Hebrew Alphabet (Just the Letters)

A quick introduction to the Hebrew alphabet, showing each consonant and each vowel and telling the pronunciation as you will hear it in American synagogues. I am part-way through another series that goes into more depth -- and yes, I will be completing that -- but I gather that some people just wanted it quick and dirty. So here's the entire alphabet in less than 10 minutes!

I am an Asst. Professor of history at City College in Calcutta, India. I have done my PhD on the Calcutta Jewish Community and also went for a fellowship at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel. I can read and write Hebrew. This is the best video on elementary Hebrew I have ever come across. I would like to know more about the language and its rich vocabulary. I write a little bit of poetry myself and would be interested in translating poetry from simple Hebrew into English. Hebrew is more than a language. It is the living soul of the Jewish people and the embodiment of three millennia heritage. I fervently hope that Hebrew would become more user-friendly for people like us who are interested to get into the nuances of the language. Shalom

on duolingo you have to know how to read Hebrew. Because everything is in Hebrew. It kinda sucks how they did it
@Communist-Doge

It's the same for all Duolingo courses with non-Latin scripts, to my knowledge. You're forced to learn quickly. Transliterating Hebrew (representing Hebrew in Latin script) wouldn't be very helpful and might simply be confusing.

As an Israeli I must say that you went very depth... Especially in the vowels. All of the forms used to pronouns "Ah" (Phatah) are not really important to distinguish in between. It can be simplified, even native speakers are not familiarized with the differences between all of the vowels.

For those viewers who are learning Hebrew, FYI, there are actually two categories for the Hebrew alphabet, the printing letters (which are represented in this video) and writing letters, which you use them whenever you write by hand, and some same letters in both categories may be entirely different.

I am 80 now, I don't even speak my homeland language correctly, but I have been studying the names of Jesus, Abba Father and Yahweh-Ruach for years but I would love to say the disciples prayer in Hebrew to Yeshua so I can recite it to Him the first time I see His eyes. Then I would like to learn the classic verses in Hebrew too. I am concentrating preparing for my first meeting upon arrival in the Throne room. John, Paul, Moses, and others that explained their first physical meeting with Elohim fell face down as though dead. I don't understand all that this means but I know that it will happen to us all and then He will explain the next step after that event happens. There will never be another time like this in all eternity and it gives me gooseb 6:06 umps

Good to remember that once you learn the letters Hebrew is phonetic. In Israel as I was standing in front of a fast-food restaurant, I wanted to pronounce the names shown. The word for Kosher I knew as clearly as I know how to read the English word "Kosher." But the longer word -- well, then I remembered the phonetic. I pronounced each letter and Voila! McDonalds. People around me also laughed and I felt pleased to have figured it out (in spite of the obvious arches) In Hebrew there is no word for that name so it's simply done with the letters as would be said in English. It was fun reading the signs around the country - but, sad to say, I only knew the meanings of the ones I knew. "Israel" - for instance. "Jerusalem" - another instance. Have fun!

This is the most thorough video introduction to Hebrew I've ever seen, but it's only accurate for Modern Hebrew pronunciation. Biblical Hebrew and the traditional pronunciations of Middle Eastern Jewish communities preserved many distinctions between letters that Modern Hebrew has simplified to make learning the language easier for non-native speakers. Unfortunately, however, an increasing number of Israelis are unaware of this fact.

this is one problem with the net, true you can learn almost anything you desire, but sadly there are scant quality controls over the accuracy of information presented to you. thus it becomes a task in itself finding reliable sources [such as this], and you can end up wasting your time learning inaccurate facts, life is too short to waste that way. shalom

This is the first time that I have heard this language and I have been a Christian for most of my life and I am now sixty years old. This language has a call to it! And just like any new language it is new and leaves you with a decision! I am very sad that this was never introduced to us when becoming a Christian when we were first introduced to the Scriptures! To make us realize that the Scriptures were Jewish! This is a very important starting point don't you also think so? The saying that most of us know " well begun is half done " makes what I am saying a thoughtful idea worth teaching about. Thank you for "RU-vid" to make this available.

***** He isn't "weaker" in another verse and in need -- it was his intention to die in that manner, because it fulfills the prophecy that a man perfect in the law would be slain as an offering from YHWH to man (instead of man offering a perfect sacrifice to YHWH). Christians praise YHWH through the sacrifice of Jesus, as a way that YHWH created righteousness despite the law, whereas before there was only righteousness by obedience to the law.

Native Hebrew speakers don't use the dots and dashes that distinguish some of the different sounding letters and provide the vowels, which may be why you have seen less. But if you don't already know the words, don't know how these words are pronounced, these extra things are very helpful!

Native speaker here. Those are very VERY specific forms of vowels and laws and particles, 95% of hebrew speakers or native speakers don't use these. I'll be honest I even forgot about most of the vowels because I can read without them because you just remember words and know how they sound like, but anyone who wishes to learn, once you get the hang of it it's sorta easy I'd imagine. בהצלחה
