The first comparison that struck me when reading the issue was John Carter of Mars. Not only for the time period and the traveling between worlds aspects, but the John Carter book was told from the perspective of his nephew reading his journals after his death. There’s a little bit of a Narnia-as-seen-through-The-Magicians-lens vibe as well, given the setting. As for Helen, herself, let’s not forget that when we first see her, she’s still grieving the loss of her father. It makes sense she’s constantly drinking herself into a stupor.

It should also be noted that Robert E. Howard was a bit of a wild character, and committed suicide when he was 30. So there’s the comparison for Helen’s father.
