• heathers off broadway ... part one • heathers west end but ... inspiration video go watch it's better than mine hey here's part two hehe this was so much fun to make I love heathers
I may or may not have fallen back into heathers while making this Thank you for all the support :) Oh god I just realized I put crochet instead of croquet LMAO Also with the amount of people who want to sing seventeen with me we can start a choir
id assume it would be their death clothes or their funeral attire but for this having a girl in a sleep robe and two guys in briefs just works so much.
I think it's the guilt manifesting. Veronica's imagining the ghosts of Heather C and the other two jocks in their last attire before she unalived the three of them because she didn't even want to unalive them in the first place.
1:11 look, if YOU found out the boy you've been in love with for ten+ years who you thought invited you to his homecoming party was 1. apparently gay 2. apparently gay WITH his best friend 3. and they apparently committed mutual suicide 4. and at their joint funeral you found out their dads were ALSO gay 5. FOR EACH OTHER 6. AND THEN THE GAY DADS MADE OUT AT THE FUNERAL i would also be going through it. i can't blame martha on this one.
She was delusional as hell though. I dont know why they wrote her so dumb and creepy. She kept his scab and thought it meant he loved her, and then denied the possibility he's gay because of her own delusion. She was right that it was a murder, but she only came to that conclusion because she thinks she know who he is and she thinks he's not gay because he loves her secretly. Boohoohoo straight girl he's not gonna pick you even if he's straight
@@hyukleberry5567 damn, dude? Martha thought ram loved her because of the letter, and she loved him. He liked her when they were younger. She was pushed around and bullied for it, and obviously came to the realisation that he didn’t like her, because she ends up offing herself knowing that the only guy that showed her any attention or kindness didn’t love her anymore, was killed, and then her best friend was now rejecting her the same way. So your comment just comes off as aggressive for no reason. I’d also add that ram literally gave her the scab, and they were like little kids.
the fact that heathers is still relevant even years after it debuted (excluding the west end era) i still don't understand how they still haven't had a revival cast in america or even a broadway run back in 2014
I genuinely think it’s because they handled the topics they have slightly better than the source material Honestly, as an adaptation, this should have been a disaster.
@@riceryss_ I totally agree! My dumb ass really just thought about doing a recast for the movie and not the musical 😅😅 either way, I love the musical just as much as the movie, no matter who the cast is
Dan is actually just such an amazing actor and person. My biggest flex is that my parents were good friends in middle school so I’ve met him before. He’s a very cool guy
i cannot fathom how good of a JD dan is. everyone says that ryan is their favorite, but i think i'd have to disagree. i love both performances so much (i listen to it on spotify and the off broadway version all the time), but dan just does it better to me? he sounds more unhinged and actually insane, unlike ryan does in the spotify version. ryan sounds more annoyed that his plan isn't working, however dan's version makes JD sound more desperate and confused, and that's how i picture him. also, that high note in freeze your brain? it makes my ears a lot happier than ryan's version. this could ofc be spotify's fault because it may have been too loud the other way, or it was too hard to capture in a studio, dunno. either way, they're both my favorite JD's, i think i just like dan's more.
SAME DUDE!! I have seen clips of Ryan's acting for heathers but idk I'm in love with Dan's acting it's exactly like you said! His acting is more based on being so lost he spiraled I mean until Heather died he was just doing his own thing but it's after that he behaves far more unhinged and to be very honest, like a God choosing who gets to live and who doesn't, dude 100% needed therapy
honestly! jamie muscato has slightly crept over dan for me as my fave JD, but dan was always my favourite since the beginning - partly because he was the only jd i had a reference for (i could never find any full bootlegs for ryan so i can't really compare his version w theirs). i think both dan and jamie seem more like actual scared, traumatised teenagers becoming more and more unhinged whereas ryan looks too much like a 30 year old playing a high schooler, everything feels a bit more controlled with him - which i guess could be explained by the general view of a "sociopath" (in quotations because it's an outdated term, just can't think of a better way to describe it) being y'know, "fake" and calculated and manipulative - but idk, i like him as JD, but smth about jamie and dan do it better for me. by meant to be yours both of them feel like they've completely snapped and it's brilliant.
Did anyone notice that at the end of Meant To Be Yours, Veronica's mom comes in with a snack, which is a callback to Candy Store, where Heather says, "If you lack the balls, you can go play dolls, let your mommy fix you a snack"
I always liked how Heather M’s actor portrayed her moving. Heather M always had really jaunty hyped up movements, up until Life Boat. Instead of everything she did seamlessly folding together, kind of like when she’d be cheerleading, when it came to LifeBoat she was slumped over swaying a bit, and all of her actions in time with the chorus were sharp and jagged. Her character is being authentic, showing the whole school her suicidal thoughts, so she doesn’t feel like she needs to stand presenting the flowy cheer captain look. When Shine A Light Reprise (whine whine whine, literally my favourite number it’s the only piece of fiction that’s ever made me cry.) comes on, when HM is having her panic attack, it’s the same thing just more frantic.
2:37-2:50 I absolutely love the blocking that Veronica is mimicking the movements of Heather Chandler, showing that in that moment, Veronica is acting unlike herself, but more like Heather Chandler. CHILLS everytime! 4:20 Also, when you think about Heather McNamara's words, this means that Heather Duke does not give her a ride to school even before the victims were murdered. Jeez, that hurts
My favorite part of this musical is Meant to Be Yours. The flip btw the chorus and verses is so jarring bc the verses are 4/4 but the chorus is 3/4 so the chorus is super romantic sounding like a waltz/ballad but the verses are the perfect contrast with the manic speed and stuff. Like they captured JD's instability so well it gives me chills every time.
I absolutely despised when people who didn't know what heathers was, and started to say "I would open the door for him lol" sure you would. It was such a dumb trend!!
*THIS*, especially with deranged and mentally unstable characters in media such as Shigaraki from MHA. Like girl, if you don't stop simping for one second and realize that they would kill you -with no hesitation-
The trend made some cool videos I admit, I don’t draw my unhinged characters much but this was a fun excuse to 🤣 but I do agree, people saying they’d open the door have nooo idea what they’re saying 😬
I like the bit where JD panics for a bit when Veronica confesses to the murders and then he does a nervous little laugh after when everyone laughs, he's thinking it's fine. He just got lucky.
In my opinion, kindergarten boyfriend sounds like a Disney song, and not so ironically, is a lot like Martha, the Disney stories with all the drama.. but a happy ending, it's so sad she didn't get much a happy ending for herself
I thought so too, she kinda got a happy and unhappy ending because like Veronica after said if they wanted to go on jiffy pop detail again but she still has her body all messed up and doesn’t get Kurt to herself, i love how in heathers even if she didn’t get her official happy ending she still ended up being with Veronica
At 9:14, idk if anyone noticed, but as Veronica is hanging and JD is breaking down a bit, Heather, Kurt, and Ram slowly turning their heads to either stare at Veronica or JD is so unnerving
One thing that I noticed after watching the movie is that (I am going off of Dans JD) in the movie it seems like jd never really loved veronica, and was just using her from the start, and she realizes this later on in the movie. While in the musical it seems like jd really did love veronica, and him murdering heather, kurt, and ram because he was quite literally crazy for her; and veronica knows this too as she threatens to break up with him because she thinks thats what might get him to stop. Also the difference in when both jd's found out veronica "unalived" herself. If I am remembering correctly, movie Jd laughed and explained his whole plan to blow up the school and had snuck into her room to unalive her. But when musical jd finds her, he looks genuinly heartbroken, but got over it quick and only fueled him further to blow up the school. Or he pretended to be sad because he knew she wasnt really dead seeing as when she finds him in the broiler room he doesnt seem overly surprised. Depending on how you view that scene in the musical it could change your whole perspective of the storyline. Last thing I want to mention is the scene just before jd blows up: In the movie when they say goodbye I think he says "our love is god" (I dont remember exactly) but he says it more sarcastically because he knows that veronica knows what his whole plan was and just the way they say goodbye has a "I'll see you in another life" vibe - which I find a perfect ending of their relationship. In the musical however their goodbye is a lot more heartfelt, and during the "our love is god" reprise you hear jd sing "Id trade my life for yours, and once I disapear, clean up the mess down here" because he realizes the trauma hes given veronica and thinks that the only way for here and the rest of the town to heal is for him to be gone. While hes singing that you hear veronica sing "oh my god, wait hold on, not this way" because shes realizing what hes doing. I heard this from someone else, but I completely agree with it and just thought I would throw it in, but; when veronica sings "say hi to god" at the end she knows that deep down his heart is in the right place and that she still thinks hes a good guy therefore thinks that he is going to go to heaven. This ending is a little bit more heart clenching, but I wouldnt change a thing about the way the musical finishes off their relationship. This is just something I realized after the 7th time rewatching the musical, and I thought I would share it. Sorry about the 3 almost 4 paragraphs, and hopefully this makes sense (its nearly 1am and I am not rereading it to make sure it makes sense)
Yeah, Gen X kid here and I totally agree. I grew up with this iconic film, so it took me longer than it probably should have for me to like this show... even though it's such a good musical, the film is still one of my all time favorites. Like I get why the musical has Veronica climb through J.D.'s window... it's a different time with a different zeitgeist and so the characters are different. But J.D. climbing through her window is like peak Gen X teen vibe. And yeah, movie J.D. finding her dead and being like well OK then, off I go to kill everyone... again... PEAK Gen X teen. They're both awesome... but they are very different. And I think it's just a generation thing... like in the 1st part of this review, Vistilia says that movie Veronica doesn't really react to the deaths... oh no my dear, Veronica is reacting in PEAK Gen X teen! But if you didn't grow up then, I can definitely see how it doesn't look that way. We didn't over emote. We dealt with stuff inside. And I can very much see her reaction. It's a very interesting generational character study. I dig it.
i’m so glad that you noticed the callback to candy store in shine a light reprise. like, its such a great way to show the effect that heather c *truly* had on everyone and i absolutely love it speaking of heather c, i wanna point out all of the visual ways that she affected people, specifically veronica cuz it’s something i *love* personally so like when martha was talking about how she thinks that kurt and ram were murdered, veronica was standing _exactly_ like heather. which i know is obvious but still its such a great detail. similarly, heather c’s pre-death outfit is incredibly similar to veronica’s outfit and its something i just found out today. really brings to light how she really is truly a heather and i love it just a few details, thank you for coming to my little ramble lol
i find it so crazy that at 5:42 j.d's dad is implanting the idea for how j.d himself will try and blow up the school. "you should have seen the fireworks, got it all here on video. loaded the upper floors with thermals, set the whole thing off with a norwegian in the boiler room. kaboom." this play is amazing
This isn’t my my idea but I read it so long ago I forgot where it was from: 6:30 in kindergarten boyfriend Martha isn’t wearing her glasses and I think someone theorized that she didn’t want to see the fall distance from the bridge so she wouldn’t panic and cop out from jumping which makes this scene even sadder
I love how at the end of dead girl walking reprise when they're wrestling for the gun and it goes off you cant tell who's been shot until JD falls to the ground. Thats always been one of my favourite small details and I hate when other shows don't do it.
hypothetically if i were to say “september 1st, 1989" would other people want to, i dont know, maybe recite the entire musical with me????? i mean just hypothetically of course
For some reason I always thought “I’m talking you and me in the summer of ‘83!” Was to trick ppl into thinking they’re gay and “that was one hell of a fishing trip” sorta tied it down like, oh they’re not gay it’s just a joke, idk, I only found out that it meant they WERE gay last year
no, they were 100% alluding to the fact that they're gay. "one hell of a fishing trip" just means that there was something else going on during that fishing trip if you know what i mean
0:32 in the movie he asks her if she took german, she tells him she took french. right after he gave her the Ich Luge line, he was making sure she didnt know
This one goes out to everyone who actually APPRECIATES “Kindergarten Boyfriend” because I’ve heard so many people say it’s the one song they skip and I- FUMING 😤
Kindergarten Boyfriend is my absolute fav song (with Lifeboat at 2 and Freeze Your Brain at 3) bc on the surface it's just like "oh I love that kid from Kindergarten and this horse with wings shows up :)" but it's actually ab how suicidal she is and how he life has been a living hell ever since 1st grade. Also the "oohs" (there might be an actual term for this but idk it) are truly haunting and sound like melodic weeping and I absolutely love that ab the song
my sister’s only flex is one that most heathers fans would LITERALLY KILL FOR. so when she went to see heathers, her fave song is meant to be yours. so she was singing it PASSIONATELY and the guy playing jd saw this, and APPARENTLY HE LOOKED HER RIGHT IN THE EYE AS HE WAS PERFORMING AND SMILED AT HER. LIKE.. WHAT
my friend/old castmate saw heathers on off-broadway at that particular performance, barrett accidentally cut her arm during dgw and was half dying onstage while my friend was dying laughing in the audience *this said friend of mine is now playing veronica at her university and karma may strike soon*
5:10 I don't see people making this correlation very often and it's so worth highlighting it, shine a light reprise is like the result of McNamara's mental state during the musical, is played in a way that shows it's not "real" (and yet people hate Duke for this, specifically)
Anyone else love a show when the characters are feral as all get out and the actors are cinnamon rolls? I saw a college production of Heathers. The girl who played Heather C had gone to my high school, and was literally one of the sweetest people I've ever met. She's a brilliant actress and it was wild.
The way Jd is singing so innocently in Meant to be Yours, then "VERONICA". Truly a deranged masterpiece. you can tell that he went to some dark laces to play that character. Also, in Seventeen reprise, when Veronica reaches out to Heather M, shes being held on by Heather D, and the breaks free. I love that detail of character growth.
okay but has anyone else noticed that in seventeen veronica says “hold me tighter” and JD responds with “even closer” but it’s foreshadowing I am damaged because JD says “please stand back now, a little further” and i love that
Can we just appreciate the full chest voice belted A5? 9:25 that note among others (G#5 in Beautiful, G#5 in Dead Girl Walking, several C#5 and other high belts in other songs) makes Veronica one of the most difficult female roled to play on Broadway imo because most people simply cannot belt that high consistency.
i love that they made martha wear childish clothes bc she was only ever happy in kindergarten and she’s trying to preserve that sliver of happiness to stay alive…she does the same with the princess bride movie
Where does Dan get all that fkin energy oh my god- Not just the performance but also in the ending where hes jumping and clapping so aggressively and high fiving people. He did JD such justice in his performence.
Martha wasn’t being homophobic, she had a crush on ram for 10+ years and so she was in denial that she was gay. I’m sure eventually she’ll realise that he is, indeed, gay gay homosexual gay.
I don’t know who I got this from, but someone said that Veronica always saw the good in people, and by saying: “say hi to god” she truly believed JD still had good in him and could go to heaven or something isk
Ok, Chandler might be Vistelia's favourite, but, hands down, mine's Macnamara. She's probably the kindest out of the three, the most enthusiastic, and just a leader. Her arc from the popular girls, to attempt of suicide, to soon redemption is beautiful and I love her relationship growing with Veronica. She was concerned on where Veronica was since of JD saying she was dead, and, honestly, I ship them. Also Vistelia, I will be willing to sing Seventeen with you.
i think we forgot to point out that when veronica is telling martha off, shes standing in the same pose as heather, trying to immitate her. at 2:46 theyre standing right by each other in the same pose. UNNOTICED DETAILS
I love that Dan like slightly backed up and stiffened when Duke asks McNamara what her damage, it's like a small detail that brings me happiness for no apparent reason
fun fact: the first night i met my boyfriend we found out we both love heathers and we sang the soundtrack together and danced in the kitchen. it was love at first ‘seventeen’ singalong
Fun fact: For the movie they were gonna let JD blow up the school but they thought it was too dark so they gave it a happy ending! This movie and musical could’ve ended SO MUCH WORSE
how is noone talking about the fact that Veronica and Heather synced their poses at 2:50 which shows that Veronica is getting more like Heather?! it's soooo good
The amount of little details in this musical is just amazing. I keep noticing something new, for example in the song "the me inside of me" you can notice that Veronica actually sees Heather C and follows her with a gaze
Heather's will always be my favorite musical. Beautiful vocals, great characters, and especially how it's the perfect mix of funny and super dark. I always loved how the handled the darker themes and showed just how genuinely fucked up a lot of the things going on were. Loved the movie, but the musical just did the emotion justice. The best part is the constant reminder that thESE ARE 17 YEAR OLDS. THEYRE KIDS(ish)
I loved her laugh so much, and meant to be yours the swich between soft and angry really shows how an abusive relationship really is and they did so great showing those little bits throughout the entire musical. Just french kiss
IT’S SO TRUE Martha isn’t there at all for shine a light because she runs off! I played Martha over the summer and it made me so sad thinking about it, but also my good friend played Fleming so I got to vibe backstage and watch them perform
When you think about it, Veronica accidentally confessing to the murders is kind of similar to the ending of American Psycho in a way. The ending hints that if your on the top, it doesn't matter what you do or what you confess to, everyone is the same and no one will believe you (the ending is interpreted in different ways, this one was just kind of similar to Veronica's accidental confession).
Other people explaining their high school be like “oh I got in trouble for chewing gum” or “I met your other parent” but Veronica has to explain her high school like “ya I was friends with these girls called heathers and got a boyfriend that tricked me into killing people then calling it a suicide then he tried to blow up the school but instead he blew up himself”
0:22 i think in the movie Veronica acts apathic of Ram and Kurt death 'cause she didn't know how to react, she burns herself with the cigarette shor after, to try feel something and JD just lights his cigarette in her burns, as she crawls up to him... i believe in the movie she goes into shock, while in the musical she is more reactive
