I’m giving up on this hut + tarp idea 🥴 The previous tarp was waterproof but got ripped to shreds, this one was robust and didn’t rip, but it let the rain water through instead

You might consider the use of a pole in the middle, to create a peak in the tarp. That would allow the rain to run off, and might make things a bit more comfortable. Bearing in mind that space is always at a premium, you might also consider packing a second tarp.

Yep, that pole will make a huge difference in preventing water from pooling and collapsing the tarp. Also using another tarp for the flooring will make sure any water will seep into the sleeping bag.

You can solve the space problem by putting two large rocks on top of the walls on opposite sides and run the pole across the top, then put the tarp over the top

Claire, two suggestions. A DD tent pole to hold up the center of the tarp so the rain runs off instead of pooling and use the magic carpet as a door so the inside air pressure stays constant. I’d like to see you conquer this one like you conquer everything else and, as they say, third time’s the charm.

A telescopic pole or a long stick could also be use. Just put it across the top of the structure bfore covering with the tarp. Water will drain on each side of the tarp. Or, use 2 long pole and put it on each side of the structure, a guideline tied and the tarp on the top covering everything like a roof.

Hey Claire, just found your channel, super cool. My father and I had a trick we learned from Military training. Carry a candle in your pack at all times. For the tarp you use, rub the candle along both sides of every seam to get a great seal. It keeps the water out. The wax will eventually open up but it's a great trick for unexpected leaks. As long as it is pin-hole leaks, it works. Keep up the great work!

@@WildBeare Any slant probably would have helped. Perhaps you could try cutting three logs long enough to traverse the opening across the middle from side to side. Lash the three of them together in a pile like a triangle and then drape the tarp over the logs and the walls to raise the center up just a bit...

Yeah, don't give up on this spot. Just a ridge pole to spill the water of to prevent sag is going to. Spill water off as the manufacturer said. Maybe re-treat middle grommet points to improve waterproofing. What about a single tentpole type prop inside to hold tarp high in the middle. Maybe 2 walking poles lashed together with a towel or something to pad the top. We all want to see this spot work for you Claire. Hang in there Cheers from Oz🇭🇲 Neil

A collapsible tent pole should take care of the "propping up" problem. An extra lightweight tarp will keep you from having to decide to have under you or on top of you. You might have been able to wrap it around you from the looks of it.

Instead of trying to put a tarp over sharp stones, I would probably have put the tarp on the inside of the hut as a tarp tent. Tarp protected, safe, warm and dry. How you can still smile through a living hell like you went through I have no idea. Claire, you are a true star in the firmament of solo wild campers everywhere.

Make sure you learn from real experienced hikers and not from "Instagram hikers"... Being inspired is nice but knowing what to do in case of emergency is much more important, and its something that youtubers who drive to the spot to film ~30min video and drive back home know very little about.

This week, for example, a group of Dutch tourist (age beteen 12-28) in Austria decided to hike up Kaiserschild a mountain of almost 2100 meters high unprepared. They wore ordinary shoes and ordinary clothes, and they had no lighting and no extra food or drink with them. On their way back they got lost and ended up in inhospitable territory... So they had to be rescued the next (!) day. Under the feelings of freedom and happiness, people make stupid decisions.

Your view outside from your spot was amazing. Looking out into the darkness was bit of a shock but it felt safe. A 2nd tarp would probably be better. Now I want to spend a night outside in the elements because you make it fun again.

I totally get you in this vid. Went to camp at a waterfall on the coast last weekend in Yorkshire. It rained the whole time... when it wasn't supposed to... with big winds. Packing up the next day at 5am in the rain was a blast. 3 hr hike home and I was just ready for some real sleep! So funny though... how nights like this never deter the wild camper! Good to see the vids like this that are tougher and test you more!✌🙏🤙

Love your videos, just a hint, probably already been said in the 2k+ replies, proper canvas needs to be seasoned prior to use, hose down, make i wet through, then allow to dry, a warm sunny day works best, repeat several times, makes the cotton shrink and tighten up and water tight, for any further leaks you have on the seams just rub a normal white candle along the seams to seal any further drips 👍👍

Good plan. But, you may have needed a pole in the middle to dome the tarp so the rain would fall off rather than pooling where the attachment points are. It might also have made it less susceptible to the wind. Or, you could have brought a smaller tarp to rig inside under the big tarp to catch any leaking. Of course, if you seam seal the big tarp and give it another go. 🙂

The best option is to use a larger tarp (twice as large at least!), so the wind can't get a hold under it. Think of it like wrapping a present halfway-ish. Fold the corners, and tie one or more string(s) around it, horizontally (look out for sharp rocks) - That way you wouldn't need a heavy tarp and you could go back to a much lighter and completely waterproof one again (+ the door would be smaller, not letting so much wind inside (play with the design of the entrance). It takes some pretty hefty attachments to hold a sail - which in essence is what you have created here. If you combine it with a pole in the middle, like suggested earlier, to help the water run off, you should have a pretty sturdy setup. If done right, it would sherd the wind and the rain effectively - admittingly it would't look as nice from the outside, but it would do the trick, for sure.

I love your channel! I love going on your adventures with you and your positive attitude. Even when the poles fall down like in your super stealth video I think it was or in this one when the roof literally caves in, you still love it and want to carry on. I just have one of those pop up tents I occasionally chuck up in the garden during warmer months, but there is still something lovely about sitting in a tent tucked up in your sleeping bag in nature.

For that particular location you might consider an extendable aluminum pole. Here in the states we can get them long enough to have 8 or 9 feet of pole once extended. It may give you enough rise in the center of the walls.

Hey Claire upmost respect for going back once again in the pissing rain to that spot !! I've found canvas needs to get wet then dry out first to make water tight the fabric needs to swell and contract a bit like wood does ..adding a run off points will defo help... add a pole in the middle like a tipi shed water rather than catching it ..... stay awesome love your vids !!!

Hi Claire, I'm very impressed with your fortitude on this trip ! If the tarp's propped with a pole in the centre, would that allow the rain to run off sufficiently to prevent dripping? A better alternative might be a traditional waxed canvas tarp; it might be a bit heavier but it'll be 100% waterproof and it would take a hurricane to rip it up. Hope you might change your mind and have another go at making this hut cozy in the rain and wind.

Pro tip - to prevent pooling of a flat tarp... use a hiking pole, large stick, or other method to prop up the center enough to create a slope off the peak for water to run off... maximum comfort engage!

I may be a glutton for punishment, but this is my kind of adventuring. Being miserable is part of the experience. When it's done with, there's _nothing better_ than getting home, having a hot shower, then curling up with some blankets and a cup of tea.

Hey Claire :) It was great seeing you back at the old tiny stone hut giving it another go. It's a bummer that it didn't work out due to all of that rain :( It was a pleasure to see your positivity and upbeat attitude though... particularly after a night of zero sleep. You're always an inspiration. I'd say come back once the weather is a bit nicer and cover that old thing with some plywood then another piece of plywood until the whole thing is covered and cut it to shape then go out and find a bunch of stones and cover the top of the plywood and order it Together to create your own Roof Leave it for a season so that You Know it's actually sturdy and you're not about to Go underneath something that's gonna Crush You while you're sleeping and Then give this another shot because that is such a cute little Stone hut You found and I think that could be a Really cool camping spot for You to Return to every now and Then

I've been camped under a tarp for a few months now in the Aussie bush. I'm onto my 5th tarp. First one failed, second one leaked, third one was expensive, and it stunk of chemicals too badly to live under. One of them I put holes in from embers off my fire. And the one I have now is just a cheap black and silver 180GSM tarp from ebay. It's seen me through everything from sleet to heavy thunderstorms and downpours spinning off a nearby cyclone. I reckon don't give up. Because when you find the right kit, it's great. Nothing beats the feeling of being warm and dry while rain tippity taps on the tarp above. A non leaky tarp and some reliable cordage will make a huge difference to your fun factor.

Claire, if I may suggest, perhaps a rubber tarp to go underneath the poly-cotton. To angle the top and let the rainwaters run off, get a single sturdy tent pole or similar, preferably something you can bring along collapsed or telescoped down in your pack until you need it. The addition of a small camp stove, such as those used by military and survivalist groups, may not be a bad idea either, and is likely to help keep you warm even when your shelter leaks. The addition of a stove also brings the benefit of warm meals. Don't let that little mound of rocks defeat you.

Our local Boy Scout Troop bought new tents. We did not trust that they were totally waterproof from the factory, and used 'seam sealer' to prevent wicking of water through the sewn seams. We reapply every year. A flat horizontal roof is also a no-no. Raising one side (or even better) placing a log in the center will ensure the rain sheds. And remember, touching canvas from the inside with your hands leaves oil which can contribute to wicking. Good luck on your adventures!

As a kiwi who’s spent many (often consecutive) solo nights out in places like Fiordland, watching the Brit’s camp in the rain is a laugh 😂. Great video very entertaining. Ps. Always plan how you’ll make the water run off the tarp pooling water will seep through any tarp given enough time (I know she addresses this in the vid) and lightweight tent pegs are inexpensive, very easy to slip into your pack anywhere, and when used properly do a muuuuch better job than rocks, pegs and rocks together can be even more secure.
