Yale's Steve Gladstone, Craig W. Johnson '68 Head Coach of Heavyweight Crew, has announced that he will retire at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, capping a 13-year coaching career at Yale and a 50-plus year career that has spanned five schools.

I had the privilege of having Steve as a coach, a teacher and a friend. A true visionary who has advanced not only rowing skills in thousands of athletes but has also made them all better human beings. Thanks for so many years, Steve!!!

As a Cal rower during Steve’s first varsity-level role, I have watched the sport grow dramatically. He has truly lifted ALL boats! Thank you, Steve!

I've experienced so many coaches over my life both good and bad, but only one was a legend. Steve Gladstone so reminds me of him.
