Watch smoothly done "long time in cut" super heavy turning of a Rotor shaft with a special material removal rate (MRR). A 25 metric ton Rotor shaft is machined with the cost-effective, screw clamped, positive insert SCMT38. The extremely wear-resistant Duratomic® coating TP0500, enhances the "long time in the cut" where a lot of heat is continuously generated. "We make it easy" to overcome the metal cutting challenges and provide secure and productive turning and profiling solutions for castings and forgings in a variety of materials including superalloys.

@@thedillestpickle you have to think of the scale they're on the average size of the machine space (the boxy shape behind the rotor) on 6MW models is larger than most houses (even the relatively small Haliade 150-6MW has a machine space that has 3 floors, each at around 30 m^2, not including the red platform)

@@SecoToolsAB When I look at a piece of metal I have some kind of internalized representation of its strength. It will cut through most anything if sharp, it will bend if you really crank on it, it will scratch but you aren't going to shape it like putty without extreme force. I know an 1/8" bar of hot rolled steel is going to bend way more than a razor blade before it breaks, but I don't really know how they will fare against each other. To see one piece of metal dip into another one and just shave seemingly endless chips without any drama lets you know there's a hierarchy in metals, and that in that regime some metal might be like wood and others like butter. Nearly all of this comes to us through materials science, where you throw away the intuition and use hard data to develop materials and make them into something that can be manufactured. Just my $.02 :)

I tried this on our machine - 1" DOC, 300 SFM, .085"/rev. It wouldn't break a chip anything less than .070"/rev. It really is amazing. But be aware - in the unlikely event that you try this on your machine, I calculated a 26,000lbf resultant force on the toolbar. It nearly snapped the bolts holding the tool onto the machine. Not to mention pegging the load meter (250HP). Probably won't try it again...

LOL it does happen I can tell you that but it is rare, mainly because the bigger a piece gets the bigger the tolerance gets. No they don't send it back there are other options. You can weld it then recut it, or have it metal sprayed. But as the old saying goes measure twice cut once, with parts like this it's measure 5 times ask for a second opinion and then another THEN cut

its called "roughing" machining. getting lots of extra material off the workpiece in the shortest amount of time, leaving sufficient material on both diameters and lengths for subsequent operations. many times after roughing these raw forgings need stress relieving before finishing operations begin.

The turnings are rainbow colored because the tool is depositing enormous amounts of energy into bending the metal as it's cut away from the piece, heating it to hundreds of degrees and causing a thin oxide layer to form on the surface which causes light waves reflecting off it to self-interfere and either cancel out or amplify depending on wavelength of the light and thickness of the film. Thus, the deep blue metal we know was heated to 600F and the orange red parts heated only to about 400F.

Many modern lathe tooling inserts are built to take the heat and pressure generated by machining operations. Coolant is normally used in operations where heat could cause the part to warp, or to help clear chips, such as in a trepanning operation.
