Hedningarna - Täss'on Nainen
Täss′on nainen tuulen tuoma
tuulen tuoma ve'en vetämä
meren aaltojen ajama
meren tyrskyn työntelemä
Kuin mie käynen laulamahan
laulan mie meren mesiksi
suoloiksi meren somerot
meren hiekat hernehiksi
Yhen vyöni vyötännällä
yhen paitani panolla
solkeni solittamalla
polkimeni painamalla
Nouse luontoni lovesta
syntini syvästä maasta
syntini syvästä maasta
haavan alta haltiainen.

I think I saw the music video for “Min Skog” around that same time. Then few years later, “Hippjokk” was released and I was hooked for life. I saw them live in “Gamla” in Oslo at the end of the 90’s. That was a great experience. The funny thing is that I had a very Christian friend that saw them live way before me. I guess religious people can enjoy a “pagan” (Hedning) as well. Sadly she is not with us any more, but I think about her every time I listen to this music simply because she was the only person I knew that also loved Hedningarna.

Like their other song, "Tuuli" this is essentially an incantation. The singer is asserting & gathering power to her in the middle verses. I'm not sure quite what the meaning of the last verse is - I've heard it said that the "sin" to which they're referring is some kind of offspring, whether it's a magical offspring or a real baby, I don't know. Can anyone tell us more?
@j.lahtinen7525
@j.lahtinen7525 7 лет назад
"Synti" actually refers to exactly the same thing as "sin" in English. When Christianity originally came to Finland, it kind of got woven into the traditional folk lore. The form "syntini" just means "my sin". Where you might have gotten the idea of the "magical offspring" from is the last line. The last verse in total would translate as something like: "Rice my nature from a cleft, my sin out of the deep earth my sin out of the deep earth from under the aspen a fay-creature." "Fay creature" was closest I could think of how to translate "haltiainen". The word "lovi" was a bit difficult as well, as it may mean a few things; I translated it as "cleft" - in shamanism it may refer to some sort of a supernatural state of being. On the other hand, it can also refer to a vagina, so this whole thing has a kind of a sexual tension to it.

Oh? This explanation makes more sense in this context, I think: "koskivaarak 11 months ago It is not synti (sin) but synty (origin, oringinal power, strength, mana). Big difference!"
@j.lahtinen7525
@j.lahtinen7525 7 лет назад
Hmm... the pronunciation is does sound like "syntini" to me, but superficially looked, I can see how it might be seen as "syntynee". All the lyrics sites write it down as "syntini", but that alone doesn't seal the deal. If it is "syntynee", that means simply "is born", with the lyric then being "is born from the deep earth" The thing that makes me doubt that interpretation is that if it is "syntynee" doesn't quite fit with the line preceding it, or the song structure, when you look at it closely. The first line in the verse says: "Nouse luontoni lovesta" - "Rise my nature from the cleft"; which is formed as a command or request. So to follow that up with "is being born from the deep earth" seems a bit odd. On the other hand "Syntini syvastä maasta" works grammatically perfectly, as in the context of the previous line, it leaves out the word "nouse" because it is understood from the context; and it uses a poetic devise used frequently in ancient Finnish lore and in Kalevala rune singing: saying the same, or very similar thing twice in a row, using different words. So: "Nouse luontoni lovesta, Syntini syvästä maasta" Could be right from the Kalevala - I now realize that it also fits the "Kalevala meter", the exact poetry form (which means each line has eight syllables.) "Syntynee" would also fit this meter, but it would break with the repetition which is as essential. "Rise my nature from a cleft, My sin from the deep earth" Essentially equates her nature with her sin - her sinful nature, and fits the traditional poetic form. "Rise my nature from a cleft Is born from the deep earth" Is strangely ungrammatical, and does not follow the poetic form. Now that i really look at the lyrics, actually the whole song is in Kalevala form, and the lyrics ALL come in pairs of lines, the second line restating the first in a slightly different manner. So "syntynee" would break the poetic structure of the song, and go against the form the entire thing is written in. With this analysis, I think it's clear the correct lyric is "syntini" - "my sin". Also, regarding the comment you picked, that I'm responding to: "synti (sin) but synty (origin, oringinal power, strength, mana)" - I know of no instance where "synty" would mean "power", "strength" or "mana", or "original" - "synty" means "birth" or "origin".

Skiamakhos maybe she's asking the fay to cleanse her of her negative energy or something so she can cast her spell in better confidence? (Btw I found this song through one of your playlists, thank you)
@alarik36

Skiamakhos Then it could be a chant that is asking Ilmatar and groundcreatures(much like elves and the oldnorse female beings 'diser'), who live under the aspenroot for a easy delivery. That is my qualified guess. The talk about buckles on dress places it in iron-age.
