Get the Study Guide for my new 2023 course on Heidegger's seminal Being and Time here
www.halkyongui...
Seminars begin mid January 2023.
The course is an invitation to think after the most fundamental phenomena of being and human existence. This course is ideal for anyone who wants to understand Heidegger but also if you want to articulate an exit from modernity. Heidegger's thought of concealment, withdrawal, and another beginning is specifically intended for this.
The course is ideal for everyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of existentialism, phenomenology, the philosophy of technology, and modernity and its relationship with Antiquity.
In this video I read and interpret §105 of Heidegger's "Contributions to Philosophy". There Heidegger lays out some ground questions we have to face if we wish to overturn the meaning crisis and get beyond the madness of subjectivity at its utmost maximum.
I’m an independent scholar and your contributions make this work possible. Huge thanks to all my supporters!

A colleague once suggested that the language of Heidegger was extremely abstruse and difficult for the lay person, and in that vein, I must admit I have no notion about what's being presented here, well almost none :). However, I applaud the simple and clear language used to try to explain the ideas and concepts underlying the subject matter under consideration. Simplicity of language usually portrays a deep understanding of a subject by a teacher, while the use of jargon or overly complex language can betray a more limited command of a subject. Presumably the talk is directed mainly toward an audience with a prior understanding of the basics of philosophy as a discipline. Perhaps, for people like me, who lack that knowledge, some concrete examples, if the exist (!), of the concepts under consideration might assist. Keep up the good work.

Thank you warmly! What is presented here, in all brevity, is that Heidegger sees in these three thinkers a warning sign for us today. A coming darkness upon mankind. Why? To simplify: because we have lost our tragic sense and want to live in the fancy of total control and manageability of all that is - including ourselves.

@@JohannesNiederhauser I wasn't expecting a reply, so thank you very much. I must admit I had a sense from the piece of the disaster to come but hadn't picked up on the reasons for it. The notion of the poetic vision being the truest seems to ring true. I've noted in these days we are now living through that poetry is being performed as a salve for our collective anxiety. Perhaps poets are better tuned-in to the undercurrents, historical and contemporary. Hoelderlin's not forcing, reminds me also of trying to remember a favorite piece of music. It never comes when I try too hard, but when I let go the whole orchestra begins to play in my head.

@@dreamcatchersong Splendid comment! Yes, it all lies in letting go. Which is most difficult. Poets are ontologically attuned to that which is...

@@JohannesNiederhauser If it's of any help, here's a poignant excerpt from a 1984 book ('Hegel, Heidegger, and the Ground of History' Professor Michael Allen Gillespie) on this subject: 'The history of the West is thus the history of a growing error (Irre), of the forgetfulness of Being and the growing predominance of being. The end of modernity, which is characterized by the final triumph of being in the doctrine of the will and nihilism, is thus the end of metaphysics and of the West itself. Being which had been understood as truth (alētheia), nature, God, and subjectivity, is understood at the end of modernity as nothing, as just another value or being. In this way the original experience of Being is completely forgotten and the impulse it gave the West is thus at its end. In this end the mystery and wonder that Being evoked are completely swallowed up in the self-certainty of subjectivity in and as the will to power and unfettered totalitarian world technology. Moreover, man who had already passed from hero-artist to philosopher to saint degenerates even further as scientist, worker and brute. The modern world and modern man are in this sense are the last phase in the withdrawal of Being and are characterized by an unprecedented darkness and barbarism, a darkness so black that it even lacks the light to understand itself as darkness and indeed conceives of itself as Enlightenment, as the brightest and most glorious epoch in human history.'

The subject of this video is excellent. Thank you for that! But I could not find the song you recommend anywhere, "I can see the darkness in the sky".

Great vid as usual. I'm trying to write a screenplay, a road buddy dramedy, where the themes of the critics of idealism (Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche) are espoused. But of course the two main characters don't debate philosophy directly thus losing the audience. It all has to be presented in visuals and the natural dialogue of two young men, one an intellectual the other a high IQ chad. Can anyone suggest particular chapters in the primary sources, or chapters/books or documentaries/podcast of commentary?

In Nietzsche I would recommend his “Twilight of the Idols”. Especially the chapter “how the ideal world finally became a fable”

A very important topic, sad that more videos aren't being made concerning these thoughts from Heidegger.

this is great, i love this perspective, very wise in philosophical and human terms, that history is slowly unfolding, and usually just the first hints of novel ideas in a culture often take epochs to realize themselves. in the middle of watching dreyfus' heidegger lectures. also have learned a lot from Paul Joseph Krause's youtube videos on german idealism... fyi, ty
