The average man in the wars where the .30-06 was used was about 165 pounds and the effective range was 500 yards for snipers. I am sure you can assassinate a deer at 500 yards with that. Of course, a good hunter can stalk a deer within 30 yards. At that distance, a deer can be taken with a 9mm, just like a human.

@JohnLloydScharf 3 года назад
I'd be lucky to make a 3" head shot at that distance. The average sniper in a hostage situation for the police makes a 57 yard shot. The head shot of JFK was 265 feet/88 yards (81 m). Sgt. York used a .30-06 and Audie Murphy used a 30-30. Both were subsistence hunters whose aim was a major factor in their success. Both of them won their awards based on protecting the freedom of Europeans. Our borders are wide open to our enemies.

30-06 is great! Ammo usually available anywhere. If you get a chance to look at ballistics the 300wsm has greater impact over all yardage ( kinetic energy) not poo pooing on 30-06 but 300wsm is considerably better in the charts. Will sat 30-06 maybe more available and possibly just a little less expensive.

If you are intending on taking a shot near 100 yards and under, the 45/70 would be a great choice. It will sure stomp a whitetail. If you are going to have opportunity out to 200 yards or more either 300 is more than enough to accomplish that objective. In fact they are relatively equal ballistically. Stay safe & happy hunting. @sleeper.simulant7327
@sleeper.simulant7327 3 года назад
My issue with .270 is it’ll pencil through a deer without expanding at close range. A guy I work with shot one deer at 11 yards with 150 grain nosler partition hand loads 3 times without any expansion on any of them. He then used 170 grain Berger EOL’s next year, also didn’t get any expansion at just under 30 yard shot, 2 shots no expansion. The partitions expanded good at 250 yards he shot a nice buck with in a neighboring state. Don’t use 270 for close range if you want reliable expansion... 308 and 30-06 cannot be beaten for all around hunting.

That's some accurate shooting WTW. I'll be taking my 30-30 this year. I just sighted in my Sears model 54 (Win 94 copy) with 160 grain Hornady leverevolution ammo and that stuff shoots great. If I hunt some fields then I might use my Mosin with some 200 grain sp, which shoots very well since I modified it and free floated the barrel and scoped it. Last Wednesday my friend and I were shooting some steel plates at 200 yards. Surprisingly my Mosin with 182 fmj had a fist size group at that range while my friends Scar with his ammo had the same size of group. I'm looking forward to this year! 🇺🇸💪

My Marlin 1895SS, from the mid 1980's, is a very accurate rifle. Even though the hold-over is huge, I used to pop one-gallon water jugs at 300 yards fairly regularly. My hand-loads used the great Sierra 300 Grain JHP in Remington cases, using WLR primers, over IMR 3031 powder. This load gave me around 1,880 fps, and 2,360 fpe. I don't recall the exact drop of that Sierra bullet at 300 yards, but it was "substantial"! I had mounted a simple Bushnell 4x scope on the Marlin, and it worked well for my eyes, back then. That was back in 1993. My aging eyes would not do so well, now, me thinks! I'm guessing the .45-70 would damage less meat than either of the other two cartridges you tested, though I've never shot either of them. And, though I shot water jugs at 300 yards, I would NEVER take a shot a deer, or any other animal, at that range! 100-150 yards would be my limit, when hunting. Thanks for the interesting video, and well done on the testing. Take care, and God Bless! - Doc

In Australia, it's mostly thick scrub country for our biggest Samba deer, so my Henry 45/70 with 405g bullet takes first prize.

You left one of the most heaviest hitters out of the bunch. The 338 Win Mag.

I slayed a deer last year with my 45-70 open sights. Can't wait to do it again, also got my 350 legend I am excited to try!

Of these three rifles the only one I would even consider hunting deer with is the 45-70. It is a pumpkin thrower and would make a big hole but not create a lot of capillary damage like those high velocity buggers. The other two are good for taking that shot at an elk before he goes over the ridge at 400 or so yards.

Witt machine makes clamp on muzzle brakes for your 300 win mag and 300 wsm. It will reduce the recoil to less than a 308 win. They work great.

Longest shot I'll have is 80yrds, so the 45-70 will be putting the work in this season.

80 yard shots, why not just use a 30-30? Well proven over many years.

That is a 325 Hornady lever-evolution not a Winchester super X. I know tgis because Inlove the Hornady for accuracy but it needs to be harder. It disrupts too much tissue. It over expands. The superX is a big hollow point and it does a nice job of dropping deer.
