How to create retrofit brick beam lintels in existing walls using Twistfix helical bars.
CUT slots in two mortar joints over unsupported brick or masonry, plus an extra 500mm on both sides. The depth of the slots should be 40-55mm or about one-third the thickness of the wall.
FLUSH the slots with water to thoroughly lean and soak the joints.
FILL the voids to about 50% deep with WHO-60 masonry repair grout.
INSERT the first helical bar, and push the rod to approximately one-half the depth of the grout.
ADD a second bead of the thixotropic WHO-60 mortar into each slot.
INSTALL a second Twistfix bar into the wall at least 10mm in front of the first.
TROWEL the displaced grout to fully embrace the spiral reinforcement bars.
PATCH the wall, deeply filling all cracks, and repointing the joints, to disguise the hidden-strength brickwork repair.
That's it; a simple 8-step process to form retrofit brick beam lintels in which the two reinforced joints represent the top and bottom flanges of a retrofit masonry beam, and the brickwork between them forms the web.
The beam spans unsupported masonry, transferring vertical loads to supported areas. www.twistfix.c...
