was 21º last year. I ride down to about 27º but not colder. Not because I dont want to but my bike is carbureted and doesn't want to start below that. I have never used heated gear but I'm really interested in it. I wear a generic infinity scarf a pair of north face Il Solo FUTURELIGHT gloves and my doc martens boots and I always wear a pair of women's cuddl duds leggings. my mom told me about the cuddl duds. she wears them and my dad wears them to hunt. theyre comfortable and fit nicely under any pants and never need to be removed. and for a jacket I wear an arcteryx parka. when I get to my location everything I have on looks like normal clothes! The only downside is my gloves are only good for about 30 minutes before the cold creeps in. so trips longer than that I stop for a few minutes every 30 and warm them up and I'm on my way. thats what ive perfected for me commuting from out of the city to downtown boston for work. $2 in gas instead of the ridiculous $21 total round trip that takes an hour and a half 1 way! and I get to have fun on the bike and it only takes 23 minutes. I dont have a car so I have been riding in the snow too lol. but thats my choice I hate the commuter trains

I only wear a heated jacket and gloves as far as heated gear First thing use a 20amp fuse with that much gear no matter what the directions say. Also plug the gloves into the jacket and then put them on your hands. Also if you have connected correctly a little power light should come on if it is working. I can definitely feel the heat from from the gear.. And finally it is a balakalava.

I use and older Harley Davidson jacket liner and gloves that was made by the original Gerbing with a controller that works very well.
