On watching water - from a backpacker with almost 40 years experience. Yes, it means you'll carry a little more weight, but it's a VERY good idea to carry at least enough water to make it to the SECOND water source ahead of you. You never know when the next water source is going to have a dead animal in it, or be dried up into a mud pit. This is especially important in arid conditions and could save your life. In the desert, I'll usually carry enough to last to the third source. ALSO, and I cannot stress this enough, drink your fill AT the water source. The best place to carry your water is IN your body.

That was the advice I got from seasoned hikers. They said to fill up your belly with water first, then your water bag. Always make sure to carry more than you need just in case.

As someone down in AZ, I wish it were as easy as "don't bring as much water." Around here, you bet I'm going to get every last drop out of my boil in a bag. Water caching is another technique we use out here if we know we're coming back out the same way. It's heavy at first, but you're also stronger at first!

I went backpacking this weekend after years away from it because I’d gained so much weight….I lost 50lbs this year and could go again! As I was humping up a steep incline at Frozen Head I was thinking that I used to be walking around ALL the time carrying MORE weight than my heavy pack! If this old man can lose the weight you can too!

You know, If you really use your Buff for cooking, and then wiping, and drying, and all the gross stuff in the kitchen, you will not want it on your face. Just bring a bandana for the nasty cooking chores, sneezing, etc and enjoy your $25 buff for what it was intended for. Total weight gain: 1-2 oz (though bandana may run slightly heavier when nasty and/or wet)

I disagree with their comments on water. I always carry 4 liters at the start, and then refill after I have drank the first three. Several times, this has saved me, as water sources were all dried up. I would rather carry extra weight from water than take the chance that I would run out.

that water tip was interesting, here in Australia in regards to water carry it really depends where you are and when, I've carried up to 4lt at a time and had to refill twice in a day due to terrain and heat, also my personal water mantra is sip often and hydrate (conserve sweat not water).. the bushwalking in national parks around even Sydney can be very unforgiving if you get water wrong because in our bush/forests even though you are less than 5km from a town you are actually in a designated wilderness area that can go from water everywhere and full streams to stagnant or non existent water two months later... even our local police and rescue services advise 1lt/hr.. in general though love your info... :D

I've been using a pair of Salomon GTX Ultra 4 low tops for my last few overnight backpacking trips, and they're just perfect. Good support, good traction, water resistant and lightweight. Also, no lace tying and quick and easy to get on and off. I have some Keen boots for Winter, but I'll never wear them any other season after trying these. Kudos on the "leave no trace" mentality you guys displayed. Know your water! excellent tip. Dan, relating to what your first tip was, I have trimmed way back on the amount of food that I need on a bp trip. By the time I'm done crushing some miles, I'm ready to rehydrate and turn in. Supper is something I have planned for in the past and hardly ever get to. Conversely, I rarely eat breakfast at home but after skipping supper at night on the trail, I'm ready to get some carbs in me for breakfast.

In Hawaii, we hike over uneven lava. Even if a trail has been cemented for tourists, it's uneven because of underground movement of lava (earthquakes) and old people have to protect their ankles. More protection = more hiking. Also, lava is beautiful at night, so boots protect from what we don't see on the trail. Even on the Mainland there's snakes and scorpions, etc. Wouldn't boots be your first line of protection?

Utah is a beautiful state with tremendous geographical diversity - hope you had a blast out there. As far as the shoe tip - one-size-fits-all advice on footwear is something I avoid. It would be hard to imagine a context in which I would recommend anyone wear regular running shoes for a backpacking trip. Maybe if their total pack weight (including food/water) is under ~15-18 pounds and they're going to be walking on pine duff the entire trip. There are too many comfortable hiking boot/shoe options out there to pick something that is not designed to support weight over distances, and has little to no traction on slippery surfaces.

Here's my tip #1 - drink a bunch of water at your car before you start out. Then you don't have to carry it and you're instantly hydrated. Put that first (half?) liter in your belly! And then go pee. Then carry a full water bottle. Tip #2 - carry a water bottle FILTER. Then, you can dip and sip from any water source along the way without having to unpack everything to find your filter. Since then I've purchased some lighter gear items to make up for the extra 2-3 lbs of water weight.

Another one, which kind of fits in the multipurpose category, is clothing. You don't need 7 pairs of clothes. Dressing correctly to minimize the amount of clothing might not save a ton of weight, but it will save some and will also save space in you pack, which can be just as valuable.

Given the incident of getting Rabdo, in the GC, have you rethought the “save your water” suggestion? Water with, and in, food is essential to keeping good kidney function. I have this tendency to want to reduce the amount of water I carry too, but I know my kidneys are susceptible because I am over 50 and have had kidney issues in the past. All those warnings about carrying enough water are no joke. Water keeps your muscles going by flushing toxins out of your system. You’re going to have to pee more when you drink more than you are used to. That’s OK, just part of the process of staying healthy. Someone who has trained and become acclimatized might be able to pull it off, but if that’s not you, carry water. Eat it in your food. Melt snow. Get it any way you can.

As one quickly approaching 60 and learning about many other retirees on trail, but not blogging or vlogging so much, I hope both of you can look at this demographic and share more for us oldies many of us going solo. After many fails, I have found that Hoka’s are the only shoe vs., boot my old feet can tolerate. The BEST pad is not the weight, but how well you sleep, I found salt tabs this summer in CA., heat, game changer if not lifesaver, hilltop guy, consider an option for a more elevated pillow if one wants, I am using 2 together and it’s kind of ok, would love 1 1/2 of the one, and lastly, show folks how to split up those dehydrated meals. Lastly, hilltop guy, am looking at ultra lite packs, but I want to try before I buy. Could you come up with an equipment-to-own option or just have some rentals with full deposit or something? No one in the industry that I know of has done this. REI does this a little. Ski areas do this a lot, but I know that they and their customers are at one location.

Those dehydrated prepack meals are terrible (too much sodium) along with being too much food for a solo hiker! Andrew Skurka has a great beans, rice, cheese, and Fritos trail meal that I have every time on my first night out , which means I'll be enjoying it this Friday! As a vegetarian who eats clean, I never bring prepack trail food. Ramen, couscous, lentils and rice,...all are preferable to those Mountain House meals. making my own at home is easy, helps my portion control, and cost much less! Happy hiking, Kristy!

I took my regular Brooks running shoes backpacking with some friends. we did about 30 miles in 2 days. I have zero blisters and my feet were great. my friends on the other hand had boots. we stopped so many times so they can tape up their toes and other things. they ended up with blisters

My beard is as long at the moment, but not nearly as bushy. I still need a top quilt. :-( One problem with multipurpose gear... If it's being used for one task, it's not available for another. Example: I have a trekking pole tent that uses two poles. However, often after a tough day hiking, I need need to use my pole as a cane around the campsite. Or if I'm wearing the buff, I can't use it as a pot holder. Also if you use it for a towel, you might not want to wear it afterwards.

multi purpose gear is a big one - i laugh at ppl who bring a dedicated down pillow...when if you're hiking anywhere thats cool at night, you should already have a light weight 3-season down jacket...fold it up - or pack it into one of its pockets and BOOM = down pillow. know the water carrying / availability on the trail also very important and fill regularly - i'll often just carry 500ml to 1L if i know im crossing several streams in a day (rather than a full 3 L camelback).

Great and hilarious vid! Again, we're just starting out... and don't know a thing, so can't add a thing(or take any weight off) in this scenario of losing wieght. But we've got "HEAVY QUESTIONS"... We just packed my new pack for 6 miles along a small leg of the O.C.T.. I don't have a sleeping bag yet... and my pack weighed 21lbs. Thought I was gonna die, was so sore by the end... granted, I'm outta shape and beach walking was sometimes treacherous over small round boulders into deep sand. ***how much should a pack weigh?? How much DOES YOUR PACK WEIGH ,DAN?
@robotboy5026
@robotboy5026 2 года назад
It's all pretty relative to your physique and how long you're going/ what terrain looks like. A 6'6 200+ in shape guy is gonna be able to carry a lot more than a 4'11 90 lbs woman. And a flat walk won't feel so heavy compared to trekking up a mountain
@kkheinrich9224
@kkheinrich9224 2 года назад
Well I'm 5'4 and getting into shape quickly since we go out every week about 3 times and either Street hike or trail hike - with our packs on. Our projected Thru Hike is 340 mi of all terrains, along the entire Oregon Coast to California.

@@robotboy5026 Thank you so much for your reply. Don't have our guide book yet, on this kinda hike... food is our biggest query. No way to carry 30 days of it. But towns will be plentiful, maybe not freeze dried though. 🤔
@robotboy5026
@robotboy5026 2 года назад
@@kkheinrich9224 even 21 pounds can get heavy pretty quick. All in all I'd say try not to focus on the numbers and more on what you find comfortable to lug around with you for the distance you're traveling. If you find yourself thinking "I could go without this" or "this might be too heavy to lug around to be worth" then listen to that. Just remember to always carry your 10 c's (5 if you want to go very minimal but it won't be comfortable or fun) and water is always something you'd rather over pack but that's my opinion. Stay safe and have fun!

@BacktotheOutdoors

It’s because his pack is small/short and therefore the belt doesn’t hit him in the “right” spot. You see this a lot with small day packs that have waist belts.

Great books to read, Lighten Up! By Don Ladigin and Ultralight backpacking tips by Mike Clelland . Obvious advice, go with what you think is the bare minimum, then when you get back from that short overnight trip add back items that you missed or felt like you needed. The best way to lighten your pack for free? Don’t put extra gear in your pack!
