I personally think the second movement of Ravel's concerto in G major is one of the most beautiful things musical arts have ever produced. The transition around 6:00 is a true human achievement.
This movement inspired one of Jacques Brel's most lyrical songs, "Les déserpérés", whose score was written by Gérard Jounannest, Brel's acompanist at the time. Check it out.
Just as the other comment said, this piece gives many orgasms to listeners. You expect this? I 'd like to play Bach's at my funeral. Of course playing for your parents is something comforting even thousand times. Hope you get better and better.
The first time I heard it on the radio, I was walking and I stopped and stood still for the whole thing with tears rolling down my eyes. It's impossible to listen to it and believe that any other piece of music exists.
this piece has followed me from my youth into middle age. it's a little glimpse of heaven. every time. i can't imagine my life without it. thank you, sir.
Confession: I normally have no patience for slow second movements, but the adagio of Ravel's Piano Concerto is the only piece of music than has come close to making me cry.
I seriously cannot find any piece more beautiful than this... i've looked for years and this is seriously the most beautiful thing ever created... Someday i wish to play this with an orchestra
Ravel was a great creator of atmospheres, and Helene Grimaud is a pure angel flying over poetry just now... and Jurowsky is a new and serious required conductor. Bravo.
Beautiful performance by Helene Grimaud of course; no real surprise there given her clear affinity with this work and the deep sensitivity of her playing in general. An honorable mention must be given to the woodwind soloists as well, though, and especially the oboist who gave an absolutely exquisite performance here. Wonderful.
It's not an oboe, it's an English horn 😃 same family, but the English horn (cor anglais) is slightly different and used by composers for its dreamy sound
@@ariellealvarez-pereyre4723 Indeed, you're absolutely right in that it's a cor anglais, but cor anglais players are normally referred to as oboists in recognition of the fact that they invariably play both, and oboe more frequently, hence the label used. :)
@@simondurrant1 I just think it's a shame of depriving the player of their rightful title when they're playing cor anglais, especially when it is a solo, since so few people actually know the instrument. Also, some cor anglais players make a career out of it and that is their title in the orchestra. Maybe she's not an oboist... :)
Yes, often we violists too are identified as violinists, much to our chagrin, but viola is indeed essentially an alto violin and cor anglais / English horn an alto oboe 😀
The lady oboist was simply incredible. The dialogue she had going with Grimaud towards the end of the movement was simply breathtaking - so moving as to be tear-jerking.
Underrated?? This is probably the greatest orchestrator and is so recognised and famous. Everybody admired Ravel. He is amongst the 5 more famous and talented composer. Ravel has never been underrated
@@stephanerigault5106 He is renouned and beloved, but he still hasn't achieved the ridiculous heights of fame of the likes of Mozart or Bach; but I think it can be argued that he would deserve to be reckoned up against those greats. Despite his very high rating, I think it can still be argued that he is nonetheless underrated.
You really have to be in a certain place to be able to evoke such deep emotions. Helene shows the depth of her soul to be able to play with such beauty.
One of the best music of all times that I adore, adore and adore…. It tastes the heaven. Music is my life and this one my favourite of all…. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
After the hauntingly beautiful opening piano solo, the first-time listener might wonder how Ravel could possibly improve on such perfection. Then they hear the recapitulation, with the melody spun out elegiacally on the cor anglais with the delicate filigree embellishments on the keyboard, culminating in the long final trill on the piano over gently sighing phrases on the strings and they go "Oh..."
The duet w/ the cor anglais and the piano that begins at 6:11 is my favorite part, but just about everything Ravel composed is great. my comment posted 07/14/2018
I've just been transported somewhere else for 10 minutes. It's not often one comes across a piece of music so profound that it can do that. And the emotion Helene Grimaud plays with. Just wow!
I saw Helene perform this piece in Los Angeles with the LA Philharmonic conducted by Gustavo dudamel in 2014. I have seen perhaps 100 LA Phil concerts in this venue, and this performance was the most moving to me -- I will never forget it. I simply love this piece and Helene's execution of it. Since then, I have watched this video about 20 times.
If you go through any recording of this piece going back decades you will see truly the pianist is absolutely one with the music, you can almost see their memories and music in one fine thread
It's the clarinet's entrance that does it for me and the way she looks up with such longing in her eyes. Utterly sublime. I think I may have listened to this piece over a hundred times and have yet to grow tired of it
I don't know what he intended but I get the sense that Ravel is expressing the essence of Aging, Compassionate Care and Death in this movement. The disjointed piano plods along like the elderly. The first time there is treble fibrillation, the accompaniment comes in like compassionate caregivers. Then there are happy flights of fantasy (Alzheimer's?) in the right hand of the pianist, like butterflies. Until it ends with the final fibrillation and peace.
For me, this music is a journey to a magical realm or state of mind. The solo piano part is when you try to enter the realm, as if you are saying a password. Then, when the rest of the orchestra starts playing, you enter this magical world that you didn't know before. The world itself is made out of light and happiness but also out of sadness, sorrow and desperation. There are no humans in this world, it's only nature. It merely depicts the profound beauty of this nature on its own. Life comes and goes, it literally goes by; everything "just happens".
Fills my heart . Que maravilla! Absolument sublime ! Amazing!!! Wonderfull!
One of the most jazziest piece composed by Ravel in my opinion. Beautiful use of dissonance, tension, and key changes inspires myself to compose music.
Happy birthday, Master Ravel ! prio038, I can't find the words to thank you enough or to describe my emotions every time I listen to this Adagio. 3:05 and 4:02 sheer ecstasy
8:36 reminds me of Ravel's Mother Goose pri038, I wish I could find the words to thank you enough for posting of the most touching scores of all time, Helene Grimaud plays this second movement of Ravel's G Major Piano Concerto exquisitely !
There are no words for this piece of music. It takes me on a magic carpet ride every time I listen to it. It reminds me of my father God I wish I could talk to him right now.
The Adagio assai of Ravel's Concerto in G is the sort of music I just couldn't live without. Thanks for this heartfelt performance, Pri038 P.S.: every time I listen to it I find it so hard to fight back my tears...
Merci ! Mille ******************** Renaud
Such intense and sublime moments, Helene Grimaud is such an amazing performer and look at the beauty of their looks to each other, sentimental. I couldn't even imagine how one and only Ravel felt when writing this magnificent composition. When Classical Music and Jazz are together as in this incredible composition, the intensity of music captures all the emotions of humans can feel at one time. Music is our universal language and as great Oliver Sacks emphasized "One does not need to have any formal knowledge of music - nor, indeed, to be particularly "musical" - to enjoy music and to respond to it at the deepest levels. Music is part of being human, and there is no human culture in which it is not highly developed and esteemed." and "Music is part of being human". Let music conquer our lives friends. The life is more meaningful when you dedicate yourself to an art form. Peace.
this has been one of my favourite pieces from Ravel for years. And, hearing it again after quite a while, I friggin' started blubbering like a schoolgirl.......damn you Ravel!!!
