Heather Langenkamp (A Nightmare on Elm Street, Dream Warriors) joins us this week to share her experience as one of the most iconic scream queens as Nancy in A Nightmare on Elm Street and what her opinion of horror as a genre has turned into.
Heather opens up and shares her struggles losing a child to brain cancer, and why Mike Flanagan’s script in Midnight Club resonated so much with her at that time.
We also talk about her sacrifice during the making of Dawn of the Dead, what it was like working with a young Johnny Depp, and how Wes Craven saved her multiple times in her career.

In March of 1987 me and buddy snuck in to see a rated R movie. We were sixteen but we didn't care because NOTHING was going to stop us from seeing "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors". But we had no idea that Nancy would be in it. And the way she made her appearance was AWESOME! Nobody in the theater saw that coming. Heather Langenkamp f'n rules!!

Heather has been an inspiration to me since I was 5 years old when I saw A Nightmare on Elm Street for the first time. The film made me fall in love with the genre and became my favorite film of all time along with New Nightmare. Her portrayal as Nancy gave me so much life as a bullied kid who had lots of “Freddys” in his life. Watching that character grow throughout the film was captivating and it made me feel like I could stand and get through the hardships from 3-12th grade as the bullying progressed. I’m an author and I use Nancy Thompson as a template for all my female and male characters; Wes knew what he as doing writing this character and Heather beautifully brought her to life. I’ve had the opportunity to meet Heather several times over the years and talked more than just movies, but about creativity in general and she’s always been so sweet and humble and funny that you can’t help but to be awe-inspired by her, her story and her journey. Fantastic interview ♥️💚

@pensacolian211
@pensacolian211 6 месяцев назад
A lot of social outcasts and kids who were bullied gravitate to the horror genre. Just speaking from my own personal experience, but growing up with zero friends, and enduring endless torment from my peers movies were often the closest I got to social interaction. I lived vicariously through the characters on screen, and for a couple of hours or so I could forget my own troubles. I think that's why horror fans are so passionate about these movies. For a lot of us these movies were all we had.

I interned in the production office on Wes Craven's New Nightmare. I'd just moved to LA a few days prior to starting on the movie and I was totally overwhelmed by the whole experience (moving to LA, working in Hollywood, etc). A couple of months into the production, there was a holiday party at Wes' house that I got invited to. I was a little nervous about going but did attend, Heather, who I hadn't really met, maybe sensed my discomfort and made a point to came over to talk with me. I remember that she was really kind and that made a big difference for me that day.

I remember seeing A Nightmare on Elm Street and I was blown away. Let's be honest, Heather carried that Movie. Johnny Depp was a complete unknown when he played the character Glen. It's a Classic Film that stands up all these years later and Heather is a Big Reason why that is. She should be a much Bigger Star. As far as I'm concerned, she's a Living Legend of The Horror Genre.

Just rewatched the first Nightmare for the first time in over a decade. I had forgotten how good the movie is and Heather Langencamp is a lot of why it works, maybe even moreso than Robert Englund. She's one of the few actors in that kind of movie who actually feels like she's the age she's supposed to be and like someone you would know going to school.

Heather really touched on what made Nightmare on Elm Street successful in a round about way. Wes Craven, similiar to Clive Barker later, really tapped into the human psyche when exploring urban legends and how they sort of sit in our subconscious. Real life is kinda scary in many ways.

Great discussion, as always, Michael. Regarding what you said about putting aside a career, to focus on raising your children, and that being a sacrifice... I think that lends itself to the idea that most women find a career more rewarding than raising a family. That may be true, but it's also sad. I'm sure it's hard to have perspective on this, without having children of your own, but I think a mom who dedicates her life to raising her children should be praised, especially these days. Nonetheless, in this circumstance, Heather did get to have it all. Even if she only ever did the first Nightmare on Elm Street, she cemented herself in cinematic history, for all time. Then, she put her family first, which is awesome, and her kid(s) are probably better for it.

What an amazing interview... her analysis of horror, her outlook on loss, friendship, etc. So authentic, honest, and thoughtful.

Wish Midnight Club had gotten at least another season, really wanted to see where Heather's character would go. And there's been so much good horror these past couple years though! Horror is definitely having its renaissance.

Mike Flanagan I think on tumblr posted his entire synopsis of what the second season would have been. It really would have been a good season 2. Such a shame it got cancelled.

Another great episode!! I relate so much to her in how she grew up on a farm and didn't do the same things as her friends, as her life was basically the farm. She seems like a really down to death and very relatable person. Keep up the awesome work Rosey!!!!❤️😊

Heather is truly down to earth, kind ,sweet and funny. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting her 4 or 5 times when I worked for a horror convention. Robert is also a truly amazing man!!

As said in Wes Craven's New Nightmare (I'm paraphrasing really) "Yes but you gave Nancy her strength, so you are the gatekeeper" there's a reason Nancy is such an incredible character after all these years and why Heather is such an incredible actress. I know her acting career hasn't quite panned out how she might have liked, but I'm glad she's so into the horror scene still and into makeup and effects these days. Also, quite enjoy how she is friends with the Dead Meat crew! Love it!

Back in the 80's I made friends with our local movie rental owner. He would give away the old cardboard standees long before they started selling them everywhere. Over the years he gave me a Nightmare 3 standee, a Leatherface standee, and a Part 6 Jason Lives poster.
