Interesting video, I wish I had found it earlier. Speaking as an American stage actor: You made a comment about rolled Rs coming out of the theater scene. In a theater without amplification, rolled and flipped Rs carry better and can be understood easier at the back of the house. If you listen to jazz singers from the 1920s, when amplification was not common, or American public speakers from before world war II, you'll find a lot flipped Rs. I do not know if that's why British theater used the rolled Rs, but it would not surprise me

Being American, the English accent I was used to hearing was this "heightened RP" accent from period pieces like Chariots of Fire, Poirot, Jeeves & Wooster etc. and that was what a general "English accent" was to me. I do voice acting, and in trying to improve my "English accent", it started becoming rather confusing listening to modern accents, because they do sound quite different. It's interesting you say the modern RP accent has American influence, because the modern RP is a more noticeable accent to me than the heightened RP. Maybe that's because I'm used to it.

Bridgerton clip is not traditional RP. It's people who've been to drama school taking special care to fully pronounce modern RP. Sounding a bit fruity isn't the same as old school cut glass RP.

I've recently come across your channel as I'm interested in mastering English by using just modern RP and southeastern British accent in general, so I hope it will be useful for me, even though I'm doing this for fun as I usually don't speak English at work because there aren't many anglophones tourist here where I live, except in mid-summer. Can I ask you a question? How many languages do you speak? Probably if you're good at teaching about accents, I would say you probably are able to speak a second language. Cheers!

I wouldn't say your accent is an RP accent. It's mostly neutral, slightly Essex, but not RP in diction.

Modern RP is NOT RP; it's some ugly estuary rubbish. LEARN REAL RP EG VOLUNTARILY = ˈvɒləntrəli NECESSARILY - ˈNESəsrəli Ego = EGəʊ etc

There is this amazing British tv show Killing Eve. It's a hidden gem for people who are interested in accents and it'd be incredible if you discussed it from this point of view. The main character Villanelle speaks with a Russian accent but puts on other accents as well to come off as a different person. She is an assassin so this skill comes in handy a lot. I don't like modern rp sounds boring

No one speaks RP anymore, politicians and the BBC speak Standard Southern British English which has a flat and harsh sound. The classical RP of the past is much more pleasing to the ear and melodious

Fantastic! Much appreciated. I like hearing Heightened RP in period dramas, but would never like to speak in that accent myself. It sounds so different from Modern RP that they seem unrelated ... which is what brought me to your video ... trying to find out the origins of Modern RP.

Heightened RP sounds better than modern RP.

There was an episode of the American TV show Frasier where his English butler spoke in a very pronounced Heightened Received Pronunciation.

Hello. One question from things I've heard in old films - is there a rule in Heightened RP that makes them pronounce suit 'ssee-yoot'? It's slightly sibilant and they almost break the dipthong.

What you speak is not RP, it's Estuary English

A great example is The Worst Witch (1998 Version). Miss Hardbroom speaks Modern RP. Miss Cackle speaks Heightened RP. What about Hermione Granger? Somewhere halfway between the two?

Please pardon me if this sounds a bit off-topic here, but I thought of raising this very specific question here under your latest video. I assume that you are in a much better position to answer/clarify this as you're a native speaker from UK who's familiar with RP too, in contrast to me here in Asia who uses English mostly as my second language. Don't you any longer enunciate an elongated version/form of the vowel/sound æ (something like æ:) in (Modern) RP ?. Despite being quite certain that I used to hear people traditionally enunciate a relatively more elongated form in (practically numerous) words/cases such as bad, sad, man, can (the noun for the metallic container and the verb associated with it too, NOT the strong form of the modal verb.), etc. compared to the short form used in cases such as patch, bat, cat, can (the strong form of the modal verb), etc., I no longer see such a distinction being made/mentioned in the IPA phonemic transcriptions given in modern dictionaries such as Oxford, Cambridge, etc. as the same symbol/notation æ is being used there to represent the sounds in either case. Could you please comment on this ?. Would it be (any longer) okay to make such a distinction in case of RP when/while speaking ?. Despite the phonemic transcriptions being mentioned there suggesting otherwise, I still do notice/hear such a distinction in the sound samples included for these words/cases in the above-mentioned dictionaries too. Your input would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Molly. I loved the video. It’s very interesting. Greetings from Chile. Chile is the Latin American country with the most British ancestry. Reason why, Chile is the Latin American country with the highest per capita cosumption of tea. And also, it is the only country in Latin America where the cosumption of tea exceeds that of coffee. We Chileans love to drink tea at any time of the day. In the morning, in the afternoon at night… We usually drink approximately 4-5 cups f tea daily. And just like in the UK, here in Chile we also drink milk tea. Although, not all Chileans like. Some prefer tea without milk. It is said that it was a British sailor who gave a packet of tea to a neighbour in the city of Valparaíso. In the past, here in Chile people used to drink yerba mate. There are still some Chileans who consume it. The British instilled in our country the custom of drinking tea. Because they didn’t really like drinking yerba mate. Another reason why tea consumption became very popular here in Chile, is because in 1767 there was a tax on the consumption of yerba mate, in order to pay for the construction of the Cal y Canto bridge. Therefore, the English, who were already installed in a large part of Chile, took over the importation and distribution of tea in our country.
