So a little description for this since it looks like you have no context and I’m bored: Heaven officials blessing (tian guan ci fu) there is the heavenly realm the mortal realm and the demon realm. They’re all sort of connected and everyone can kind of walk through all the realms (the heavenly realm is kinda harder to get to than the others) but when it ranked all the demons the “devastation” level aka supreme only has had 4 ghosts while the next levels down could have hundreds or thousands. Though this is mainly categorized as a BL (boys love) donghua and I hope that doesn’t change your mind towards watching it. It actually focuses on more of the plot first and has the BL mixed within. Though I think it’s really good and really recommend it. (It’s season 2 episodes are actually coming out right now) Also if you like action and horror it’s really good since it can get pretty dark.
Couldn’t understand why it sounded all weird at first and the voices were off, then I realised you were listening to the Japanese dub instead of the original Mandarin. I’m so used to listening to Japanese dub that it too a while to click. I’m just starting your reactions now and I hope you’re enjoying it. The author asks quite a lot of her audience in terms of patience. There are going to be a lot of things they don’t understand or characters that seem 2D, but as the books went along, the blanks were gradually filled in and characters deepened until everything was pulled together at the end.
There’s a Japanese dub version? On what platform? Crunchyroll only has Mandarin and English dub, so I’ve been watching in English. The VA’s in the English dub version are so spot on with their lines and readings, though. And the guy writing the English script for S2 has actually read all the books a d is the VA for Sang Lan, so he has just nailed not only his character but the script entirely and it’s fantastic. So many innuendos and subsequent dirty jokes in his S2 script. 😂
@@dajtoad1 Kictor’s the one who keeps saying James Cheek wrote the script for S2… but I haven’t watched the interview video Kictor did with him yet. EDIT: So just watched the first bit of the interview, and all I have to say really, is that the interview is two years old, and S2 is from this year, is it not? It’s currently airing for this 2023 Winter season? So I don’t think it’s wrong to ASSUME at this point that James has read the light novels to help him get into character and write the script, especially since the S1 director specifically told him that people “who read the books” would be watching closely. And James IS listed as the ADR Script Writer for S2, so that’s just a fact.
@@cursed_ink He said in the first interview that he did not read the script. He just assisted on occasion with how to make it match the "lip flaps" if I've got that expression right. At that time, he also had not read the novels, just a little. So he would not know about any of the multiple twists and revelations. It's possible that that situation has changed since then (as you point out, time has passed), but I find it unlikely that an actor would do miles more work than necessary to voice a character. Of course, he might have done, but I have nothing to show that he has (except if he's now taken over responsibility fully for the translation / fitting script to screen - is he the only writer/translator listed?).
@@dajtoad1 He is the only writer/translator listed for S2, from what I saw. And I’m mostly just making the assumption off of the fact that he was willing to do a deep dive into Chinese culture/mythology for the role in S1, as he said in the beginning of the interview, thinking this was an original animated work.

please watch it in mandarin! I'm not a mandarin speaker and I can't understand anything, but nothing can ever top the original language of a show, everything from the acting to the music.
So, I’d categorize this as a xianxia since there are demons and spirits involved. Wuxia would just be a martial arts type of story. I’ve read both and a lot of anime/ manga have its roots in this type of story. Just my observations, I’m currently reading Fist of the North Star and it’s straight up wuxia.

i know by the time im commenting this, you probably have already caught up and may alrady know what im about to comment but for my peace of mind i will just comment it anyway lol the heavenly officials are gods so they have temples where mortals can pray to, their job is to listen to those wishes and grant them if possible, in return they get merits. the more prayers you answer, the more worshippers you attract, the more merits you earn.
I definitely think you'd enjoy another donghua that's based off a series by the same author. It's got ghouls, zombies, betrayal, (true love) and redemption arcs. It's 3 seasons. Definitely has more overt subtext than this one. Also think of merits as heavenly currency. 1 stick of worship incense burned in a temple dedicated to a god counts as 1 merit. Meaning Xie Lian would need to either do heavenly chores (like the ghost hunting) or have enough worshipers burn enough incense to pay off the debt.
@@TheNerdyverse-DannyReactsit is totaly worth it :) as someone who has finished all the books i can tell you that its worth watching/reading. Its not mainly about the romance (especially in the donghua) and has cool/epic fight scenes, a deep story and also scary moments!

I'm literally on Book 8 right now (the last book) and I'm so obsessed. I only started reading this like a week and a half ago 💀 I've been busting through these novels man they're amazing and also incredibly fun, highly recommend reading them (THIS STORY IS CRAZY AF) I had watched Season 1 of the donghua when it came out because I was someone who was really obsessed with the other work of the author at the time, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Mo Dao Zu Shi). And I loved it then but knowing what I know now, I love it even more lmfao because I can now watch this show and see all the sneaky foreshadowing lmao
