In 1976 when I turned 16 first heard this song. Made me realize I could do what I wanted. I became the 3rd female police officer in the police department I went to work for. Before I had to retire Iwas a training officer for many men. I also taught them proper clean report writings. And more.
Rest in peace, Helen Reddy! You gave us an anthem for the ages! Sisters, let us rise against those who seek to silence us, let us stand together in love and harmony, let us remember the words of this brave woman. We will remember you, Helen!
This song reminds me of my mother. My father abandoned us and she had to play the role of two parents. She turned out to be strong and didn't take any crap from me or any of my siblings. She was tough as nails because she had to be. She even fought a domestic violent man who thought he could hit my mother like he did his wife. My mother nearly killed him with those physical blows, and he stayed away for good. Providing, loving, discipling and protecting was what she did, and a great job indeed. She's gone now, and I miss her so much.
What an amazing lady. A lioness protecting her cubs. She's in your heart so still alive. When its time your soul will find hers and you'll be together again. ❤🙌
My Great Grandma always use to say to me “I am woman, hear me roar” and today this song randomly came up. It’s so heart warming to know she is watching over me. 🥰
This is truly a beautifully written song..for us ladies..hats off to us who despite all difficulties, we refuse to give up..i am strong..i am invincible..i am woman ❤️ i am woman..watch me grow ❤️ dedicating this song to every woman watching this in today era..❤
Women are amazing. Without them men are nothing. They rule this earth. Thank God for them. Unfortunately the ones I've met have been absolutely mental, but I might have found a nice one, who I'll respect and support for ever.
Shes not dead she's in our hearts and minds, when aliens come down, they'll hear this song and shit themselves. Women are the most powerful thing in the universe. Men can't survive without them can they!!!!,?????
My Hero! All of us women became truly Empowered by our song: I AM WOMAN! Thank you Ms Helen for being such a HUGE influence in my life! Sing to everyone in Heaven!!
Thank you Helen Reddy for awakening Sooo many of us to the fact that we are equal...not better than...but equal in humanity- in every way to a man and quite capable to being able to stand on our own feet without having to accept literally and figuratively being 'beaten to the ground'. Thank you for allowing God to use you in this manner...
She was a great role model for me and many women. She definitely will be missed. I can't believe, when I heard she passed today. She stood for so much back 1971. She gave so many of us hope...She definitely will be missed. May she Rest in Peace.
I sang this song at my club's New Year's Eve party. I brought the house down - not because of the way I sang it - but because I Am Woman is such an amazing song! Thank you Helen Reddy!!
This was my grandmother's favorite song when she was alive. She is the strongest woman I know. Listening to this song brings me to tears because I know it was her favorite
Great song. Great singer. And its message is still applicable for over half of women in world who are held in near slavery/bondage as in most Muslim and African countries.
Had a dear friend send this to me because I am going through alot . And he said you are strong and will come out on top !! Thanks Rex for friendship and encouragement through this !!
I was about 10 when I heard this song. Thanks to my mother, I didn't know there were occupations that weren't open to me. I believed I could be anything I wanted to become. I was the first woman in the South Jersey IBEW. Now, I am the National Business Office Manager of a very large corporation. I oversee 92 business offices and Business Office Managers. Thank you to the women who opened the door for me. I am truly grateful.
@LORILEE....A BIG CONGRATS TO YOU MY DARLING.....I TOO HAVE MANY CAREERS....MY DAUGHTER ALSO IS A GENIUS.....I GIVE THANKS TO MY AMAZING STRONG MOTHER WHO TAUGHT ME SO BRILLIANTLY.....SHE WAS A FEMINIST TOO....🙏😇🤗💖
As a guy,I had thought I hate this song because it's man bashing but looking at the lyrics,I am wrong. It's about being a woman who can stand up for herself and she can do anything she wants. Rest in peace,Helen. You are a great singer.
@@markrodriguez9442 not really, Marcy's not a great example of a feminist. It's more the idea that the patriarchy as a system is bad for women (and also men who don't conform to society's stereotypes) and men often behave in ways that hurt women (but that doesn't mean that some men aren't lovely people).
One of the most inspirational songs ever written. Every father should have his teenage daughter download this song into one of their devices and keep it as a reminder of who they can become, with hard work.
I just LOVE this song. It was my Mothers favorite song, and by the time you get done reading this, I believe you'll understand why. My Mother was a homemaker in the 60's and early 70's, and was married to a violent drunk. she divorced him in 1973, when divorce was still relatively rare and looked down upon from a social standpoint. Possessing little more than a high school diploma, no work skills to speak of, and with no financial or any other kind of help from my father, she enrolled in college, worked 2 part time jobs while raising a 7 and 4 year old, and started a chapter of Women for Higher Education to help lift up other Women (NOT denigrate men) She went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude as the Valedictorian of her class with a BA in Political Science. She went on to work for 2 different legal aid organisations as a Paralegal, and helped not only victims of domestic violence, but those who could ill afford justice (men and women alike). She also became politically active, working to promote Women's issues in the TRUE SPIRIT of Feminism, and make no mistake, she was a RADICAL feminist, but NEVER sought to emasculate men, to her, it was truly about empowering Women, and being offended about true injustice towards Women vs the feminazi's of this day and age, whom are offended by anything not exclusively female, and I call them that because calling them femnists would be a severe injustice and insult to true Feminists such as my Mother and those like her, who struck out in the face of the unknown and dared to try to change an entrenched system from within, in a positive manner, vs tearing it all down and reforming it in their warped image. I would point out that due to the efforts of true feminists, with the incoming freshman class of congress, there will be more women serving the country in congress than ever, THAT'S TRUE PROGRESS!!!
Sounds like your mother was a great lady. There is nothing harder than striking out on your own, with children, no less and making good. You should be very proud of her.
Thank you for teaching us to be strong, confident & brave. God bless your beautiful soul Helen. You made an enormous impact on generations of females around the world. We remember you & celebrate your talent & cause.
The "anthem" of the Women's Liberation Movement, released in May, 1972, when I was 10. God bless all of my AMAZING "sisters" out there who are strong and invincible EVERY SINGLE DAY!
Time to re evaluate feminism, metoo, etc , as it's a hypocritical joke, and that's coming from a progressive, but a rational progressive who's fed up with hypocrisy
The “anthem” that makes me want to pull out my eardrums and bash my head on a footpath, all humans are just as meaningless as the other, no matter the “differences”
On Sunday, my niece got out of bed and ran over 26 miles in the London marathon (raising nearly £2,000 for charity on the way....) never having run a step until 7 months ago... she is fabulous...and invincible.
Melon Boi You are likely sitting on your Ass letting your Granny serve you. Some other great people like to help others!! Try it sometime, you might feel better about yourself!!
The song takes me back to when I was a little girl in the 70s, back then the song didn't mean much to me.; but as an adult at 61 this song totally keeps me going and realized what's this song meant, Helen Reddy what's a woman all right she still is ♥️
How is it even possible that I'm 50 years old and a huge music lover but I have never heard this song before! This is my new song that I'll be singing to anyone who gets in my way lol
I discovered her, while watching pete's dragon.. she sang songs in that animation moviefrom disney. My friend Patty's and my song, friends 45 years, passed away a few weeks ago. Patty know you are keeping them busy in heaven. RIP lady. Wish I could have said good by.
Being born in 61 this song was basically the theme song for my life. I do believe come the day I die this will be played at my funeral!! You were God to me Helen!!!
I am a woman in my spirit and everything I do (I’m transgender MTF), and have always felt a wonderful feeling and connection to this song. Still love hearing it now and remember when it first came out. RIP Helen Reddy, you are missed, but I’m sure the people around you, are enjoying your music
Welcome to the struggle! I'm surprised that they didn't give you a pay cut after you transitioned. LOL Why do they want women to be 2nd class citizens so badly?
@Randi-x8g She's still subject to the same discriminations that bio women face. She can be raped. Groped in public. Left out of the boys' clubs at work. Sexually harassed everywhere she goes. Passed over for promotions. Man-splained to. Physically abused. Can't sleep safely with her windows open. Shall I go on? Helen was singing about equal rights for all women. Please don't ask her to take a back seat behind us just because. She can stand right in front with us because she and her group suffered just as much, if not more than us. They face violence constantly. Misogyny hurts her just as bad as it hurts us, if not more. Like I said: welcome to the struggle. We're glad to have you on our side!
Iam so saddened to hear you passing, RIP , to her children you have my deepest, sincerest symphathy, I grew up listening to her songs, I will miss her tremendously...
Today I sat at home and a movie 'I am woman' aired on a local TV channel, I ignore most but this one caught my attention, there I followed and it landed my here. My goodness, I am swept off my feet🙌🏽🔥🔥 that movie is a must watch
Here's to all the ladies -- may we never allow to be ashamed or belittled because of our gender and may we treat ourselves and each other with utmost respect that we deserve!
Helen Reddy, the Australian singer whose hits included the 1972 chart-topping feminist anthem “I Am Woman”, passed away on September 29th, 2020 in Los Angeles, CA. She was 78 years old... Between 1971 and 1981 the Melbourne, Australian native had twenty-one records make the Top 100 chart, six made the Top 10 with half of them reaching #1, "I Am Woman" for 1 week in 1972, "Delta Dawn" for 1 week in 1973, and "Angie Baby" for 1 week in 1974... Besides her three #1 records, her three other Top 10 records were "Leave My Alone (Ruby Red Dress)" {#3 in 1973}, "You and Me Against the World" {#9 in 1974}, and "Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady" {#8 in 1975}... May she R.I.P.
I dont mean to sound narcissistic but your Mom sounds a lot like me. I too fled an abusive relationship. I only raised 3 kids on my own but most days it felt like 5. I also went to University so I could give my kids the life they deserved. I am now readying myself to leave this world courtesy of cancer. My most sincere hope is that one or all of my kids writes a post about me like your post about your amazing mother. She doesn't sound like one to rest (again like me) so I will say this: may your mother be rejoicing in peace & power. God bless you. Your post made my day & set a beautiful tone for my week. ❤
I was about12 years old when this song first came out and even at that young age, I knew that as a female, things were not equal. I understood this song and felt its meaning. As I got older, things were getting better but I then TRULY understood this song because I was experiencing discrimination big time. This song should be considered a woman's anthem--even today. So many women that I know who are 20 years or so younger than me, don't know the song and that really is a shame. This is an important song. It's easy to take for granted how far we've come when you really didn't have to go through the thick of it. Please, remind your daughters the sacrifices and struggles of the many strong and brave women that came before them. Women of all races and if you were a woman of color, you had an additional struggle to overcome. Even though things are getting much better, the fight isn't over on either front. Women are still paid much less than a man for the sam job and education; women are till overlooked r high level jobs even when equally qualified as their male counterparts and it goes on We must never forget our history, for forgetting it and the struggle will almost guarantee that it will be repeated.
And now it's gone in the other direction where men are being discriminated against women. Sorry but now the woe is me women, is pure hypocritical bullshit
