Saturday 16 Nov 2013, M4, North Wroughton overbridge. Allelys Heavy Haulage of Studley transporting a transformer from Didcot power station to Avonmouth The transporter and its load measure 4.87 metres (16ft) wide, 4.98 m (16ft-04ins) high with an overall length of 89.67 m (294 ft) and gross weight of 637.80 tonnes.

Yes there would, when skateboard drivers get up level with the load, they slow right down to do a bit of rubber necking. I was a heavy haulage driver for a while, and saw it time after time.

I bet the driver of the low loader coming into view at 2.55 feels like king of the rd. He wont in a minute or two!

Great hauling, and just a shocking example of how NOT to drive on the motorway from all the cars. Slightly surprised you didn't catch a fender bender in your footage.

Hi and thanks for your comment. I have no idea on the cost but I would expect it to be way beyond my budget. As for how long it took to plan, reports at the time put it between 1 1/2 years to 2 years. They had a major problem with one of the bridges further along the route. The bridge would not be able to take the weight so they had to divert off the motorway, around the weak bridge then back on further along. This detour did cause major headaches as it involved using the whole road width at times so careful planning of road closures was required. There were a total of three transformers that needed to be moved and this was the largest of the three. They moved them one at a time about a month apart if my memory is correct. The other headaches for them to consider were that it took three days to complete the route and therefore they had to find locations to park up for the night, and you can't just stop something of this size in a layby. Also it had to be undertaken during daylight hours for safety reasons. Can't have it bumping in to something it didn't see in the dark. Hope this answers your question.

Thank's for the question MrEgg. from my recollection it took about three years of planning. In all they had three transformers to move over I think about a two month period. As for the cost I've no idea just glad I wasn't paying.

Woods Gaming Channel Thank you for your question. As far as I know it is not a back up, but an additional lorry to help with the hills on the route.

nivikb bit of both usually, extra horsepower and even braking for inclines, but can double up as a spare if needed

Instead of closing 2 lanes of motorway, why not use hard shoulder + lane 1 where possible and leave lanes 2 and 3 open, helping to keep traffic flowing better? Surely that would have made more sense would it not?

The reason they didn't use the hard shoulder is because hard shoulders are not designed for this type of loading. Also there are a lot of overbridges on this section and clearance in the hard shoulder area is usually less than over the main carriageway thus they would have been weaving on and off the hard shoulder. Further down this section they had to come off the motorway and use other roads as there were bridges and sections of the motorway as they neared Bristol that could not cope with this weight. There are other videos of these trips elsewhere on YT showing them moving along the smaller roads. Hope this help, thanks for commenting.

No, as hard shoulder would need to be kept open for emegency use,..... plus no use if theres a broken down vehicle using it.
