My Brother in Spokane is a new General Ham and I've enjoyed talking across the State to him in the evenings. Only problem is, it's difficult to hear him clearly with the 100 watts of power he is using.
I dug into my Heathkit junk box and found enough to piece together an SB 220 Linear from the remains of several SB 220's and SB 221's that I've acquired over the years.
There is nothing special about this video. It will take you on a 45 minute, meandering journey as I address the needs of this once operational unit while it also takes a pretty close look at the component level of the SB 220.
The video was made for my Brother but I don't see why it shouldn't be shared in case there is something that might be useful to others who might be doing similar restoration work.
Currently the unit puts out 800 watts PEP with one Power Tube.
It works fine with two but, I only have one to give him.
His antenna also is limited to no more than 1000 watts PEP, so, I am sending it over with one, like new, Eimac 3-500 power tube.
New tubes run almost 200.00 a piece from China.
New Eimac 3-500Z tubes are pretty much unavailable.

Years ago I built a Heathkit SB220 amplifier. Things went well during the kit building. When I got finished with it, it was time to fire it up and test it out into a Heathkit Cantenna dummy load. I got plenty of RF through bands 80-15. On 10 meters I got only the power the Kenwood 820 put out and nothing more. I checked and re-checked all the wiring but gave up and took it to the local Heathkit store. The store manager told me to bring it back to the test bench for testing. The technician set it to 10 meters with a wattmeter to a dummy load. Instead of tuning up the radio in steps as you did in those days he cranked the radio up to 100 watts and started twisting the tune and load controls on the ampflier. The two 3-500Z tubes started to get red hot and then white hot, then the parasitic chokes on top started to smoke! I told the manager to have him stop as he was burning up the ampflier tubes. At that time they were $ 180 each! He told me the repairman knows what they are doing and we sell the kits in front and that is all that counts. After several letters and phone calls I got two new tubes and somehow they found what was wrong with the amplifier. When asked they did not know. I had build a number of Heath Kits and about half of them had mis-labeled capacitors or errors. It’s no wonder some people call them Greif Kits. I am still running the amplifier to this day and that was 37 years ago.

Nicely done. I wouldn't even sweat not having the second tube. 800W is a gracious plenty. That's a 1.5 S unit increase. The second tube will only add another 3db or half an S unit for a total of 2. For the money that 3-500s cost, it's not worth it. Heathkit realized this, and the SB-1000 was the result.

You can find them out there, Gwen. It might be a bit much for your magnetic loop though. The RF field might be a bit dangerous. I too had to live in an apartment for awhile and simply ran a coax out to my car where I had a Low band mobile whip. Worked OK but I like your idea better. Peter

Good basic low cost re-furb Pete. It sure hummed on the modified sine wave ! This shows clearly that you don't have to spend money on Harbach boards to get your amp going. two notes fyi.. swapping in the nichrome wire parasitic traps is good cheap insurance for these amps, by far the most important mod on can and should do. When you increase the value of capacitors in a capacitive input power supply ( here) the PIV increases...this can have consequences at the input end. And the inrush current becomes larger also. The heath design is superior to many...and very worthwhile to invest time and money in as you have done. My orphan SB220 will get the treatment this winter. Nice video w6wuh. 73

The "blown-up" choke was, more likely, due to a grid-to-filament short; 3-500Z's were/are known for this, and Heath bought a whole bunch of faulty tubes back in the 1970's. I built several of these amplifiers in the 1970's, and I recall exchanging tubes -- no questions asked -- when those chokes went up in smoke at initial turn-on.

I've never been a Ham, didn't care to take the test. I was owner of an AM Daytimer for a little over 27 years. Learn alot from two Consultant Engineers that I was working on those rigs myself. I had a Collins 20V-3 that I loved, but to stay on, I had to buy a Harris (Gates One) in 1997. For back up, I had a 1948 Gates BC-250GY. We were able to build an internal resistor network to kick the power back to 5 watts for pre sunrise operation and the audio bias stayed perfect! My wife and me owned the property of the little studio and tower site. We sold the building and property. We just turned in the license to the FCC and I retired from that. I play around with Part 15 AM stuff non since I'm disabled.

When that choke goes up in smoke, there is almost certainly a "grid-to-filament short" in the associated tube. Mind you, I'm only about 25% into the video.
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 7 лет назад
The chokes don't blow up with a grid to filament short, Ed. It's the plate to grid shorts that blow them to kingdom come. The grid is normally at dc ground potential and the filaments are grounded through the center tap of the transformer. Worse case with a cathode to grid short is the five volts of bias would disappear and the tube would start drawing more current. Red plates and no amplification. I've had it happen.

I am trying to find parts to build an amp similar to the SB-220 or ALS-80B. The HV Variable caps are hard to find and HV transformers are pricey! I have a chassis that came out of some Satellite antenna control equipment that is very close in size to Heathkit one. Just want to have some fun building a homebrew 3-500 AMP.

I just bought a Heathkit SB 221 today at a local club auction for $200. I am new to the hobby (4 months) and I am very excited to own my first amplifier. The previous owner was there and said that it works and produces 400 watts with 80 watts driving it. Being new to the hobby, I do not plan on messing with it until I can find someone to help me who knows what he is doing. I don't want to kill myself or damage my Icom IC-7300.

I'm working on a SB-220 for a friend. Any idea what would cause the R3 resistor to burn out on the meter board? Obviously, I'm not charging anything for this except that he buys parts. I just put together a new metering board and a new HV caps/resistors board. I'm just trying to figure out what could have caused the R3 resistor to burn out, so it doesn't happen again. Also, just found that the Plate Voltage/Grid meter is open too (probably burnt internally).

Sounds like one of the tubes has an interelectrode short. Plate to grid blows the chokes on the grid leads to ground and cathode to grid usually a meter and associated resistors.

Excellent video! I just bought an SB-200 that has two Harbach upgrades. I haven't fired it up yet because I'm waiting for an Ameritron keyer interface and an antenna tuner that can handle the power output. Did this amplifier have an RCA socket for the RF input? If so, did you leave it that way, or did you put in an SO-239 connector?

Great job Pete!! I am just a little confused on something. I thought that tubes like the 833, 3-500z, 813, exc, needed dc on the filaments to prevent hum in the output signal, and this amp and others I have seen use ac. Is there something I am missing? Thank you for reading and giving another amp a few more decades of life.

@dogtagsvette 8 лет назад
Hi JD, thanks for the comment. To answer you question..... You are right about the AC on the filaments. In order to keep the 60 hz from modulating the tube, they center tap the filament transformer so the ground return is balanced on both sides of the transformer. Pretty slick, huh? 73's

why are there so many diodes on the power board, are they for different voltages?
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 7 лет назад
The diodes are arranged as a voltage doubler. Since the High voltage is over 3400 volts, the diodes are seriesed to provide enough peak inverse protection to keep from shorting out as well as to provide full wave rectification. The remaining single diode is a Zener that provides bias for the 3-500Z tubes. Good Question!

Hello Pete Great great video. I have some problems with my old QRO HF 2000. I have contacted QRO Technologies via email. Even 2 times. But nobody seems to care. First, the QRO HF 2000 is a great amp and I'm sure Ray Connin would not wait long for an answer. Problem 1 is: As long as the amplifier is on Stanby mode, everything is fine, as soon as I switch to operate, the reception of the transceiver drops dramatically. Problem 2 is: as soon as I turn on the amp, the tubes glow hot without tx !! I turn off the amplifier to protect the tubes. I would appreciate it. If I get an answer, an opinion or a solution to my problems. Regards, Ozer
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 5 лет назад
Hello, Ozer; First thing comes to mind that one of the tubes has a filament to control grid short. When this happens any bias applied to the grid of both tubes is shorted to ground. This may cause the tube to conduct without any drive. Easy way to find out is to remove one tube and see if the problem occurs. If it does, put the tube back in and try the same test with the other tube. If it still does it then look into the bias applied to the tubes. Also, make sure the relay isn't being keyed in the amp. Unplug the PTT interface from the driver and see if the condition persists. I'm hoping one of these tests will get you on the right track. Thank you for your kind comments on the video.

@@dogtagsvette Hello Pete, Thank you for your effort and advice :-) As recommend from you, I tested both tubes one by one. yes as you said, both tubes glow without tx. Thanks, Stanley. Love the chokes. They have saved a power supply on several occasions when a grid to plate short has occurred. You can see what Hi voltage does to a grid choke when a short occurred in the video. if the grids were grounded the full 3500 volts would find a path to a hard ground. I suppose a fuse would work as well.

Pete, Great job on this amp rebuild. I am rebuilding one myself that will be my back up amp. I have a couple of questions for you. First, the bias zener, can you give me the part number so I can order one from Littlediode as well. I want to upgrade from the 10 watter. Secondly, I have seen in some other repair videos, that the by pass caps and chokes on the grid circuit have been removed all together, and the 3 grid lugs on each tube just hard grounded to the chassis. Is there a reason, not to do this?
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 7 лет назад
Thank you for your comments, Buddy. I got the diode out of my junk drawer so I can't give you a number. It was a 5.1 volt 20 watt. I had to change the insulators to make it fit and it was tight. I might relocate it if I did it again. The direct grounding is often argued as many say it makes for a more stable amplifier. I chose to leave it the way it was as the 2.5 mh choke makes a really great fuse if you end up with a plate to grid short. It happens sometimes. Fact is, if you look at the video again you will see the result of just such a short on one of the tubes RFC. A direct B+ short to a directly grounded grid circuit could take out your diode stack. Not good. Good luck on your build. Love to see some pix or a video when you get Her done.
@buddywommack9671
@buddywommack9671 7 лет назад
Pete, I got in touch with Littlediode and told them about this zener, and even sent them your video. They came back with a 1N3308B part number. I have not installed this because I have decided to go in a different direction and install a QSK aftermarket board, which provides an adjustable bias voltage as part of the card, eliminating the need for this diode, so if anyone needs this one they can contact me. Thanks again for your very helpful video. Allot of get tips!

Buddy Wommack I directly grounded the grids in my TL922, it seems to have had no negative effects although the gain seems to be a little more than it was. It has not been a troublesome amplifier, although I did have a problem with the tx/rx relay, the coil had gone o/c, heating the tags fixed it, but not sure for how long!

was that inverter pure since wave?
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 7 лет назад
Starts out as square wave while in limiting and then becomes a sine wave. Wouldn't matter either way as the amount of current being drawn is small. The idea is to see if the power supply operation is intact before plugging into the mains. Power transformers can be expensive. I also use this method when bring up older equipment after years of non use.
@mylesl2890
@mylesl2890 7 лет назад
Great thanks, I understand the purpose of the voltage/current ramp up, my point was more towards being afraid the square wave might damage your gear :) dunno, great video.
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 7 лет назад
Putting a load on the transformer with a square wave might increase hysteresis and eddy current loses causing the transformer to get hotter than normal but, I'm sure you can see what I was after. I've been using the method for almost 50 years and never lost a transformer but, pretty sharp of you to notice.
@bigfoottoo2841
@bigfoottoo2841 6 лет назад
Why don't you use a variac?
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 6 лет назад
Fair question. If you use a variac, you don't have any control over damage that can be done by a direct short to ground failure. With a current limiter, your supply voltage can disappear faster than you can turn a knob. Further, a Variac doesn't start at full High Voltage where a failure might occur. By the time you turn the variac up to full voltage an arc over or short can damage components. My system protects from catastrophic destruction. IF you like your variac, please continue to use. It does offer some protection. I like mine better, though.
@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 6 лет назад
Don't like variac's. You can still destroy parts should a failure occur. My method limits current and provides instantaneous protection should a short occur. You can't say that for a variac. If a breakdown or short occurs, a variac will still provide enough current to fry a part or even a transformer. My current limiter shuts down instantly.

I don't recommend directly grounding the Grid in the Heathkit. Newer 3-500's (Chinese especially) seem to be prone to grid to plate shorts and when that happens You can have a burned grid to ground choke or a burned power supply or Plate current meter. Directly grounded grids don't give You that big an improvement. L4B drake uses a grid choke to ground just like the Heath kit. 30L1 uses a 47 ohm resistor on the grid and the 30s1 uses a tetrode so I'm not sure what amplifier You're talking about. Some Hams want an extra 5 watts output so Your mode will do it.

However, don't leave it on but for about 30 seconds, then rinse it off and let it set for about 5 minutes. If you don't do this it will take the white lettering off. Once it has set, damb the face until dry. On mine I used air and blew it dry after letting it set. Once dry, the lettering was fine. It looks like a new case now.

@dogtagsvette
@dogtagsvette 5 лет назад
Several schools of thought. I don't and don't recommend it. You will realize a tiny bit more gain in exchange for some instability at the higher frequencies. Also, it has been suggested by some that improved IMD can be realized with the chokes and bypass caps. Lastly, while it's possible to use fuses or resistors, the chokes do protect the power supply in case of gassy 3-500z's or inter electrode short. Please feel free to modify and enjoy a totally DC grounded grid but I can't in good conscience recommend this modification. In my humble opinion.
