Released in January 1943, this naval instructional film follows a Gunnery Petty Officer giving a conducted tour of the Royal Navy heavy cruiser HMS London in Scapa Flow.
London was one of the Kent subclass of Britain's interwar County-class cruisers. This improved version featured enhanced armour protection and other modifications including changes to internal arrangements.
The ship was commissioned into the Royal Navy on 31 January 1929. At the time she had a displacement of approximately 9,750 tons and measured 630 feet (192 meters) in length. Her main armament consisted of eight 8-inch (203 mm) guns, which were mounted in four twin turrets. Additionally, she carried a secondary armament of four 4-inch (102 mm) guns, along with anti-aircraft guns and torpedo tubes.
HMS London underwent a major rebuild shortly before World War II. While her armament was largely unchanged, she was given a modern superstructure highly reminiscent of the contemporary Town-class cruisers. This provided hangar space for two Walrus amphibians, as well as accommodation for new technology.
During the early years of World War II, HMS London was primarily engaged in convoy escort duties in the Atlantic. She was then assigned to the Eastern Fleet and participated in operations in the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal.
