One of my black friends who TO'd for fighting games had to stop using the n-word because it got him kicked out of a venue for saying it so much, so he started censoring himself in public places by saying "gamer" instead. He thought it was funny though, so he went all-in on it during Discord calls and saying things like "Yo, wassup my game'uhs." The irony is that just about everyone in our friend group is, in fact, a gamer, so it was actually appropriate.

Honestly, this feels like black people actually are winning culturally. The gamer word was seen as a positive word for a dark colored friend. I'm Canadian and I didn't know what "Hard R" meant either until fairly recently since I just never heard anyone refer to it like that. When I initially heard it I assumed it meant the same as Michi because it's what made sense to me. Can't expect a lot of random specific slang to cross cultural/language barriers, not everyone revolves around the USA.

Great story ! It's amazing how different cultures can pick up on something and only part of the meaning is transmitted. Simple example in Japanese: arubaito means part-time job, but it comes from German where 'arbeit' just means work. So literally some of it was lost through translation. 🙂
