Taking inspiration from my Danganronpa x Persona arrangement ( • What would Danganronpa... ), I've been wanting to do an arrangement like this for a really long time! Both pieces are incredibly iconic within Danganronpa and Ace Attorney and the context to which they play have interesting similarities! So they seemed like the perfect pieces to combine.
The key this time was working out how best to put together the various parts of each piece in a way that made sense, while incorporating elements of originality and allowing musical breaks at times to introduce the various phrases within each piece. For Heat Up, this was fairly straightforward given, melodically, the piece largely repeats the same ascending phrase (although I transposed it to match the key of Pursuit) throughout. The remainder of the piece combines synthesizers and percussion. So much is happening under the surface of this arrangement to try and recreate the feel of Heat Up such as a very quiet whiny sounding synth in the background like the original and a pulsating synth bassline. Most notably, I happen to have the same percussion Masafumi Takada used to make the original Heat Up so this was the easiest way to recreate the feel of Heat Up. Can't forget about mixing in the vocals from the original too ( • Danganronpa Trial Musi... )
In terms of Pursuit ~ Cornered, the majority of musical similarities with the original happen on the surface level of this arrangement, such as the piano solo and the end section. However, the fast pace intro from the original is something that starts this arrangement and continues throughout the entire arrangement. In addition, while the synth bass was created to sound closer to the bass in Heat Up, the notes being played are much more reminiscent of the rhythms in Pursuit. Small rhythmic changes from the original were also needed to this given how chromatic the original is (explained in my analysis of Pursuit - • Music Breakdown: Pursu... ). Essentially these changes involved diverting from the original subtly to make the rhythm more in line with the key signature. Otherwise, the rhythms would have clashed at times.
Finally we have the number of more original yet inspired sections. More than anything, this was my attempt to play around with the pieces and add my own flavour to them. It's something I like doing with arrangements generally.
As always, thanks for watching!
