There's a DC3 on floats at 12:04, a very unusual aircraft . The Germans used helicopters very successfully in the Norwegian campaign . But for some reason they used them very little after that.

The helicopters in Norway were mostly for scouting and transportation, they were found to be extremely vulnerable to enemy fire in which Norwegian army would fire on them with machine guns. The helicopter was also used in the Austrian alps.

From 11:38 , the hand controls of this XR-4 were different from current setting. They set collective on right hand and cyclic on the left, much like you set for car driving in the west. I wonder when did they swap in to current setting where controls are much like driving control for right-handed steering ? BTW, I drive on the right hand nad I think it's more natural.

I noticed that also, from Australia. Building my first helicopter, I like that the ergonomics of a car is very similar to a helicopter. Traditionally they are operated from the right seat also, and if clockwise rotating rotor, you use the right pedal on take off. Must be confusing for yanks where everything is opposite.

This film must be later than 1940 going by some of the other aircraft in it.

At 2:10 that machine resembles exactly as a modern drone, whose control is only possible today by electronic management, inexhisted actually...

No German use except in Norway probably because Hitler nixed some of the best German weapons and machines (while expediting WWI things like huge railway guns and static defensive lines.). Actually, the American development was rather slow at first. Finally,. “There will be a time before the two-helicopter family makes its appearance.” Ha ha.
