This song is actually a hymn for the god Tyr, who is the God of War and Justice. This is essentially a war chant, something said by the rune master as a sort of blessing over the warriors who are about to fight. They are saying "Tawol Athodu Ek Erilaz Owlthuthewaz Niwaremariz Saawilagar Hateka Harja" which means "I, the Rune Master, servant of Odin, call upon the one of the Sun to aid our army". The second part of the chant are the runes themselves which are elements of nature. The chant is as follows: "Fehu Uruz Thurisaz Ansuz Raidho Kenaz Gebo Wunjo Hagal Naudhiz Isa Jera Eihwaz Perthro Algiz Sowelu Tiwaz Berkano Ehwaz Mannaz Laguz Ingwaz Dagaz Othala" believe it or not they are actually speaking in old norse/futhark. The specific dialect is an older version of Icelandic which in itself is the closest to old Norse. Also, most of the vocalisations are meant to sound animalistic, as norse beliefs and Seiður magic have strong connections with animals and nature.

I thought it was the elder futhark but not in the Norse but Germanic. I chant the runes often and it would be great to hear if they did the whole of the elder futhark using their nordic names. Just love this and what a great kulning.

Maria's voice is one of the few that can bring me to tears. Heilung in general really calls back to those ancestral roots of things that we evolved for thousands of years to be moved by, but her voice calls deeper to something spiritual even in the completely non-spiritual person like myself. @Nidels
@Nidels 3 года назад
New data on this musical theme: The song's title can be found in the Mesogothic Anglo-Saxon glossary as "In-Maidjan", which means "deceptively change" or "corrupt". This makes sense since the entire story within the album consists of a peaceful village that is corrupted by having to go to war. Therefore, Proto-Germanic seems to be the language. Harigasti Teiwa Harigasti Teiwa "is a clear Germanic reference to the Negau helmet. This helmet contains several Etruscan alphabet inscriptions that include the words" Harigasti teiwa which are the first words of the song. This could be translated as Harigast (the priest) although it could also mean, the priest of Teiwaz (Tyr). "Harigast" is often (not always) seen as a personal name and that it could be made up of the words "harjaz" (army, troop, warband, war) and gastiz (stranger, guest). The forms "Hari" and "gast" is particularly found in west-germanic. As such the name could mean "war guest" or "foreign army". Tawol Athodu - I accept the invitation. Ek Erilaz - I am a runemaster. The word has been interpreted to mean magician or runemaster. The word is an ablaut variant of count and it is believed that it could be linguistically related to the name of the tribe of the Heruli or Herulos. The Heruli were a Germanic tribe from Scandinavia that was invaded by the Roman Empire in the 3rd century. So it is probably simply an old military title of Germanic provenance. Owlthuthewaz - owlthu (glorious) thewaz (servant). Means servant of the glorious Niwaremariz - Priest of the god "Ullr" / famous, renowned. From the proto-Germanic term Wulþuz (glory) wolþu- is possibly a reference to a God, surely the God Ullr. Saawilagar Hateka - My name is Sawilagaz. Harja - Army - leader of the army; commander; Warrior Wuotani Ruoperath Wuotani - Oh, Wodan! Ruoperath - famous and brilliant. This could be interpreted as the following: I, Priest Harigast. Aaccept the invitation (to battle) I am the Heruli. I am a renowned priest of Ullr. They call me Warrior. Oh, Wodan the famous and brilliant! The next chant are the names of the 24 Norse runes of the Elder Futhark. This is also known as runic song. Fehu, Uruz, Thurisaz, Ansuz, Raidho, Kenaz, Gebo, Wunjo, Hagal, Naudhiz, Isa, Jera, Eihwaz, Perthro, Algiz, Sowelu, Tiwaz, Berkano, Ehwaz, Mannaz, Laguz, Ingwaz, Dagaz, Othala. In English: Wealth, Aurochs, Thorn, Divine Breath, Travel, Torch, Gift, Joy, Hail, Need, Ice, Harvest, Tree, Luck, Elk, Sun, Creator, Birch tree, Horse, Man, Water, Fertility, Day, Home. Odin, prepare for battle! A hug.

Watching you experiencing Heilung must be the higlight of this year for me; seeing you nerding out over the vocal techniques and the emotions you go through as you listen to this "one of a kind" band made me smile! Regarding the native tounges of the band-members, they all speak germanic languages (i.e languages that are modern versions of the language they sing in) so in general, it's not extremely hard for them to match vowels/consonants, even if there are clear differences between all the modern germanic languages, it's not that hard to bridge those sounds.

She doesn't make much of the "crazy" sounds she does with Heilung, but Euzen made her one of my favorite singers before Heilung. There isn't really a perfect song to start; but as they performed on Castlefest too, maybe their "intro song" 'EUZEN | The Stage LIVE @ Castlefest 2015' is a good start. @@thomascove5134 well, Elhaz can indeed be a protection rune but it has also other meanings. But your right in that every rune has a few different meanings but not always protection. For instance Fehu can mean wealth or ownership and Tiwaz could stand for courage or justice but that depends on the situation. I only recently started to study runes and i find it pretty interesting.

Yes, Heilung again. I was blown away by their first live concert. So unique, so special. Try Hamrer Hippyer. A great song to put yourself in a trance and beautiful singing. The left guy and Maria were in a band called Euzen. Have a look at Judged By.

You should do "Alfadhirhaiti" by Heilung next. You'll dig the crow calls and the drum progression if you liked this one. "Fylgija Ear" is great for more Maria vocals and "Hamrer Hippyer" is pure energy. All from the same concert. We'll make a hardcore fan of you yet. p.s. Maria's inspiration is likely the art of "Kulning", which is a Scandinavian herdcalling technique.

I'm grateful to hear your reactions to all these tribal pagan music performers like The Hu, Eivor, Heilung and Wardruna. This traditional culture music mixes well with modern song styles to create something cool and unique. I'd like to suggest these amazing tribal music performances by a Russian band called Irdorath and a Dutch band called Omnia. Your level of appreciation is a huge factor in the motivation why we artists work so hard on performing our craft or presenting to the world. Maria and her partner, Juul, as well as Kai were all kind enough to help me in 2016-18 to make a fairly accurate representation for a Viking adventure for our TD live action DnD game. They are all really cool people and amazing at far more than just their music.

While sitting around with covid, I started the RU-vid musical chair game and end up being redirected to Heilung who I was familiar with, and hence, your review. The amazing thing I noticed was that during Maria Franz' solo, her face covering is almost identical to the picture I have of a Zuni traditional dancer, and the guy with the ornamentations on his antlers, when spreading his arms above his head, is the same image used by Bill Worrell for his sculptures. So, this music, which is so visceral, while continents and cultures apart, seems related to Native American traditions. Maybe that is why it's affect is so strong and so deep. Peace

I've been doing the banshee scream to scare people on Halloween night since I was a teen. What I feel in my throat is a tight constriction that only let's a little air through, but produces a screechy, high pitched, loud sound almost like a weird version of pursing your lips to force air through to produce a whistle. Only the air is going in to my lungs instead of being forced out
